I traveled to the Saint Paul Hotel for work and the best way I can think of describing it is.. vintage! This historic hotel has a beautiful lobby, but it feels like a blast from the past. The rooms feature wooden frames and drabby colors. My room was on the smaller side, but offered all the essential: bathroom, desk, chair and bed. The gym was on the top floor, and while small features common cardio and strength training equipment (treadmill, elliptical, leg press, free weights, yoga balls). The space feels intimate. A lot of the machines are quite close together because the space isn't super large. From the MSP airport, it's about a 20 minute drive. read more

My company booked us here from a week long conference and I'm happy they did over me trying to find somewhere next to the airport. The hotel is beautiful and the lobby was even more dazzling as it was decorated for the holidays. The rooms were pretty standard in decor but even the "basic" rooms are larger than many I've been in. There was a desk for me to get some work done and a chair if I had guests. With a lot of extra room between the bed and TV, just in case you want to do some yoga. A few of my colleagues got suites and they were 2 rooms with many sitting areas and a couch. The bed is very soft and not my favorite, but still good. There were plenty of blankets and pillows as well. I will say heating and cooling the room had a bit of a learning curve. It was pretty cool outside when I visited but inside the room was mid 60s. I like it at around 70 so the heater would heat then go off then go back on not long after. So if you visit in the cooler months, and are like me I suggest mid 70s for the thermostat. All had the standard TV and books about the area. It also had a snack bar, drinks in a small frig and a mini mini mini frig for me to put food in. The frig find those side sandwiches sized to go containers so keep that in mind. And like many hotels, the mini bar is no cheap so if you don't want to be tempted you may want to get some snacks. For sound, I will say you can hear the street and the park had some music playing so that could be heard. On the flip side, I was right next to the elevators and couldn't hear them at all. The location was not far from the airport, 30 minute drive, but there isn't a lot of parking if you're renting a car. It is close to many areas like restaurants, the hockey rink, coffee shops, offices. Most places are either a 15 to 20 minute walk or even shorter drive. I had my choice of restaurants while there. While I wouldn't advise walking, like I did, the Capitol building and Summit Hill were close to see when there is a bit of free time. All in all, it was a lovely stay and should I be back will be my first choice. read more

This hotel has an excellent location with various attractions well within walking distance. Upon checking in I encountered an extremely blank-faced and unfriendly desk clerk, which upon further interactions with the front desk staff appeared to be the norm. In the room I noticed a chip in the bathtub edge and a loose shower-head. Aside from an elaborate lobby nothing about the hotel stood out as a self-billed luxury hotel. Not our best experience in a hotel... we arrived late without our luggage but that's okay we can manage. Due to the late hour we arrived, the only hot food option was room service. When I first called on my cell phone because the phone in our room was dead, they asked us for our number to call back because they were too busy to take our order. The maintenance guy who came to fix our phone, took our room service order. An hour later our food showed up after a supervisor came to our room to chastise is for our attitude. The food was hot, burnt but some parts were edible. The hotel claims to be 5 star but resembles a Motel 6. We will stay anywhere else if we are ever in St. Paul again. My wife and I visit the Twin Cities many times a year as both our children live there. We have stayed in many, many hotels, looking at the visits as a chance to relax and unwind. Half the trip is to visit the kids, the other half to enjoy a weekend of "out on the town". The hope the hotels add to the experience. Not so much with the St Paul. The lobby and bar area are classy as all get out. The service was extremely solid. I even liked the location. All that said, the room itself was not worth the $200+/night we paid. The view we got was blah, the TV on a dresser to the side of the room made for uncomfortable viewing, and the bathroom left much to be desired. The water pressure was so egregious, it could take off skin. I fiddled with it in hopes of enjoying a long vacation shower, but to no avail. And with that amount of hot water pouring out, those cloth shower curtains fly up and onto your body as your showering. Gross. Grosser yet was the inability for the drain to keep up with the amount of water. Standing in used water just kinda...sucks. Everyone was pleasant and sweet, but the room lost the review. read more

