As a 16th century pub, the ceilings are low, doorways are even lower and there are strange farming tools all over the walls. But enter the dining area and things are considerably spruced up. The menu is much more diverse than the pub's and every meal I've had there has been unfailing. Kids can play out back in the play area - much to the annoyance of the caravan owners directly behind it - and there's outdoor seating for when the sun decides to put his hat on. However, putting my pickiness aside it was worth paying just because of the location as I wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, and this place ticks those boxes. Thankfully I called to book ahead as we got the last reservation for the evening. Having now eaten here I can understand why as it's very popular and with good reason. The menu is fairly extensive and includes lots of local produce from seafood to meats and game. The selection was so great it took us same time to decide what we were going to have. Everything ordered came exactly as we had asked and the food was wonderful. I could say that my starter mushrooms in garlic butter was a bit too generous but for the price it was excellent value. There are a number of different seating areas in the King William IV. It's obviously grown to meet demand. We had a fantastic evening, the staff were very attentive (yet not overbearing in any way). The Manager made it his job to ensure everyone was happy with their food and the service which added a nice personal touch. The haddock and chips for the other main had light batter and was beautifully cooked. As far as pubs that serve food, this was was great value and served very nice food. The pub is beautiful and cosy, the landlady was kind and cheerful and the food.....oh god, the food! We both had a starter of pigeon, not something you usually see on a pub menu and it was superbly cooked and tasted amazing. For my main I chose the steak burger with chips and onion rings, the burger was big, flavoursome and juicy and the touch I like is that the tomato ketchup on table was all homemade, not from a bottle!
