In northern Illinois, we're pretty lucky as far as tack shops go. We'd be fortunate enough just to have Barrington Saddlery and Saddler's Row within an hour's drive and Dover a bit beyond. Oros Saddlery in Batavia has been a favorite pit stop for me recently en route to and from the barn, but, with its closing on the horizon, having The Riding Store in my backyard (I live in Naperville) has become more of the luxury than ever. From their unassuming home in Woodridge strip mall, The Riding Store offers a great spread of products for English-leaning riders across all disciplines and price points. If I want Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunters, they're on the rack, but there will also always be four or five similarly styled options for the more budget conscious shopper who still wants to look the part. Today, I breezed in and out of the store in fifteen minutes with a navy Grand Prix wool hunt coat (at 35+, I'm of the non-tech-fabric generation, I guess) in exactly the right size: Clearance Corner, sub-$100, brand new. I had procrastinated in buying for a show this weekend, and The Riding Store bailed me out, per usual. Staff is friendly and knowledgable. If they don't know the answer to a question, they'll find the right person to ask. Is this shop as large as the monoliths up north? Does its saddle inventory have the range of those stores? No, but in my book, it doesn't have to. Good quality brands, helpful service, and efficient shopping close to home. A+ from me. read more

Maybe I hit them on a good day, but I had wonderful luck at the Riding Store. I started at a little bitty tack shop further south where I really wanted to support them -- but they didn't have helmets or my size in breeches, jod boots or half chaps. Enter the Riding Store, where I walked in and explained that I was coming off 10 years of equestrian hiatus. The staff walked me through everything: offered advice on the fit of different breeches, helped me try on helmet after helmet, and had me try four different jod boots so I could find the best fit. I wound up spending a lot, but they seemed like they appreciated budget-minded riders and actually pushed the lower-end stuff -- which was nice, but never fit as well for me as what I left with that afternoon. I rode in my new gear at Double J this Saturday and it all felt wonderful. I had no idea the boots were even on my feet. I will be back for fleece lined breeches this fall. I've almost always had a good experience here. For the most part their staff is very friendly. However, on my last visit to purchase a new hunt coat, the staff didn't bother to ask if I needed any help...and I was the only one in the store! I was surprised since every other time I've been here, the staff has been very helpful and friendly. They have a good variety of products and I'm thrilled that they now carry saddleseat items! They have great sales and promotions as well. I'm chalking up my one bad experience to the fact that the store was closing in an hour, since every other time I've been here, the staff has been very nice. read more

We have been frequenting the Riding Store quite often these days! My almost 7 year old is really enjoying her horseback riding lessons. The Riding Store is an awesome place to find a great selection of the proper Horseback riding gear you need! They have sizes for kids and adults and a wide range of options on almost every item. When we bought our daughters helmet we could have spent $350-the most expensive or $39 - the cheapest. We went with a helmet in between that she liked. They have a wide range of Jodhpurs, boots, tact gear and fun gift items. The sales associates are very helpful and know their stuff. They are walking encyclopedias about horseback riding. Most have been riding their entire lives. The store can get quite busy on Saturdays and just a warning this stuff is expensive. It is not uncommon to walk out of there $500 poorer and only have a few items in your bag! So, be prepared! read more

One of the VERY few riding stores in the area. It's been here in this little strip mall for as long as my daughter started riding. I no longer go here because she's now 20 but she still goes here on her own for all her horse needs. It's also a great place to keep in mind for gifts for horse riding folks, young and old. read more