As much as I love the St Paul Hotel / St Paul grill... Because what's not to love... This review is for the two weekend Pazzaluna pop-up event That happened October 14th 15th 16th and 17th 18th 19th. You couldn't ask for a better deal for $55 You had your choice on the Prix Fixe menu of a starter, salad, entree and dessert. It was so great to walk into the old space, even if it wasn't the classic Pazzaluna interior the feel and the smell, the ambience and excitement was all there. It was wonderful to see some of the old servers and beyond amazing to experience some of the timeless standards once again. As soon as I saw the stuffed meatball and the veal medallions on the menu my mouth started watering.... We sipped some great cocktails, shared our delight and reminisced with are beautiful server Rachelle and the owner. It was just as inviting as ever in fact we were as dinner with my goddaughter on the heels of her birthday and in classic gracious Pazzaluna fashion, we were offered a free dessert a free dessert, a very fancy kitty cocktail and prosecco with collectors glasses for the adults at the table. We wouldn't have missed this pop-up event for the world.... And look forward to, hopefully another pop-up during the holidays. It's sad to have seen such an old standard leave downtown St Paul shortly after COVID, so we reveled in the short time that we had this past weekend. It was amazing. Here we are back visiting family in St Paul and staying at the hotel for our second time. Everything is perfect here. The front desk lady going all the way outside with us to give directions to dinner location we asked about. Breakfast via room service on Sunday morning was so good with beautiful presentation. Ok. So we just stayed the night and didn't get to dine as we had other plans but we had just the nicest experience, Drew at the front desk was just amazing. Pleasant and welcoming , WH hi h you would think would be a "give me" in the hotel business. This guy, he's the real deal professional! The rooms are smaller and decorated a little old fashioned , but that's the whole point. Clean as a whistle too. The bathroom wax updated and very cozy. The hot water was amazing and the shower head while not super fancy, it h Just felt so good! The real stand out for us was the valet! These guys (didn't see any gals) were Johnny on the spot and super nice! We've been traveling this past year a bit and this was by far the best valet we've had. And that's is meaningful. Made a stop tonight at the saint paul hotel. This place has always been a favorite of mine because of the large whiskey collection. The staff was extremely professional and everyone seemed happy to help. I sipped on a few glasses of pinot and for appetizers I had the shrimp and those were amazing. The flavor was great and they were cooked to perfection. Also had rhe Cajun beef tips and omg they were nice juicey and tender. This is a nice historic hotel that has preserved all of the good things about being a classic hotel while keeping up with modern amenities. I stayed here in March 2020. Society was seizing up and hiding from itself to save itself, and at just that time I found myself with the awkward need to be out of my house for the weekend. So while this review may have an odd tint to it, I can still very happily report on how comfortable the accommodations were and how well I was treated. I upgraded to a room with a single king sized bed, and I'm struggling to adequately convey just how incredibly comfortable it was. It was just heaven to be relaxing in bed in my room. And since I was just holed up in there for most of my weekend, I also enjoyed sitting in the surprisingly comfortable armchair by the window for quite a while. I ordered room service and got a lot of really good food. I had a pesto chicken pasta that was really delicious, a very tasty wild rice soup, and some more-elegant-than-it-sounds cheese fries. It was great, but the pricing was consistent with the overall level of luxury. So just make sure to keep an eye on that. There were also a bunch of fancy items available from the minibar, but I had unwittingly booked a package that included a $15 minibar credit. I snacked on the chocolate-toffee-pistachio things and they were great! For most people, a big draw of staying at this hotel is the classy ambiance, and it really delivers that. They opened the hotel in 1910, but extensively remodeled the rooms in the 1980s. You kind of get the best of both worlds, because it's got all the atmosphere of its turn-of-the-century origins but it's in great shape. The location on Rice Park makes for great views and quick walks to the Ordway, the Science Museum, and all the great Downtown businesses, every single one of which was closed during my visit. You can also expect to be treated with maximum courtesy, as I was during my stay. I may have come during a time of tumult, but I came for luxury and that's what I got! read more

