The location, right on historic Frenchay common, is one of my favourite places in Bristol - beautiful, tranquil, and natural. The pub is a stones throw from the common and the church, the Oldbury Court estate, the Frome Valley walkway, and the national trust owned Frenchay Moor. The White Lion is now the perfect place to go for a bite to eat or drink when enjoying a stroll in the countryside.
Gone is the tatty decor and menus dominated with onions rings, nachos and other beige fried goods. In its place is a cosy "modern-vintage" style pub, a fantastic bar and a decent and reasonable classic pub menu. This beautifully refurbished establishment gives me even more reasons for donning the walking boots and going for a good stomp.
The impressive bar has a really extensive range of beers, ciders and lagers on tap and in bottle - a mix of both local and 'high end' international. All supported by a good range of wines, spirits and softies. They do a lovely mulled wine and cider too.
The food menu is typical gastro-pub fayre. It offers the burgers, grills, pies, fish and chips, hot sarnies, and a good specials menu. Sunday lunch is a popular occasion too.
It seems to be riding on the 'pulled pork' bandwagon, offering the slow cooked meat atop of various dishes, which isn't necessarily a bad thing I suppose...
The food is good quality, home-made, generous in portion, and and elegantly presented. Its not going to win Michelin awards, but it hits the spot, puts a smile on your face, and is light on the wallet.
The decor involves lots of rustic wood, leather, and brass - adorned with historic pictures of Bristol. It has a warm atmosphere, and always seems to be full of people.
I can't wait for the summer - when I can enjoy long evenings sipping cider in the garden to the rear, which overlooks the the river Frome and Oldbury Court... Sigh... Summer...
