That's saying something, as I've eaten some amazing fish and chips over the years - they're my thing. The portion of fish was huge, fresh and perfectly cooked. The batter crisp and yellow, complementing the soft, juicy whiteness of the fish perfectly. Even the chips were absolutely delicious, and the fish was so large I couldn't finish the chips, which my aunt could confirm has probably never happened before. A punter told us to drink "Gethin's Cyder" with our meal. This stuff wins actual awards and - if you manage to get your hands on it, which is not easy - you'll understand why immediately: it feels like you're stealing from the gods when you drink it. So why only 4 stars, when this is a 5 star review? Because I can be a snob, and I know that if I walked into a place with a 5 star review and it didn't look like a 5 star place, I'd turn on my heel and make a swift exit. Appearances deceive and you may not like the slightly shabby look of a very local pub with no pretences. Also, I remember thinking there wasn't much else happening on the menu that appealed. It is surounded by some of the most incredible views in wales!! It is a totally stunning place getting its name from the fact that it is totally as it used to be and covered in sinc mental. The interior is spell binding and transprts you back in time with its sawdust on the floor and hams hanging form the ceiling. This is just how a pub should be!! there are alsorts hanging up form old bicycles, pots pans.. alsorts. The grounds are idilic, and there is a mini sort of musium of the railway that used to run through the mountains transporting people and slate. There is a slate quarry right behind. that you can wallk along to.. not srue if its private proerty, but there is a hidden kind of lake in it, thats also amazing. The rustic charm of this place is like no other, full of welsh heritage, and pride. The food in this place is stunning, using only local produce. The prices are great also. The staff are super friendly and wont mind if your not speaking welsh. people really really must try out this place.

We have had countless family occasions and gatherings here, mainly because of it's great interior, history and the stunning environment. However, as an example I decided to take some friends out to dinner here after avoiding the place for 2 years. I had hoped the service snd food would be of higher quality..how wrong I was to have expected a change. I ordered a veggy burger as a change from my usual fish dish, my friends opted for plaice, the angry dog burger and cod & chips. My burger was just a sloppy slushy tepid mess, my chips were even colder. The dishes were slapped onto the table by a grumpy young waitress without any words or a smile, I was appauled at how bad it was and was really embarassed that my friends were experiencing the worse food and service they had ever come across..at one point we all looked at each other and laughed in disbelief because it was just unbeleivably bad! I never ever send food back or complain, but on this occassion I had no choice. I asked the waitress very politely if my chips could be warmed up, without a word she snatched my plate and stormed off..awful. Eventually she flounced back, slapped plate onto table and walked away. I have been a waitress and I would never treat diners, or anyone for that matter, like that. It wasn't busy and there were plenty of staff. My friends dishes were also cold and bland. For the prices and provenance of the sloop you'd expect food, portions and service to match! It's not a one off experience, this type of service, small portion, cold food has happened more than I care to remember and unfortunately myself,my family and friends have decided not to spend a penny more there which is a shame as we live nearby and would love to spend time celebrating family occasions inside it's great interior. I wish I'd never parted with my money on that night, I should have complained to the management, but all of us just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible.
