It's a small pub, but I thought it was really cosy and warm and I quite liked it! It's sort of an old mans pub, but the interior is quite contemporary, with bare stone walls and big plush couches, and a well populated darts board in the corner. It's got a couple of 'rooms' almost, with two seating areas away from the bar, and its also a sports bar, with large screens showing sky sports channels. Great wee atmosphere, and good for a drink after dinner in Riva!

They have a full bar, and pride themselves on having life acoustic sets and karaoke on different nights. They also do an open mic night, which is a great idea I think! On Fridays and Saturdays there's a DJ on playing chart hits, but he also takes requests if you ask! Quiet most week nights but very busy on weekends, go here if you fancy a good wee night!

It is great bar for food, cocktails and has live nights, karaoke and other entertainment throughout the week. They have freshened up the look of the bar and it looks and sounds more like a bar from the West End of Glasgow rather than in Hamilton West. It also has a side room with booths which is great for getting something to eat. I've also seen it reserved for private functions. I haven't tried the new menu yet but it looks good. My friend and I just went out for cocktails. I was unfortunately driving but the bar staff were very accommodating and made me virgin French Martinis and they were absolutely delicious. If you're ever out that way pop in and you'll see what a difference it is with the refurb and check out the live music as there is plenty of local talent.

It was absolutely deserted, as you could expect on a Tuesday evening, but the bartender was in excellent spirits anyway and was chatting away whilst making our cocktails. As my friend Amy and I walked to the bar we noticed that the sign outside said £8 cocktail pitchers. And in we went. Once inside we noticed on the cocktail menu a single cocktail was £4, so we went up and asked for a cocktail each, and he said "You do realise a pitcher would cost the same and would get you probably 2 each?". Well you didn't have to tell us twice! I like the fact he actually whittled his bar out of some cash, because it meant he was being customer orientated which I've never experienced from staff in there. Amazing night had, and I might actually return now!

Modern and stylish, the bar mixes tradition with trendy chic which makes for an unusual atmosphere. We managed to get a table but there aren't many to come by, which makes it impossible to go in large groups if you want a seat. We ended up sitting next to complete morons for a good hour or so, and were unable to move because there were no more seats! That made for an interesting conversation at least. This bar is unique in that it does cocktails and shooters, much like the more modern bars and pubs in Glasgow do. My friend and i opted for the P.S I Love You cocktail, which sounded delicious; amaretto, Tia maria, cream, Kahlua and dark rum. Truth be told we chose this because it had the highest alcohol content, but it did sound nice! Unfortunately what we got was a tall glass full to the brim with a whole tub of Elmlea single cream and a few shots of liqueur. It was so thick and sweet, just like drinking cream from the carton, so after battling half way down the glass (yes i know, I'm a trooper), i left it at that. The cocktails were around 4 quid which was pretty good, although I'll be giving that a wide berth in future as it made me physically sick and i had to leave early on in the night, not a great impression! As the night went on the bar got increasingly busier until the floor was literally jam packed with boozers. It all felt a little sardine like and claustrophobic so we left to go somewhere else. Not a bad place, just unfortunate about the sickly cocktail. I would try it on a quieter night for the full experience.

You may wonder why I mention old lady bars, this is because The State reminds me of an old man's pub. It has the original features so has lots of wood and there's many old photos plotted around the seating area. I like them! Fortunately it does not reek of an old man's pub. You know that smell when you just walk by the door?! Bolk! The State is just off of Sauchiehall Street and just round the corner from the King's Theatre so this makes it a wee cheeky break from the pure madness of Sucksthelifeoutyou Street. The State is also good for wee gigs based downstairs in the basement. I've been to a couple of gigs and I do prefer a more intimate gig so sound was admittedly LOUD but it was good music I was listening to. *shimmy* If you want a wee change pop round to the State and I saw they also have plenty beers if you like beer. Bonus for beer drinkers! Enjoy!

I must say, I don't often write second reviews for places, but seeing as this is The State Bar and…read moremy last review was SIX YEARS AGO I will make amends. The reason for reviewing again, is since 2009 The State has dramatically increased the variety, quantity and quality of its real ales/craft beers, offering such an excellent selection that it was crowned Glasgow CAMRA Pub of the Year 2014. This is no mean feat as there are literally thousands of pubs stretching from Oban to Rothesay, Glasgow to Strathaven, Biggar to Airdrie all included in the voting. Fan of Fyne Ales? Oakham beers? The State has at least one beer from each brewery at any one time, being a member of each brewery's "Pubs of excellence" schemes. This also means very difficult to get and one-off beers are often launched or sold exclusively here. It's just a really great pub. And it isn't expensive either. £3.50 max for a pint, including sometimes 7% beers (which I really should stay away from but it's too damn hard given how tasty they are!). If you're not sure of what beer you fancy, ask for a wee taster and the bar staff will be happy to oblige and share their recommendations. Go there now! DO IT! PS - I almost forgot... this is like the only place in the West of Scotland that shows live cricket... if that's your thing. There's also live football on the Sky Sports screens, but it doesn't attract some of your usual footy watching crowd who are just in the pub for the "bantz". The sound is never turned up that high either, but the conversation can make this a loud pub at times!

If you manage to get seating here, guard it with your life--especially if it's in one of the cozy booths. There's regular live music of the Irish folk variety, and the atmosphere tends to get extremely lively. Just as nice is to come here during the down times and appreciate the authentic Irish vibe while have a good long chat with a friendly stranger over a very well pulled pint of Guiness. There's a beer garden for sunny days, and a thoughtful amount of outdoor standing room for smokers in the evenings. Be careful, though - when things get a little too lively the bouncers do not have a sense of humor. One wrong turn and you're out. So just settle in to whatever real estate you can grab and enjoy the raucous and cheerful atmosphere.

The first night we have been there was a Friday and it was pretty quiet still the atmosphere was really nice. Met a lot of nice people there. Unfortunately they already closed at midnight. The second night was on a Saturday after the Celtic match. The place was really crowed and it was even more fun than the night before. Later that evening they had live music. All staff and guests were really nice and you are more than welcome to stop by if you are a St. Pauli fan. The prices are pretty cheap. I will stop by there every time I go to Glasgow again.

Having researched the pub before going (The Times calls it the "Hardest pub in Glasgow") we were not sure quite what to expect... Wearing a St Pauli shirt and holding a pint of well kept and very well priced (£1.95) Guinness helped defuse any situation that could have arisen, but we didn't come across any agressive behaviour in the bar at all. The staff are dedicated and friendly and the whole pub is plastered floor to ceiling in Celtic photos, shirts, scarves etc. Do not come into this pub in a Rangers shirt, or any other football team's merchandise just to be safe. Do not talk about Rangers at all, just to be safe. They have a pool table, although it's best to let the locals play.
