Karaoke at Pumpjack ended my birthday night. I've always loved gay bars for their welcoming and fun atmosphere while being a space where I can let my hair down, without having to fight off potential suitors. I noticed that this bar had various themed nights and made a note to visit on Wednesday for karaoke. The lwereast time that I've been out for karaoke was two years ago, so this was a welcomed reprieve. The bar wasn't packed, but there were enough people for it to feel full. There was the main lounge area - at the entrance - then the karaoke area - then an area with a pool table. I quickly found seating at the bar and enjoyed a night of karaoke and fabulous men and women who were all so very friendly and fun. There are a couple of other themed nights that I wanted to attend (leather and teddy bear nights), but all in all - I had a great time. I'm hoping to visit in the future again. read more

Me and my mtf trans partner went here on the Monday after the Taylor swift concert to hang out and do a bit of vacation day drinking. Luke, bartender at the time was awesome and super friendly, 10/10 for sure. However, when the next bartender came on duty he was so cold, off putting, rude & blatantly ignoring us. He literally would not look at me, & he was standing' directly across the bar from where we were sitting. It was obvious that we were definitely no longer welcome there. We have NEVER felt so unwelcome or uncomfortable in a bar before. I do not think women are welcome here after a certain time. If so, just mention it and we would have left. You do not make someone feel uncomfortable & unwelcome, that's not kind the was of treating people. Especially in the LGBTQ+ community! We dropped a lot of USD & too bad because we will be back to Vancouver soon, and will be going one of the many other bars on Davie St. read more

I got nauseous and had to step out they made sure I was feeling okay, a friend tried to go back in to get water he didn't let me back in (understandably) but brought me water instead. I am appalled by the way me and my friends were treated last night. As a gay bar that has existed on Davie street for more than 20 years I would have expected an experienced staff and people who weren't stuck in the past with misogynistic and transphobic idealogy. This was my first time going to this establishment, I can't say I will ever return. Their staff don't have your safety as any intrest and are extremely lucky that no one got hurt last night. My friends drink got spiked by a man there, their drink tasted bitter and luckily they didn't have more than a few sips before realizing something was wrong. Upon alerting staff that our friend was drugged. Blatantly telling the manager on staff that he was drugged he refused to believe that and instead believed that he was intoxicated when he had had 4 drinks in total all from the bar in a span of over 6 hours. Something which they should know from having a liquor license isn't enough for someone to be intoxicated. They then proceeded to kick us out risking us sue-ing them and losing their liqour license under the duty of care act which was established in 1973, something everyone who takes their serving it right (which is required by law to serve alcohol in BC) should be very familiar with. They are lucky our friend wasnt hurt and we won't be pressing charges. The bartenders seemed drunk or under the influence of something. IF YOU ARE A WOMAN OR HAVEN'T HAD YOUR GENDER MARKER CHANGED ON YOUR ID DO NOT COME HERE. We were also told by multiple patrons that "women aren't allowed here." we were all trans men. Pump jack isn't living in 2025 with the way they run their establishment and the way they allow their patrons to treat people. If for whatever reason you decide to go here don't leave your drink unattended for a second, or you can be in danger of getting raped especially if you aren't in a group. read more

This is the pride weekend and I'm visiting from Las Vegas. All I can say is this bar blows. First off, the place is absolutely filthy. Wet floor, sticky bar counter, trash all over the dance floor and hundreds of sad empty bottles and glasses pulled up on tables. I understand that pride weekend can get crazy but this is at midnight after the parade while the bar is half empty and the staff are either standing idle or just chit chatting with random friends. Nobody's cleaning this place. Amazing! Second, we waited in line for 40 minutes before walking into a half empty bar. It doesn't make sense, does it? The line is still out there with poor people in it. Third, the staff are not happy, friendly nor attentive. Finally the music is tragic. Horrible DJ with absolute ghetto taste in music. We all know men are pigs, but somebody needs to remind the owner and the managers they're not running a pig farm. read more

My friends and I came here randomly during Saturday night to check out the gay scene in Toronoto. I'm glad that we came here. This club seemed a lot more upbeat and less crowded than the other ones that we've passed. Upon entering, there was a $5 cover that was cash only. The club was actually big and it did not feel disgusting. The patrons dressed very casual and the bartenders were friendly. The drinks are extremely affordable (about $7 - $9 Canadaian per cocktail) and they accept credit cards. Unfortunately, bartenders are using shot glasses to measure the amount of alcohol in your drinks... so you won't be able to get strong drinks. :( The music wasn't all too familiar, but my friends and I had a great time dancing. Pumpjack is large enough that it can accommodate a large group of friends. There's a large bar area, a large dance floor, and places to sit everywhere! The bathrooms were relatively clean, and the entertainment was enjoyable. Everyone -- including myself, had a great time. I wish there was a Pumpjack in LA. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THERE WAS FREE WIFI!! If you're a tourist and you do not roaming capabilities, you'd understand my excitement. read more

