When I went to school in RI, The Providence Journal was considered essential reading especially for its robust coverage of local politics and the inevitable corruption that followed in a one party "machine" state (RIP Providence mayor turned lovable inmate Buddy Cianci.) Now, I hardly recognize the flimsy remnants of a once great paper as The Journal has been garrotted by the bean counters at media death star Gannett. Absolutely terrible now that the USA today has acquired them. I spent $2k to put my father's obituary in their paper and they didnt even deliver it to my town the day of publishing. I spent hours on the phone with them and they would not sell and mail me copies and when I had Cumberland farms call to inquire why they hadn't received the days paper they just put up a brick wall and blamed it on third party delivery services. read more

Been on the delivery list for 32 years. This last two years the delivery service has been pathetic due to the trash bag they hire to deliver. I've complained about the papers not making into my box that I was told by projo if I added one they would make the driver do it, hasnt happened. The driver speeds down my street, the strong smell of marijuana permeates his vehicle. He's gotten into arguments with my son in law who asked him to slow down. After chatting with someone to cancel my subscription, I received an email confirmation of that cancellation on February 28th. I just received a phone call three months later that I owe money for my subscription. I explained that I cancelled but they said there was no record of my attempt to cancel. That is problematic. If they don't even have a record of cancellations, or a record of emails they send confirming cancellations, I'm not sure how they could even be trusted to record when someone makes a payment. I just cancelled again. And I have a record of that cancellation as well. Hopefully they don't call me in three months to tell me I owe even more money. read more

I have the same problem as many others with cancellation. I unsubscribed online months ago - permitted if you live in VT. Got an email that it was cancelled. Recently got several calls, per day, saying I owed money because my subscription wasn't paid! And the call center person told me that they, the call center, weren't able to cancel! Never been so happy that my card had been hacked, and the new number didn't work. At one point the csr said I owed $1.74 for days not cancelled. read more

I have a monthly subscription and I'm lucky if I get 5 papers a month. Call at 8:30am to late to deliver. Website says must call before 10. Don't Water your time withe delivery. Also it will take a miracle to get your refund. Run far away from the ProJo delivery. read more

The Providence Journal was a great paper at one time. It was loaded with coupons, sale flyers, current news and events. Now it has shrunk to next to nothing. The cost of ads and obits. have gotten out of control. which most likely has contributed to the shrinking newspaper. I have been getting home delivery for around 50 Yeats. I would give less than one star if it were possible. We have been home delivery subscribers for many years. The company that owns the Providence Journal has to be the most dysfunctional organization on earth. I sent a check in July 2022 for $581 to cover 7 days delivery for 12 months. I received a call from the collections department saying that my account was past due. I called my bank and got a copy of the cancelled check that was processed in July. The collections department (not based in the USA) could not receive an email. The customer service department could not receive an email of the check that was processed. They said I must send the check to gsspaymenttrack@gannett.com. I have sent the copy of the check at least 5 times and pleaded for them to call me. During the period of time (July 2022-Jan 2023) I received at least 2-3 calls per week from the collections department. Dealing with this company means not having your calls returned, no communications between departments, inability to receive emails, basically the most inept customer service possible. read more

Buyer beware! They lure you in with special savings for purchasing an extended subscription but read the fine print because it's a scam. I bought my 88 year old father a subscription - 13 weeks for about $130. Five weeks later he gets a renewal invoice which he is ready to pay. When I call, I'm told it's because they deduct one week for every "special insert" which are delivered monthly - charged at $9 per insert. This is explained in the fine print. Problem is he only received 2 special inserts but they were deducting 7 weeks! Oh and the inserts? One was a "puzzle book" which for the cost of a week of newspapers I could've bought a dozen or more at the Dollar Store. I was told multiple times a supervisor would call me. They never did. After 5 calls, I cancelled. I was told the next day would be my last delivery so I argued that would be 7 weeks and I paid for 13! Even with their ridiculous special inserts the subscription should go for another month. The CSR agreed to have the paper delivered for another month. It's sad because I would have gladly purchased the subscription for my father for as long as he wanted; but they take advantage of unsuspecting readers so goodbye ProJo. read more

