OK, compared to nearest rival the Liquid Ship, where the closest thing to a square go is a "I had a toasted goats cheese and pinenut crostini not the chicken bolero" querying of the bill, it's rough. But in the grand scheme of things, it's an entirely acceptable venue for a quiet pint. What is perhaps a more accurate description is that, while the Western, Cleopatras, the aforementioned Liquid Ship and the Captain's Rest have all overwhelmingly succumbed to the gentrification of the West End, Wintersgills remains a traditional pub which has changed little over the years. The drink is reasonably priced, the food is plain fare and the football is on TV. Some of the regulars may be a little gruff but they'll certainly not threaten you. Or talk to you either, mind you. What a lot of people fail to realise is that the owners also go to great lengths to put on entertainment for their punters. This can range from psychic nights to live music, and of course the obligatory karaoke night which has eased the pain of those who were left karaoke-less following the demise of the Western Bar's legendary night. My last encounter with Wintersgills came on Hogmanay, when, in the lead up to the bells, a traditional piper appeared playing Auld Lang Syne... ...sporting an Adidas tracksuit. And this is perhaps an apt summing up of the pub as a whole; just because it's a little rough around the edges, doesn't mean it's not doing exactly what's expected of it.

I'm not sure much has changed in this wee pub besides the addition of a ladies toilet (or so I was told by one of the guys we were visiting). because all the fixtures were antique looking. I wasn't the only female in the place, but I was one of the few, indeed. I quite enjoyed the look and feel of the place as I do enjoy what I like to call 'old mans pubs'. I like feeling like I'm a girl who can hang with the guys and no one bats an eye. Aside from my big girly coat and my backpack that day, I think I did a fairly nice job. There was a major Rugby match on TV this evening, so the place was jumpin' with the locals looking to watch the match and enjoy a bevvy or two. It seems as though this place might serve food, as they do have a dining room of sorts just beyond the glitz of the bar area with it's slot machines and big TVs. We only stayed for one drink as we had plans on the rest of the night, but what I did experience of this place, makes me want to go back in the future to experience again. It was recently taken over by a new management team as well, with all new staff and plans to open up a kitchen providing home-cooked pub grub. The staff are really friendly and since they know we come in often, have offered to organise nights for us, as well as letting us know they'd be happy to make any meals for any of the guys we support through our charity. In addition to this, drinks are cheap and the locals are good fun :) it might look humble and unassuming from the outside but I've always had fun coming here!

The bar staff and locals may appear as mean and rough as Bridgeton itself but they're actually extremely friendly and welcoming. Old, bashed, a bit faded, but just amazing looking and comfortable as all hell in a basket. Drink wise, i'm certain this place could do with a wee overhall in terms of what's on tap. Or just sit with the book in front of me while I drink. All this time and I had never once stepped inside The Variety Bar. I've been missing out. Be warned, this is a small bar and on a busy night it seem cramped. I would not recommend this bar for taking a large group of friends because if even one other person has this same idea, you will be fighting for seats.... Okay so two tribes fighting over seats is an exaggeration, but anyway the bar is cosy. However, this is the only comment I have to make that comes close to being negative. A wide assortment of Beers, lagers (bottled and draught), spirits, mixers, wines and liqueurs will set the ball roiling nicely on your experience and you will marvel at the display of drinks that dazzles your eyes as you make that heart-wrenching decision that is your first drink. The decor sets a nice atmosphere with old timey fans that do not actually keep you cool but look nice. Leather seats, stools and lovely standing spaces will accommodate all posture preferences. The real stand outs, for me, are the fully functional fish tank (with real fish!) and the Batman pinball machine in the corner. These added real flavour to the place and have left an impression with me. Any time I talk about the place I mention them, but then I am a nerd so I would! The bar is located about 3/4 of the way along Sauchiehall St. (walking from the city centre) and so is ideally placed for anyone who wishes to continue their festivities with a night at one of Glasgow's many nightclubs or late night bars (The Variety closes at midnight). During the day they serve food, I have not experienced this yet but will soon. Food is served until 7 pm. So go ahead and treat yourself, visit The Variety Bar. While it may not look like much on the outside, there is a saying about books and covers that you should look up and then live by.

The bar itself is a big rectangle island in the middle of the floor - think Cheers - and it's surrounded by booths, tables, nooks and crannies for you to plonk yourself in. For me, it is one of those bars I'd have never considered going into before but now I know it's warm and welcoming, I'd go back without a doubt.
