This grand old hotel has handicap accessible rooms on the first floor, but we asked for a double bed instead of two twins, so we were moved to the 2nd floor. To be fair, the desk attendant did ask if we could climb a few stairs. That's because after exiting the elevator at our floor, we still needed to climb a half flight of stairs to get to our hallway. The room was small with a window that opened to another wall of the building. The bathroom was as big as the sleeping quarters. The bathtub was huge and had grab bars, but also had high sides and was elevated a few inches off the floor. On the plus side, the lobby was grand with plush seating and a staircase that was the inspiration for the movie set of Titanic. A delicious continental breakfast full of options was served in the Wallace room. The hotel also has its own full service bar/restaurant just across the lobby. There are also plenty of restaurants and pubs within easy walking distance.Proximity to train station was super convenient. It's literally right next door. read more

Very old hotel. Beautiful entrance and location is perfect. That's about it. The beds & pillows are hard. There's no air conditioning, only a desk fan in the room. The window stayed open the entire stay. The room had a very musty smell. There are no safety handles near the shower to get safe access in and out. Very tall tub, with a slippery marble floor. The sink faucets need to extend out another 2 inches. Brushing your teeth and washing your hands, you'll get water everywhere. Also, paying as much as we did for the room, breakfast should've been included. Didn't realize you have to pay extra in your booking for breakfast. read more

This hotel actually smells bad. It's cold in Inverness and there is no heat in the bathrooms. They do not supply wash cloths even if you ask. Most of the people who work here are surly. The heated towel racks are broken. The bedding is scratchy and the duvet is very thin. The pillows are like rocks. Overall, this is a NO! read more

I booked this hotel after reviewing the pictures and amenities on the hotel's website. Based on these, I thought that this hotel would be very nice, but with a smaller room. I was completely wrong and was left feeling completely duped. Don't make the same mistake I did! The only positive to speak of for this hotel is the lobby. If you would like to spend all of your time in the lobby and grand staircase, then this hotel is for you. After arriving, I learned that I was completely wrong. The room was dated and dirty. The pictures provided by the hotel are very misleading. Please don't be misled as I was. I have provided pictures of my rooms and the hotel that show the reality. Additionally, there are 6 parking spaces for the hotel. If you cannot get one of these, they you have to pay to park in a city parking garage 2 blocks away. The hotel provides no adjustment or reduction for having to park in another location. read more

The Royal Highland Hotel is a grand lady sitting right next to the train station, its front lobby takes you back to a previous time. Unfortunately so do other aspects of the hotel. The ventilation system is not adequate in the rooms and the windows don't open so if the weather turns warm as it did for us, the rooms become a sauna. The heated towel rack doesn't have a shut off and is on all the time. There are a very limited parking stalls in front of the hotel, and the parking other is also used by taxi's picking up passengers from the train station next door. There is over flow parking at a public lot a couple of blocks over, but it is at the guests expense. read more

I don't mind a rundown hotel with lovely bones, but the service at the Royal Highland is the worst I've ever encountered. Rude staff at both the front desk and in the restaurant. We only ate at The Ash once because we felt we were being glared at by an older gentleman (the manager? Owner?) Until we left. I also requested ice and the same man dumped a bucket of it in front of me without saying a word. We requested face/wash cloths and the front desk clerk said they had never heard of them. Paid for a queen or king room and got two full size beds. Their response? "But at least you got a nice big room". We found dusty candy between the bed and table. I'll just stop there. I'd give this hotel ZERO stars if I could. The smell walking in was dusty and musty. My room was on the second level of the second floor. I was not told there was a second set of stairs where a separate set of rooms on the second floor were located. I had to go back down to the front desk and ask, and the woman told me to "follow the numbers". She was dismissive and rude. I went back up to try again and I ran into another person looking, as well, and we figured out the "secret" stairs on our own. As I was getting ready in the morning I found an insect crawling in a towel and another type of insect moving on the floor. The bath tub drain was backed up with a wad of hair. I reported the bugs and the hair to the front desk. They apologized and took down my room number. I went to have breakfast and found out there was only toast available for people with gluten sensitivities. Eggs, which are the standard offering for people who are avoiding gluten, were 7£. I returned to my room several (6 hours) later and my room hadn't been serviced. I went down to the desk to inquire when it would be done. The same rude woman at the front desk from the previous day told me they only service rooms after the second day. I explained to her the issue with the bugs and the hair, and she began making calls to other staff. After three different calls, she told me I would have needed to put the sign out on my door for it to have been cleaned. I told her that after the live insects and the hair were found my room should have been serviced immediately, and based on the conversation with the front desk in the morning, that was the impression I was left with. I left again for a couple hours and found that my room had finally been serviced. The hotel is run down. The carpets are worn and discolored. The wallpaper has been painted over. They claim the hotel was recently renovated, but it is old looking and old smelling. My stay here was extremely unpleasant and I felt dirty the entire time. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

This is a 160 year old hotel. It's incredible and beautiful and most important comfortable and right in the middle of downtown. Five minute walk from river ness and all great bars and restaurants. This is the first hotel of our trip and we absolutely loved it. Nothing negative whatsoever to say about it. read more