Stay here!!!! You won't regret it!! One of the cutest hotels and has so much character. Even the bell hops outfit shout classic, timeless, and fun. They have a really awesome bar in here that makes fabulous espresso martinis and the bartender was awesome. Rooms were clean and beds were comfy. I got great sleep while staying here. Our stay at St Paul Hotel was amazing! From the moment we dropped our car off for valet to checking in and enjoying the amenities even to the minute we checked out, everything was absolutely brilliant. We stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is conveniently located only a couple of blocks away from the Xcel Energy Center and less than a mile away from fantastic restaurants. In fact, there is even a lovely, upscale restaurant within the hotel (see separate review). Speaking of, we wanted to dine there on our first night but the only open availability was at 8:30 which would have been rather late for me. Upon check-in, we had expressed our interest in dining at the St Paul Grill that evening but wasn't sure how busy they would be. The host graciously offered to check for us while we settle in as the concierge was unavailable at the moment. He promised to do so immediately and give us a call back with an update. Not half an hour later, he attentively informed us of the remaining availabilities for the evening which sadly did not work out but we truly did appreciate the effort. The lobby was quite exquisitely decorated with a piano and a seating area which we learned later was used for events. There was a tea party on Saturday evening with very dressy patrons attending. There is also a small lounge/bar within the hotel. We stopped by and had a couple of cocktails before heading back to our room after dinner one evening. The bartender was friendly and did well with the cocktails! The room itself was nice. It had most of the essentials and stocked with a few adult beverage options and snacks you might want to enjoy during your stay. Of course, for a price but certainly convenient! They do provide you with some comfortable robes as well for lounging. You can also order breakfast for delivery at a time of your choosing. We ordered breakfast and enjoyed it in our room. It was quite nice. Valet service was great. We decided to explore and do some touristy things while there and got our car in no time. When we got back, they attentively valet parked the car once more without waiting too long. Everyone was friendly and very helpful! If I find myself in St Paul again, I would definitely not hesitate staying here. It is definitely a luxurious hotel with wonderful service. read more

I attended a small conference at the St. Paul Hotel. First, it's gorgeous! Second, the staff was friendly and helpful, including Brian at the front desk, James the bartender, and a special shout out to Marty who gave us so many great recommendations and entertained us with stories about the hotel! (I've been sworn to secrecy haha!) Rooms were great. Food & drinks are a little pricey, but that's to be expected. Lots of dining within walking distance--starbucks is half a block away. Afternoon Tea - Just Sweets I took someone to Afternoon Tea for their birthday in February. First let me say the servers were excellent! Everything else only meh. The description when I booked, and in the email confirmation, said "This two-hour event is fashioned after England's afternoon tea and consists of a variety of tea sandwiches, savory, scone and two tiers of sweets." However we were served the Chocolate Lover's Tea... NO SANDWICHES & anything savory was covered with chocolate. Luckily the birthday girl has a serious sweet tooth. Unfortunately, a meal of sugar made me ill & hangry. Also our table was closest to the door, so it was cold. The chairs were uncomfortable, especially for a 2 hour event (wingbacks would at least give some protection from the breeze). Also my view was of a wall & the back of an easel a foot away from our table. Not posh at all. I would have maybe understood had we been a last minute reservation, but we booked a month ahead & I made sure that more tickets were available in case our friends wanted to join us. We won't be rushing back anytime soon. didn't take a picture of the first course, but it consisted of a quarter sized mousse, 1/4 piece of "toast", and 3 small potato chips. read more

I think it's one of the most elegant and oldest hotel in St Paul. It's very close to Mississippi River, and right next to a beautiful park surrounded by nice historical looking buildings. Check in was easy. There are two elevators and they were fast. Room was modern and clean. TV had good channels. Free internet actually worked okay. There was a coffee maker and it worked fine. They have drinking-water, alcohol and snacks for a free (water was $6). They only provide room cleaning if you request it otherwise they do not. I tried their restaurant, food was good and service was friendly. There was hair dryer and ironing in room. Bed was comfy. I liked the armchair and ottoman facing the TV. Air conditioning worked very well. There are toiletries in bathroom. From outside it looked hotel is connected to skywalks but I did not try it. There is gym on 12th floor and it has basic gym equipment. They have taxi waiting at the main door. For Uber and Lyft, you need to walk outside to main front street. read more

Review #15 - We went on a one night staycation for a change of scenery from Minneapolis. We walked around downtown St Paul, window shopping, checking out the beautiful park system and etc. made for a fun day! Although no restaurants were allowed to open for dine in at the time we were there, the takeout options were sufficient. We had a great pizza from Cosettas, but you can order Sushi from Sakura, Thai from Ruam MIT Thai or Mexican from Pajarito and they are all within walking distance from the hotel. There are also lots of park options in the area so you could definitely find an empty bench close by and chow down on your food. Drew was at the hotel front desk most of the time during our stay and we were happy chatting with him. The hotel was super quiet with only about 10% occupancy, so that explains why we didn't see other hotel guests during our stay. We were so happy and honored to finally experience a stay at this historical hotel. read more

Would not recommend the afternoon tea service. Way too expensive for what they offer. They don't even have a tea menu.