Its the poorest excuse I've ever seen for a gay bar in Canada. Even when you get inside, its half empty. The bartenders are rude and not appreciative of their tips. When I was working for BC Lotteries, I had to opportunity to explore various licensed establishments - The Pumpjack Pub being one of them. Located on the prime real estate on Davie Street, this pub attracts the gay crowd from surrounding neighborhoods. I found this place to be a little dirty and run down - but the crowd was really friendly! It feels a little cold due to the decor, but I'm sure it's a happening place in the summer! read more

This pub has its fair share of smokers, and the numbers grow on the sidewalk outside the entrance as the night progresses. Inside the pub, large black cock rings hang from the ceiling which no doubt compliment the silver sculpture of male anatomy hanging on the wall. The back of the pub has an odd smell to it and your shoes crunch peanut shells as you make your way closer to the entrance where it doesn't smell. The crowd is laid-back, but nary a gin & juice in the house. It was nice to see women occupy the same space as gay men, it's a bore to drink in bars where you are surrounded with only men or a specific queer stereotype. The drinks aren't too terribly expensive but it's a good idea to look your best when you're here. We were checked out and cruised by quite a few gents in the pub, which makes you wonder how many drinks does it take before someone wants to take you into the cage in the back of the house. read more

I don't know much about the gay scene in Vancouver, but Pumpjack seems pretty hardcore. Leather, chaps and asses galore! Yeehaw! It kind of reminds me of a dungeon, where are the knights? If you don't know where you are going or what you are looking for, you will totally miss it. The bartender was cute...or maybe I was just wearing martini goggles. So close to five stars, just missing a few elements (food service, some spirit selection) but I think the staff here are very friendly and attentive. I've always had excellent service. Drinks are reasonably priced. As a previous comment mentions, they are all shot measured, but that is a Canadian law, NOT a Pumpjack rule, so in that respect cocktails are pretty weak no matter where you go compared to American standards. I've always personally found the bathrooms to be clean and well attended, but of course it gets a little crazy on the weekend. Number of rotating daily drink specials on beers and cocktails, pinball and pool in the back, free nuts and pretzels, unpretentious, show up, have a drunk, chit chat up the regulars, have a good time. I've been in the Davie Village for years. Since I complained about what happened at the Junction because these two bars are partners I have been mistreated without any reason. I am Indigenous and the staff are mostly white it feels grossly like racism. This is very hurtful as a person. The server called me a Cunt tonight. I have not been mean or rude yet they classify me I don't know where or how to not serve me then speak to me in such a way. Respect is all I ask for because it is what I consistently give. You might say I'm a little biased because I worked at The PumpJack for nearly a decade, but it was my local watering hole even before that - and I lived halfway across the city at that point. Described as "Gay Cheers" by many, it's got that same everybody knows your name feel. The staff are friendly, the tap selection is great, and the peanuts and pretzels are free. Where once this was strictly a pub, it's now doubled in size and on weekend nights the place gets dancey. If you can make it in on a night when DJ Del Stamp is playing you can rest assured not only will the music be great, the night will get RAUNCHY! I can't recommend the place highly enough. read more

Apparently the Pumpjack recently got remodeled so our first time here was timed quite well. We were not out very late, it was midafternoon and after a day of walking around downtown Vancouver we needed to stop for a minute and get a beer and give our aching feet a rest. We went in, being the typical confused foreigners I suppose. I picked a Canadian IPA which was in the bottle and was good. Again pretty mild and Steve got something local. The bar is wide and spacious and alcholic drinking options were wide and generous. In the back of the bar was looked like a very charming space for dancing. But again we were too early to partake any of those activities and our aching feet would only make us look like stumbling buffons on the dance floor. Self Expression "dancing" perhaps more of a dance of pain. That would be acceptable if I were in high heels but I was in hiking boots so.... yeah. The Pumpjack was a really nice bar and we would not mind going back when we are in better shape and it is later in the evening. read more

