Newport, as even its most loyal residents would probably admit, isn't an obvious destination for culture of the more educated variety. That doesn't apply at The Riverfront, however, a brave outpost of theatre, cinema, music and assorted performing arts on the banks of the River Usk. The theatre itself is a nice size and one of its genuine strengths is the more forward-thinking productions that regularly play - if you think theatre is all about dull regurgitations of William Shakespeare, the contemporary subject matter driving many shows will keep even sceptics interested. Workshops to encourage the public into the arts are a regular fixture, three art gallery spaces dot the building, while dance and comedy festivals embellish the programme, both punching above their weight in terms of recognisable names. Free parking can sometimes prove a bit tricky, so leave good time before any events if you're driving there, although it is within easy walking distance of Newport's main bus and train stations, so there's no real excuse not to go the public transport route. read more
