I'm limited by what I can say about the Great Escape by the promise that you make not to reveal details about it before you start. So this may be short on details and rather vague. But it was great fun and if you like puzzles, this will be a good activity for you. You must reserve ahead of time - you can book a group of 10 or, if you don't have that many, join another smaller group. I went for a friend's birthday party - some of us knew each other but others didn't. I do think that worked out better than a room of complete strangers but who can say? You'll pay ahead of time too (about $29 each) - our group leader paid for everyone and we just paid him back. You arrive 10 minutes before your start time and are guided upstairs for a "briefing." This is one of my few complaints - the building is not very well marked and the starting process is a bit unclear. If you don't know the address, you'll have a hard time finding it as there is only one poster in the window. Which, for the most part, is fine. It adds to the mystery. But we weren't sure how to get in (it was locked) or if we were just supposed to wait outside (I think you are). After the briefing, you're in the room. And... I really can't tell you much about that. You need to be observant, communicative, and a little creative. The amount of detail and effort that was placed into creating the room is fantastic. You can tell the creator really had a passion for this project. I could see this as a fun team-building event. It definitely worked for a birthday party (which kind of makes me wish I'd done it myself). My other major complaint: You can't really do it a second time. It was so much fun that I happily would but now I know the secrets and you can't really recreate the magic a second time.

The host, Alan, managed to stay in character while still conveying his genuine enthusiasm for the game. We quickly dove into the game and started working together. Our small group ended up working to our advantage; I know many people prefer larger groups with varied skills, but we liked it with just 4 of us. Alan gave us subtle hints to steer us in the general direction, but mostly watched us excitedly following the thread of the mystery. The amount of work put into making this place feel authentic is incredible. I am SUPER PROUD to say that we solved it!!! To be fair, we technically went 42 seconds over the time, but we still felt like winners because of our teamwork. Alan talked to us briefly afterwards, and you could tell he is truly passionate about what he does. We hadn't even realized how hungry we had gotten because we were so immersed in the mystery. Overall we were probably there a total of 2 hours, including the introduction, the puzzle itself, the "debriefing" and the pictures at the end. Excellent experience, especially since this year marks the 100 year anniversary of the explosion. Go do this awesome escape room before time runs out!

I've taken either ferry across the harbour with my bicycle for a cost of only $2.50 and then rode the bike trails/streets or I've asked for a free transfer for bus #60 to Fisherman's Cove. If you are a tourist with a car, or local, the drive is only 15-20 minutes and there is lots of free parking. I highly recommend Fred and his company and have thoroughly enjoyed this 'hidden gem' of Halifax : )

Yes, if you punch the hell out of the bags, you will lose weight, you will lose inches, you will build muscle. But you'll also boost your immune system, learn techniques that could actually help you protect yourself in a nasty situation and give you the confidence that comes from hitting hard. The Hit is a franchise rather than a chain, and Phil and Steffi run the show by themselves. They know everyone's name, and keep track of their progress so they can show you how to up the difficulty at a station if they notice it's getting too easy for you (doh!) You're never left on your own. If you ever have questions or want to push yourself, they're right there as you go through the circuit. Basically, you get a personal trainer with the cost of your membership. Now I'll be upfront with you. I don't love The Exercise. I find it boring and typically don't like having to use my muscles for any reason, let alone sweating in public. So naturally I would have assumed that adding a harness and unflattering footwear into the mix would kill the experience before it even began, but no. NO! I looooove Ground Zero and, as it turns out, I looooove rock climbing (indoors). It's also stupid cheap ($12 for a full-day pass), so you don't have to break the bank to find out if you even like it. The owner has usually been the one on-site whenever I've visited and he totally fits the part. You can tell he must be pretty hardcore when he's not 'in the office' but he's able to make that enthusiasm work even when he has to deal with n00bs like me. He'll get you set up, teach you everything you need to know, make sure you're not going to plummet to your death because of your own stupidity, and then he leaves you to do your own thing. The big walls are a blast, the slanted ones make me question if my arms originally belonged to a six-year-old girl, and the bouldering sections are a great challenge if you can't cope with the heights. Important: choose who you come with wisely. They will be the ones holding your ropes. And staring starting at the awkward crotch-bunch that happens once you're harnessed up. So...there's that.

For example, last winter, I learned to ski. This summer, my goal was to learn how to rock climb. For my birthday, my boyfriend surprised me by taking me to Ground Zero, an indoor rock climbing gym. I was excited, but sceptical that I could do it, being an avid couch potato and all. Ground Zero had a really cool atmosphere, that's the best word to describe it. They had a lounge area with a lot of great reading material on climbing, you could even enjoy a coffee while you sit and read. Other than the lounge and the main desk the place is virtually empty, save for some crash mats. After we got suited up in our gear, which was minimal and easy to put on, we were given a crash course in climbing. The rundown was thorough, but short, so we could get to climbing as soon as possible. Naturally, I made my boyfriend go first. When it came to my turn, I was nervous, but hey, the walls don't look that high. Until you get about half way up, then you feel like you're halfway to the moon. I'd be lying if I said I didn't poop my pants a little. If you're not in the best shape ever, like me, climbing can be tough. It's sweaty and exhausting work. You hit your breaking point, where you think, I can't physically go any further. Or I can't reach, I can't do it. But you have the staff there and a partner to shout their support to you. When you take a chance, push yourself, reach out, grab that final hold and pull yourself up, it's like seeing the face of God. It's so exhilarating, you feel so proud that you were able to push yourself and make it. It's one of the most amazing feelings I've ever known, I felt like I could so anything. Whether you love rock climbing or you've never been, I recommend Ground Zero. It's a great workout, it's exciting, fun and there is a very helpful and supportive staff behind you the whole way.

It's 4 kms or 2.5 miles, a loop trail, and has elevation gains of 93m or 315 feet. The trailhead located off the Bedford Highway on Kent Avenue (across from the Rotunda and has parking lot has space for ~20 vehicles In order to get to the ravine trail, you will need to follow this path from the parking lot: Rockingham Loop (Blue), Governors Loop (Red) and the Ravine Trail (Orange). These trails will take you to the bottom of the ravine. It's here the trail ends, but connects with other trails. We recommend making a right at the bottom. It will allow you to follow a beautiful stream - which is perhaps the most beautiful area of the park. Allow yourself about 2 hours to complete this loop. The equipment and facility are well kept and clean (which is a major perk), and the staff are friendly, but one of the major problem is the price. Prices are set for blocks of laps and blocks of 5 laps only last about 10 minutes, which left me disappointed after my turn was up. Hot Hint: There are opportunities for group and party rates, just call ahead to reserve a time.