How does a bar that doesn't have a big sign out front, live bands, or flashy decor do big business, year after year? The savvy owners know: keep the prices low, appeal to the locals, and keep it unpretentious. The beer's cheap, staff and customers are friendly, there's no cover, and the peanuts are free (so everyone gets peanuts breath, har). The ambiance depends on when you visit: early afternoon to mid-evening, it's like almost any other neighborhood bar (well, except for the four-foot tall papier mache penis on the side wall). At night the place caters more to the leather and bear crowd... though all are welcome. Sunday afternoons are like a neighborhood party. Come before 3:30 to avoid a lineup. TWO pinball machines--both great.... and zero people in the room housing the machines, on a SATURDAY NIGHT!! The main room housed about 70 male leather fans...we came on leather night, uh, I mean, we showed up to leather night. I was wearing leather. I was with my girlfriend, who was also wearing leather. We didn't know it was leather night. We did come to dance to rad tunes at a gay bar though! Fun times, for real. The drinks were strong and reasonably priced, the music was great (but too quiet, so we had to find somewhere else to groove), and the only drag queen in the place came to keep us company. "Soooo, how did you guys end up HERE? I mean, I'm all for diversity, but..."--says Filipino mama in Joker makeup ("...just came from a Batman party"). Yeah, uh, well, I guess my GF was the ONLY female in the spot. Anyway, good spot for real, well set up and great spot for a DJ booth...maybe not used to straight couples being interested in decent tunes and motion, but we'll return. Have I mentioned that I love gay men? I can't remember if I did or not? I love everything from their limp wrists to their sweet lisps. Ok I'm stereotyping, but I'm allowed, I'm a fruit fly! If you've ever walked down Davie street on a Sunday, you've probably walked by the Pumpjack without even knowing you were being checked out. It's pretty well hidden, much like all good things in this city, and I fear too many Yelp reviews will spoil my fun of being one of the few ladies in the establishment. I feel like Goldilocks surrounded by a million bears! (This one is toooooo hot!!) Only I have black hair and lots of tattoos, so its like Goldilocks after she was corrupted and turned to the dark side... oooh almost as naughty as this little haunt! There are some cast iron lights that hang over the bar, and its all black inside, and they have coat hooks under the bar so you can hang your jackets up by your bar stool. If you drink enough and you reach for your jacket you can accidentally cop a feel and pretend you were just reaching for the knob you jacket was on.... not that I've ever used that pickup line. This is the place where you go for a beer, or the place you go to cruise for a manly man, you know, like the leather daddy from the Village People. The only thing I wasn't prepared for when I came here was the music. Can someone please explain to me why we were listening to Brittney and Michelle Branch? It's a gay bar and I have been here before quite a few years ago. I think it's changed a bit. Or my perspective on it has anyhow. It used to seem more butch and almost always was only men. I went this past weekend on a Saturday night to meet a friend there and it was quite good. They had great dance tunes playing and a live DJ. I don't recall that from before. I also was not the only girl there, although there were maybe only 2 or 3 others, but more than I ever remember. I was surprised that a gay couple came up to me and said it was nice to see a girl there having fun. Kinda made my night and I did have fun! The drinks were cheap. $4.25 a single I believe. I don't know... I was drinking doubles for $8.50! Bought my friend a mug of beer and I think it was only $4. I was expecting to pay big city prices and was nicely surprised. We were able to chat while listening to good music. It was nice. I'd recommend it to others in a heart beat. read more

This place was awesome! My partner and I were looking for a chill bar to have a drink at that was gay friendly. This place came up in our search and it got rave reviews. It's on Davie street which is what a lot of people say is the "gay district". It was fantastic, the service was great. The bartenders were sweet, attentive and so helpful and awesome. The drinks were great. The atmosphere was very welcoming and chill feeling. A lot of bars that we have gone too are very cold or isolating, and that wasn't the case here at the Pumpjack Pub. I would totally recommend this place to anyone wanting a chill bar scene where they can get a good drink! I really wish we had a bar like this in Portland, OR that really felt welcoming and not all "catty" and "b*****" like some of the gay bars in Portland. You can't complain about the service in this bar - there is none. Have been their a couple times- each time their was a celebration or party going on; older patrons were holding a wake for one of their regulars who died - lovely and thoughtful. Place has been recently expanded.. Plenty of space for a pool table and pinball machines and hey why not a bowling alley- enough empty space for at least one lane. Most of the staff are friendly enough - with the exception of one charmless mouse like character. His one saving grace is he is efficient at cleaning tables. I can easily see him being a very competent prison guard. But don't let this guy deter you from a good time. Bring flowers on Sundays - just in case theirs a wake. read more

Not sure if they were paid off or just being assholes but I have been to clubs all over the world for 35 years and never saw such dunces in charge. The way the line was handled was shameful. One of our favourite places to play pool after work, the crowd is always very friendly and casual. Patrons are usually 30+ The ambiance is dark, and you are encouraged to leave the shells from the large peanut bins on the floor so you can get the feeling that its a bit sketchy, but I have always felt welcome here. The best time to come by is sunday afternoon - there is always a great crowd. read more

I can't believe that they asked a regular Sunday Customer to leave yesterday and when one of his friends went to explain he's on medication and the friend was told you can't mediate for him or talk for him and your friend has to leave and you will have to leave as well because you are being a trouble maker. All because he wanted to explain to them about his friends Medical Condition. The staff didn't have a problem serving them and taking their money that they tipped but didn't want to discuss anything just make an uninformed decision that this person was to drunk, even though the customer was not rude or rowdy. Certainly isn't a place I would like my money to go to with that attitude. And staff not taking the time to find out anything. read more