This was a quaint and lovely old hotel in Inverness. We stayed here for the night and had dinner in the hotel restaurant Ash. The room amenities included complimentary still and sparkling water, soaps, shampoos, biscuits, teas, coffees, and hair dryer. Wifi is free for the first 40 minutes (paid after time is up) but I was able to get a signal from the shopping mall next door and use their wifi. You may luck out and get a signal from nearby. The hotel is old but reminds me of the golden era of Hollywood. There were a good number of seniors in the hotel lobby after we dined in the restaurant. I'm not sure if it was a convention or if they just like to hang out at a hotel lobby on New Years. The lobby had a grand staircase with a Christmas tree still decorating it at the middle section. The elevator here is geriatric and slow as molasses. If you're on the first floor you are better off taking the stairs to your room. I was on the top floor and didn't feel like hauling my suitcase up the stairs. The rooms are smaller on the top floor than those on the first and second. It's weird but not a deal breaker. The ceilings on the top floor seem to be affected by the shape of the roof though. Breakfast in the dining room was a lovely affair. You give your room number and there is a breakfast buffet for you. There were the typical English/Scottish breakfast items (including haggis), along with yogurt, jam, toast, coffee, juices, and fruit. They even had mini jars of jam and honey. The staff was really amiable. The hotel keys are the old school kind with giant key rings so you don't leave them behind. The rooms are fitted with old and new furnaces. The old ones can't really be removed and the new ones work really well. It was raining the entire stay and my room was nice and toasty. One caveat, there's a sign on the bathroom door saying to keep the door closed when you shower because it'll set off the sensitive smoke alarms. At least you were warned. I wish we could have explored the surrounding town but we were told that they didn't have much night life, it was also raining, and most of the group had gotten sick by then. read more

My wife and I have been all over Scotland and even though we have had 5 star experiences nearly everywhere, the Royal Highland is our favorite. There is old world charm and the most accommodating staff. This has been the perfect homemade for day trips all over the north coast. read more

This hotel and location have the potential for a 5 star experience. There must be enough history behind these walls to fill a museum... but the staff know nothing about this great piece of Scottish history. When asked about the building they pointed wearily outside and replied that they thought there might be a plaque in that direction with details. When asked about the mural size modern paintings in the entranceway another shrug and point to a poorly descriptive plaque. When I took a walk through all the hallways my last night of the visit I found a treasure trove of original art on every wall. If only there was a self-guided tour or docent. The building is crumbling . The great hall for breakfast has a large portion of the ceiling appearing ready to cave in at any moment . Pub staff are surly. Breakfast non- memorable. They do not have poor housekeeping ... that would be an overstatement. There is no housekeeping. We had to go downstairs to retrieve a clean towel when needed. And they attempted to charge us for a deluxe room which we were not in. Advice: walk in, look at the entranceway, attempt to take a peek at the other artwork. Hoping the management can take efforts to restore this beauty and infuse staff with knowledge of its history and art. read more

Best thing going is centrally located! Dated, small rooms very small bathroom. Large group meeting there and bar closes before 11 PM local time. Tea yesterday was mediocre at best and took forever. If a couple checking in only gets 1 key. Under the most ideal circumstances never attached to another 24/7. Join the 21st century 2 keys per check in. By the way- a towel bar is necessity not luxury. Don't care if heated. Hairdryer where is that. Small bottle of hair conditioner costs how much? WiFi non existent. Take my word; do't bother. Walk to the train station to get online. Tired Old gal in the Heart of the City Our tour group leader uses this hotel for his tours of the area.The hotel is located right in the heart of the city. Accessible to all of the walkable locations in the heart of the city,this is the best attribute the hotel has going for it. Aside from a nice lobby, the rooms, the furnishings are tired and worn. The room was fair,but, with no A/C I can appreciate how uncomfortable this hotel will be during a heat spell. Our meals were very good and in every other measure this is a better than average hotel. Hotel was right in the thick of things. Many pubs and restaurants are walking distance. Our shuttle to take us to Loch Ness was at a bus depot a block from the hotel. Very convenient location in Inverness. Wifi was useless in the room. We had to go to the lobby to be able to use Wifi, which was inconvenient. It's also a bit of a larbyrinth of a hotel and could have better markings for the room. We were at the end of a smaller hallway and we had to go up to our main floor and came to a seemingly dead end without finding our room until we realized there was a smaller stairway for 4-5 steps off to the side which extended the hallway. Wasn't the clearest of markings, but manageable. Otherwise, hotel was beautiful and has a cool history of guests. Very Victorian-era, which added to the novelty of our travels. read more

We were lucky to stay at The Royal Highland Hotel last week, and during our stay we had the Highland Tea when we arrived while we waited for our room to be ready. It was lovely and for our sandwiches we chose egg and salmon. The cakes and pastries were bigger than what we expected, and I think three people could be well fed from the platter. We especially liked the strawberries with the chocolate sauce to dip them into, yum! It was delicious, and good value for money. read more

Was not impressed with this old hotel. It is run down and in need of some updates. Wheeling my suite case down the hall it got stuck because the carpets needs to be stretched. They charged for Wifi, the paint on the bathroom ceiling was pealing and when you take a shower you have to keep the door shut because the smoke detectors will go off. read more

Nice hotel but avoid the restaurant, Ash, like the plague! Fawlty Towers service (waitress blamed us when she gave us the wrong wine!) I had overcooked rubber duck with vegetables that had been boiled to death. My husband had the haddock and chips. The chips were oven chips and had a feint taste of gravy. He asked for mayonnaise and was given sachets of Heinz. Waitress brought the wrong wine, opened and poured glasses - no showing the label or tasting - and was pretty rude when we sent it back and asked for the correct one. The restaurant offered 20% discount on food. We mentioned this before ordering but the bill arrived without the discount. The manager very grudgingly changed it when we questioned the bill. Miserable service and food reminiscent of school dinners. Disappointing doesn't begin to describe the experience. read more