We stayed here for a conference recently, choosing this location because of its interesting appearance, history, and location. The price was comparable to other hotels in the area, and it's nicely situated near several decent restaurants. The service was good, and the inside was really nice to see. It's in a much nicer location than most neighboring hotels, situated right next to a nice park. The reason for the reduction in stars is the room: my sheets smelled damp and had an odor like they had sat in the washer for too long before being dried, which basically invaded my clothes and the room-- everything smelled like it. The shower curtain had red spots along the bottom edge (bacteria culture, possibly serratia marcescens?), a brownish handprint, and clearly hadn't been washed or bleached in a while. The toilet would sometimes get stuck, and I would have to wiggle the handle then hold it down to get it to flush-- sometimes it ran/made dripping noises all night and I had to close the door to get some sleep. I was also disappointed that the restaurant doesn't serve breakfast, and you can only order it through room service (though, it was pretty amazing-- everything was delicious!). I think I would consider returning at a later date, because it's a nice hotel in a nice area, but hope that they fix these particular problems so others don't have to run into them. read more

After being home for 100 days, we were in dire need of a staycation over the 4th of July weekend. It was very quiet - as expected. The restaurants were closed and room service was only available from 8am-7pm. That was the most irritating part for us since we tend to eat dinner later. But we made it work! The room service was delicious and was delivered promptly. No complaints from me. Was a little bummed that the St. Paul Grill was open. From our room, we were able to enjoy multiple fireworks shows. I stayed here during the pandemic. I was nervous but they seemed extremely careful. There was only one guy working the front desk but I don't think there were very many people staying here. In fact I didn't see any other guests. I got a really good deal on a room. Normally I could not afford this place. The room was gorgeous. It was clean and comfortable. From the lounge to the front desk to the doormen, it was top-notch, and some of the best service that we have ever received. (And we have traveled all over the world!) The doorman wears a Top Hat. They offer a five course, two hour Afternoon Tea. The guest rooms have a K-Cup Machine You hear classical music in the lobby. The lobby is beautiful, with opulent chandeliers, a faux finish tray ceiling, and gold elevators. Get the picture? Luxury, elegance, first rate everything. My room was very comfortable, had a nice work desk, free wi-fi, nice TV with HBO, a good sized bathroom where the shower had good pressure and temperature. The towels were plush, and so was the bathrobe. You get a newspaper at your door every day. A real St. Paul newspaper, not a USA Today. It's in the heart of downtown, between Rice Park and the Travelers building. Easy walking distance to the Xcel Energy Center and a dozen or so restaurants. read more

We spent three days here during our daughter's wedding weekend recently. All we had was positive, great service throughout our visit - from the moment we got out of our car out front, to check in, during our stay, and check out. We had to check our car in and out multiple times during our stay. Valet staff was friendly, quick and conscientious, no matter the time of day or night. Before long, I was greeted with, "The white GMC, right?" Front desk personnel were always friendly and available. We were amazed how they could do so much so well with what seemed to be a small number of people. Thank you! Front desk person Drew recommended a great place to eat nearby which we ended up visiting twice (that will have to be another review). Rooms are not automatically cleaned every day unless requested. Since this was communicated clearly up front, it was fine. One day we had room cleaned, the other not. No on-site restaurant operating currently, so we cannot evaluate the food. They had an evening bar open Friday and Saturday but due to wedding activities, we did not stop by there. Check out was fine. Since we were paying for a number of rooms, we wanted to make sure everything was correct. Only one wayward parking charge, which they quickly removed after we noticed it. The St. Paul is a nice, well decorated, comfortable hotel that was recommended to me by a colleague. There is a very weird stuffed bear in the room (see pic) for purchase for 20 bucks. The room was clean but I saw some stray long hairs (I have little hair remaining) in the bath room. The staff is helpful and friendly. There are some problems with the room that I would not expect in a hotel this expensive. First, insufficient electrical outlets. Second, the HVAC does nothing but blow cold air. I had to shut it off. In winter this would have been a problem instead of just annoying. Third, the towels are about as comfortable as drying oneself with sand paper. These issues need to be resolved. read more

I haven't eaten since yesterday thanks to the Easter Brunch at the St. Paul Hotel. What a great experience! Brunch was in the Promenade Ballroom and featured 6 distinct food stations, beautiful table settings, and a talented pianist strumming a grand piano. For $49 per person ($19 for ages 4-10), I could choose from fresh fruits and salads, seafood on ice, chef carved prime rib or honey ham, made to order omelets, and more. Adult beverages are offered at an additional cost. The seating was well managed, Staff was amazing. Food coma is just wearing off. We plan to return for the Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday, May 14. Reserve a seating time between 9:30 am and 2:00 pm to experience this lavish affair and go HUNGRY! read more
