History

Established in 1865.

In 1865, William Booth and his wife Catherine established the Christian Mission, later known as the Salvation Army, aiming to combat poverty and religious indifference with military precision. Booth structured the organization like the British army, with uniformed ministers as “officers” and new members as “recruits.” The Christian Mission, which granted women equal ranks to men, initiated “campaigns” in London’s poorest areas, starting with soup kitchens and expanding to offer various forms of aid. Renamed in 1878, The Salvation Army opened its first U.S. branch in Pennsylvania two years later. During the Great Depression, it provided essential services, and it played significant roles in both world wars. Today, headquartered in London, it operates in over 130 countries, running evangelical centers, hospitals, rehabilitation programs, community and social work centers, secondhand stores, and more. Funding comes from voluntary contributions and publication sales.

The demographic for this store is probably teenager-mid twenties, the employees were all teenagers. One good thing for someone looking for extra small size there are a lot of stock to choose. The store is 90% woman's clothing 10% mens. It says on sign near register no products will be taken unless they've been freshly laundered if you were wondering how clean. If I could give them 0 I would! I was there just yesterday, and they have multiple doors but only…read moreone is unlocked. I was ready to drive away because I thought they were closed but called and they told me only the door by the ramp is open! I suggested a "use door by ramp" sign but they just laughed at me. Not only were they not very friendly. They weighed a big handful of all sterling silver (over 14 ounces!) and offered me $10, and when I complained that the going rate, as indicated online that morning, was over $2000 per ounce, they insisted that pawn shops only offer 70 cents on an ounce! And that's not the biggest rip off! I also had few small14k and one 18k gold piece to pawn - a few pieces. They offered me $300, which I also didn't think was fair. I then drove to South Charlotte Jewelry & Loan who loaned me $533 for the same gold (without the sterling silver) that Smart Pawn offered for $300!! So beware! I would never, ever go back to Smart Pawn and Jewelry again! Their prices are out of touch and they are ripping people off! At South Charlotte they were sweet as pie - like I was in a different world. They deserve your business and are only 10 to 15 minutes away from Smart Pawn but worth the drive!