I must say, reading the wonderful reviews that are posted here, makes me feel better knowing that it isn't just me!!! I have a few favorite sections of the paper I enjoy reading. I originally started buying it because I got tired of friends saying things like; "didn't you know so-and-so died"? I would read Mark's articles as well, and the Letters To The Editor prove entertaining from time to time. Lately though, I've been experiencing issues of incompetence at such extreme levels, I'm ready to throw in the towel! It all started in July after I made my usual four week payment. Five days later I received another renewal notice. I called and spoke to moron number one. She said perhaps the payment/statement crossed in the mail and to ignore the notice. She also stated my account was up to date. Great right? It seemed so at the time anyway. Last week, I receive a call from moron number two. She offered me a deal that included two free weeks if I made a payment over the phone. I went for that, who doesn't like free? I even got a confirmation number. I asked about the statement that I hadn't received yet and was told they just recently mailed it and should see it soon. I can tell what you're thinking. I called the next day and they assured me the phone solicitation was legit. Keep in mind now, I'm still thinking my account is up to date. Five days later, I stroll to the paper box and find no paper. I got on-line with my Bank and discover the payment has not yet cleared my account. I called Projo customer service and spoke with moron number three who said my subscription was cancelled because I was delinquent. I explained how I had made a payment by phone, was told my account was up to date...blablabla. He transferred me to moron number four who is supposed to be a supervisor. She confirmed what moron three told me about being delinquent. After explaining the ENTIRE situation to her, including telling her that I have confirmation numbers and was also told by moron number one my account was up to date, she said; "I can't be responsible for what my reps tell you"...WHAT?????? Needless to say, well, let's just say I ended the call. Please don't give up on me yet. You know the saying...you just can't make this shit up. So because I am such a glutton for punishment, I call back. To my surprise, I am speaking with moron number one!! She naturally didn't recall our original conversation, and after some adjustments, coupled with a better understanding, I bought my account up to date, my subscription was to begin again?...FUCK NO!!!!! This morning, I get a call saying my subscription is up for renewal!!!!!!!!!!LMFAO!!!!!! I just can't believe it! The increase in the cost of the Projo over the years versus other publications? Then to save a bit more $$, you had to create an account and pay by statement rather than news stand prices? And now, they charge you five dollars above your subscription price to receive a paper statement versus an e-bill? What the fuck is next? I'll tell you.....OUT OF BUSSINESS, that's what!!! Horrible experience with a subscription promotion. A month of no delivery, and it took 6 days to get a response online for help. Several weekend calls to circulation/customer service - always with promises made that the papers would be delivered. They failed every weekend. They took my $$$ immediately, and when I cancelled they said it would take 7-21 days for a refund. No ability to escalate on the phone. Complete incompetence in every interaction I had with them. read more

You get Patinkin writing "my teens think i'm not hip"..you understand Reynolds pretty much hates pro sports and now people only read his "for what it's worth" on Saturdays and the worth isn't that much...and outside of a Froma Harrop zinger now and then the back pages of the Journal are merely fodder for the goose stepping right. I have called, I have emailed, I have sent a facebook message. I cannot seem to stop the twice a week advertisement crap that is thrown in my yard. If there was a time when I would be even remotely consider newspaper delivery I wouldn't do it simply because I can't even get the free garbage they throw down every street to stop. This kind of advertising should be illegal and considered willful and flagrant littering. The Providence Journal should be fined for every single plastic bag filled with garbage that is disposed of in front of a citizens home. I renewed my subscription the first week of January. At the same time the paper was told not to deliver the Sat and Sun paper over the holiday weekend. We had snow that weekend and a relative came to plow the driveway. Needless to say both papers ended up in the snowblower, causing $200.00 worth of damage. After numerous attempts, I finally received a call back last week. It was from the distribution company saying they would be sure to collect the money from the carrier, since he should have received the message and was to blame. I will not be sending a copy of the bill to anyone. I cannot believe a person who has to be at 2 jobs to take care of his family should have to pay for a mistake that is not his. i am a 50 year subscriber of the providence journal that is ready to cancel. projo is a joke. $80/month....no local news. daily paper can be read in 5 minutes. first section usually a whopping 12 pages...6 of which are full page car ads. front page stories all deal with covid or mocking president trump. why do people subscribe to a paper which is so filled with hate, lies, and distortion. is this the best ri can do? $3 for a daily paper and $5 for a joke of a sunday paper that has no real news but plenty of circulars. there is absolutely no pride in the reporting of reality in this sad excuse of a newspaper which frequently is a rehash of false narratives from usa today. local news, community human interest articles are non existent, except for your peddling of social issues that you want to slam down our throats or guilt trips that you want us to feel awful about. go peddle your hate and lies somewhere else. as for me i'll find the truth somewhere else and save almost $1000 a year without being criticized, lectured or made to feel guilty about my existence! in spite of the providence journal's attempt to destroy this country and brainwash our citizens it is the greatest country in the world. read more

Unless you are desperate to hold a newspaper and read it, stay away from this company. Once they get your $$$, you will find yourself unable to access your account. Once you email them requesting access to your account, because they are billing you illegally, you will get a response asking "what specifically do you have an issue with, your on-line access or paper delivery." Having what to do with seeing when, where and why they are sucking money out of your credit card. I will be filing complain with BBB next. At all they are mindless people in digital customer service. They say they cancel it. When you see next month it isnt cancelled? They LIE! They say there was another email associated with your account that they cancelled. Well if thats true then why wasnt I double billed? Their website is designed deceptively to sign you up for subscription you as a student dont want or need. But they do it anyway and try to login and cancel this? Not easy at all Not user friendly and when you suggest they fix website so this doesnt happen again, stupidly, they say we dont have ability to change website here. I don't usually do things like this but I'm so upset right now I had to use this as a forum to discuss the OUTRAGEOUS pricing I just got from the Providence Journal to submit an obituary for a loved family member. Like it's not bad enough we're all dealing with this unbelievable loss!! They quoted me $1,230.43 to run his obituary for ONE DAY!!! So I called the Warwick Beacon. Granted a smaller exposure but local and we can still post it on FB. The women Sue at the Beacon was FABULOUS and the exact same obituary was only $50.00 and it will be posted tomorrow! I will never forget the insensitivity with pricing. It's my firm belief that you pay for birth announcements, engagement and wedding announcements but obituaries should be a complimentary service the Providence Journal offers its local area.
