The Sandpiper is my favourite place to eat - lovely theme comfortable. I went yesterday for a roast dinner with my daughter. usually have no complaints, The roast was not up to standard - the lamb was fatty and very chewy, the potatoes where not the usual crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. I was in need of a good place to feed a group of four of us, with one child and two vegetarians in the party - a friend recommended The Sandpiper. This is a characterful food pub, with exposed beams and stonework and an open fire. Plus, they have a 'sandpiper' theme going on with the pictures on the wall, which I thought was a nice, quirky touch. There was a nice crowd and atmosphere here on a Saturday lunchtime. The waiting staff and the cooking were all good. I had a daily special which was spinach and ricotta strudel. It was mostly filling with just a light and crispy pastry crust. This came with a small jug of red pepper sauce to keep things moist enough. Also, boiled potatoes carrots and shredded cabbage, although these were only OK, and I felt needed a bit more effort in terms of a little bit of butter or even a more colourful veg presentation. My niece had a chicken BLT which she enjoyed and finished. My sister had the courgette, carrot & chickpea burger with fries - she is quite a picky eater, but she finished the lot. My mother had an asparagus and broad bean risotto, which she picked at although to be fair her appetite is quite variable. It was a cold, wet day when we visited so we were glad to be cosy indoors. There is a substantial beer garden outside, but as there is a busy road just the other side of the hedge, I would wonder how tranquil that would be. Context is everything here - although I don't eat out a lot, as a vegetarian I don't feel confident of pubs in this part of Lancashire offering a decent veggie selection. The Sandpiper is well above the local average, and so I would be likely to come back here. read more

Went to the Sandpiper for lunch on our way to Martin Mere. It is part of the Vintage Inn chain so it is very nicely done out with comfy seating, clean lines and exposed beams. I have eaten at a few Vintage Inns before and the food is always good and there is a lot to choose from on the menu. The standard of food at the Sandpiper was no different. I ordered the fish pie which was full of fish and the mash potato was lovely and creamy. My husband's burger and chips was also very good. I also liked the fact that you could choose a small pudding and a coffee for dessert. I had the sherry trifle which was amazing, the homemade custard tasted divine. The only thing stopping me giving the Sandpiper 4 stars is the service. It was surly from start to finish and we had to wait ages for them to clear away the plates after our main meal. In fact they took them away at the same time that our desserts arrived. Think some customer service training is desperately needed here. read more

Originally went here for my birthday a month ago and the service was great and the food was amazing, until tonight. I have never been so disapointed. Booked a table in advance which was all fine, the dissapointment and annoyance began as we tried to order. Our server for the evening was BEN!! We booked our table for 8.30pm and he told us they stop taking orders at 9 which made us feel rush to order our food. Our Food order took nearly 45 mins to come and we had to send a plate back as we requested medium steak and it came to us Burnt to a crisp. We found out afterwards it was told to the kitchen wrong, which makes sense as Ben did not write any of our orders down so not surprised it was wrong. My partners side order of vegetables were all disappointing as they were incredibly limp and soggy. We tired to order more drinks and he took one order and as I tried to ask for a drink he walked away ignorong me. It was like they wanted to rush everything so he could go home at end of service. This is a very dissapointing evening After a first visit which was amazing. This particular member of staff needs to learn some manners and not make people feel so rushed. Characterful pub with food. Recently refurbished after a kitchen fire. Now has better service than before and the food seems to have improved. Good selection of beers also. Multiple menu's are too complex and need combining and simplifying. Also can be expensive with some starters overpriced, so have to chose carefully. read more

I have been to visit this restaurant in the past a few times and was always very pleased with the meal and service.How ever my partner and I decided to pop in last week and were so disappointed.The menu had been altered and like many other restaurants their menu no longer seems to cater for the increasing number of people who now are allergic to Dairy Products. We found most of the meals included cheese which is most off putting to people like me. Why have places starting doing this, why can we not have the lovely English food without it being stuffed or covered in cheese. It was also Pie Day and these to had cheese in. Just back home after taking the family for sunday dinner.only been for a drink before but looked really nice so went today.from walking through the door wished id turned around.the female server AMY was badly in need of customer training very abrupt and smart answers to questions,i asked whats the fish like,reply its a fish like in the chippy,whats the childrens roast like,reply its a roast but smaller ? waited about 45 minutes for dinner,one of worst ive had. I asked for well done crispy fish I got a soggy soft fish,wifes sunday dinner was like it was warmed up,roasties like rubber couldn't cut.when asked for kids ice cream,AMY took 25 minutes to get it..then asked for bill waited a bit then the server AMY who was getting it walked past with someones food so I had to pay at the bar.all in all poor service poor food and overpriced would never return or recommend read more