Fairly nice tack store. I wouldn't go around recommending it, but it's great because I pass by it on my way to the barn, so I can always stop there if i need something. They also have 15% off storewide sales like 5 times a year, which is aweseome The staff is VERY helpful. I always get lots of help with fitting etc. if i need it. They are usually very nice, but once or twice they were a bit rude. Oh well. For the merchandise- they have almost NO saddles. Probably around 20 or less english saddles (not sure about western) and they are all of the somewhat pricier type. For a small store, they have a lot jam-packed in there (which is good). Lots of cool horsey merchandise, but too much breyer horse crap. really, people come here for tack, not toys. If the store was bigger, i wouldn't care. My main disappointment is that they have none of the cheap crap I can buy online. All of their leads are around $15 when some on Dover or State Line are $6. Of course they are of better quality, though. And all of their saddle pads are 40 or above except the baby pads, and I there are ones of the same or better quality for 20. Overall, very convenient, but I prefer Saddler's row for bigger purchases or just shopping online when i feel too lazy read more

I have been visiting The Riding Store for a few years now and continue to be impressed with the service and again had a great experience last week. I came in with my dog looking for a specific type of breech and the staff helped me find multiple options that were great and I found just what I was looking for. I think on top of a great product selection I walk in always feeling welcome which is really nice. The staff is always very helpful and can give real experience reviews of many of the items since they use them themselves which I find very helpful. They continue to impress me and have made me a lifelong customer. read more

When I lived back in the area, The Riding Store was the place to go if you lived in the western suburbs. Each time it was such a pleasant experience and they have such a wide range of everything english! This store has a mix of English and Western tack which I think is good because the stores out here tend to be English only. It's really small but they have a ton of stuff. I always find the gloves i need here. The staff can be either really helpful or really stuck up, i guess it depends on the day that you go! My problem with the place -- I special ordered three different things and they asked that I pay for the items I ordered because they were running a sale and that was the only way I'd get the discount. I paid for stirrup inserts and two different pairs of gloves... it was almost a $90 order. Three months went by and i called and they never got my merchandise. they kept telling me to wait, so i did. I waited and waited and waited. Nothing, I called again and they didn't know who i was and what I was talking about. I had to go in and show them my receipt (which they didn't have a copy of!) and it was a little challenging to get my money back, but i eventually got it. I'll probably never shop here again, and if i do it certainly won't be a special order. read more

The young ladies were super helpful in determining a riding shoe size for my daughter -- didn't try to oversell to my cluelessness of riding but rather found the right item for a young rider. I stopped by The Riding Store today after my first-ever riding lesson. The clerk who greeted me was very pleasant and I browsed around a bit before asking for some help with suggestions for boots and a riding helmet. I mentioned that I was looking for some good basics but didn't want to spend a lot, and she helped me find a good fit in the boots at a reasonable price. She spent a lot of time helping me fit the perfect riding helmet that was not super expensive. Walking in as a riding newbie, I was concerned that I'd be pressured into buying more, but instead I was added to their sale mailing list so that when I decided to invest in pants, half-chaps & whatever else, I could plan to come during a sale. The prices overall were only a few dollars more than what I saw online, but the expertise and tips that I received were well worth it. read more

Really, REALLY nice group of ladies at this store! They might not be the largest or have the widest selection of items, but they are located in an area where tack shops and feed stores are nearly non-existent and they have all the basic supplies. The Riding Store was like home for us equestrains in the western subarbs. They have a HUGE selection of everything from leg wraps to gromming kits to breeches to Bryer Horses. The products were reasonably priced and good quality. The ladies who work there know a lot about horses and will help you. However, you do have to kinda persuade them so I think that they could work on that a lot more. 99% of the horsey items I have is from here and I loved to spend my Sunday afternoons browsing their huge selection. There is a good selection of items at this store. However, the staff spent the majority of the time I was there chatting at the front counter without acknowledging my presence. I ended up purchasing two pairs of riding pants totaling $165. When I checked out I asked if the items could be returned and the woman behind the counter said yes (she did not offer any additional information like .... you only have 24 hours to return them for a refund). Much to my dismay I went in a few days later to return the items and found that I was only going to be given a store credit! There is a 24 hour return period. Needless to say I am thoroughly disappointed with my experience at this store and I will be purchasing my riding gear elsewhere from now on and I would suggest to others to do the same especially if they buy an item that they may not be sure about because there is little hope of returning the item for a refund after the 24 hour period. read more
