Once you place your order your worries will fade away though, as you enjoy the view and dine on stellar seafood. The Cuillin Hills Hotel in Portree is one of the nicest hotel experiences we've had in a long time…read more Portree is a quaint little town on the Isle of Skye on the west coast of Scotland. It's some of the most beautiful scenery we've seen. The hotel is as comfortable as you will find in a luxury hotel. The bar and restaurant features stunning views of Portree Bay and the Cuillin mountains. Gary our bartender was a wizard whipping up a number of signature and classic cocktails. He was so friendly and generous to share all kinds of local knowledge about the cocktail/scotch scene in the area. The Talisker distillery is only a few miles away. I had no idea Drambuie was created and marketed in Isle of Skye. It actually says it on the bottle which Gary showed us (photo #10). It makes sense it was created and made in Scotland being a scotch-based liqueur. Of course I had to order a Rusty Nail (photo #3) which Gary was excited I even knew about the very old school cocktail. A Rusty Nail is simply 2 oz. Scotch and 3/4 oz. Drambuie served with a lemon garnish. Its origin dates back to the 1930's and made popular by the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr.) in the 1960's. If you like scotch you'll love a Rusty Nail. Give it a go!! The bar has a "Malt Embassy" with over 130 whiskies (photo #4 & 9). Whatever kind of scotch you're into they have it. The flights are a lot of fun so you can easily taste a wide variety of local whiskies. The design of the hotel is as beautiful as the surrounding landscape. The lounge areas are stunning and very comfortable. What's better than having a lovely local scotch in front of the fire with your beautiful wife celebrating your 25th wedding anniversary (photo #5)? If you ever visit Scotland, Isle of Skye is a must. We highly recommend Portree and the Cuillin Hills Hotel. You need to get there. Salute

We had two excellent bartenders who gave us lots of advice and remembered us throughout our stay. There is a comfortable lounge with a live fire. If I have one suggestion, it is to host a wine and cheese night in the lounge for an hour or so each night. This would be the only way I could think to improve the hotel. The view from the hotel is gorgeous with a perfect scene of the colorful Portree houses. Location is great, about 15 minutes drive from Old Man of Storr. Breakfast is included and very well done. The yogurt had a delicious compote. My husband enjoyed his Scottish breakfast with haggis, blood pudding, and a potato scone. I loved my Eggs Royale with perfectly crispy English muffins topped with smoked salmon and hollandaise. We had dinner at Dulse & Brose one night and we were able to walk there within about 10 minutes, which was appreciated after so much time spent in the car. They offer a variety of complimentary toiletries and others for a small fee, such as a hair straightener, which I thought was thoughtful. They also offer complimentary still and sparkling water, biscuits, tea, coffee, and fruit. We loved that the TV could be easily connected to our phones and stream our shows after a long day exploring the Highlands. The bed was very large and comfortable, although the room itself was relatively small. There was a towel heating rack in the bathroom.

Portree is tiny, so any hotel within the city will have you a 5-minute max walk to anywhere else in the city. Our Premiere Double room was spacious, comfortable, and very tastefully appointed. It felt luxurious and upscale with lots of visual details and amenities for us to enjoy and feel well taken care. We had a great view from our room of the bay in one direction, and the street below in another. Breakfast in the restaurant was plentiful. They brought a continental plate over for the table each morning, which included croissants, yogurt, and fruit, plus you could order from the extensive breakfast menu, which included plenty of vegetarian options. The espresso machine was broken our first morning, but the French press coffee gave me the as-strong-as-I wanted-it-to-be coffee fix I needed. There is no official parking for the hotel, so if you're lucky enough to get one of the spots directly in front of the hotel, it's kind of like winning the lottery. We found it easy to park just up the road (heading out of town) about a block away...no parking limitations allowed us to leave our car there for 2 days. (And, worst case scenario, there's a long-term paid lot [Bayfield] not too far...but we didn't have to use it.) The only quirk was in the spacious and luxurious bathroom...there's no shampoo / conditioner / shower gel /shelf in the shower. There's a small soap shelf, but putting the provided shampoo/conditioner/gel bottles on top of it...well, they wouldn't all fit there, and pressing the dispenser makes it seem like that might break if sitting on top of it...so we had to put those provided items on the floor of the shower to use them. It seems like a basic thing to have a shelf for those in the shower, or wall mounts for them, as they have in almost every other hotel we've ever been to. We loved this hotel, its location, the service, and found it perfect to explore Portree and Skye.

From the moment we walked through the gigantic doors we were greeted with the warmth and hospitality of Scotland's past. The staff at the hotel was exceptional, professional and friendly. The hotel itself is so charming -- the lobby, lounge and library exude elegance and sophistication of Scotland history. Our room was clean, spacious and tastefully, historically decorated and the bed was very comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was bright and clean and a nice size. The grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed a walk to the Invergarry Castle ruins. One of the highlights of our stay was the breathtaking panoramic view from our suite that overlooked the loch. It was simply mesmerizing and peaceful, especially during sunrise and sunset. The hotel's lounge and library were the perfect spots to unwind with a nightcap in front of a roaring fire. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel multiple days and each were excellent and exceeded our expectations in both service, quality and deliciousness. During our stay we did day road trips from the hotel and we always looked forward to returning to relax in the lounge with a drink and reflect on our day's adventures. Remember all though this establishment advertises as a castle hotel, the contenintal breakfast or Full scottish breakfast is included at no charge, like a bed n breakfast. There are Invergarry castle ruins on the property as well as a very cold river nearby in which we spotted children paddling in a floating raft as their guardians were fishing off a boat. There is a beautiful walkway on the dirt path along side the green garden but I don't recommend wheelchair users to roam on this path without supervision...too many holes and bumps. Cable channels are free, you can purchase dinner for an additional 70 sterling pounds, and the fresh breakfast is fulfillingly tasty. The view from the dining room is glorious although the weather changed from windy grey cloud skies to hail storm and then rain and then sunshine. Completely unpredictable, as expected for UK weather. Go for the experience!

I was unsure what that meant at the time of booking. No, Kyle Chalmers was not there when I arrived the first night. I arrived about 12:30 a.m., the ferry landed at Uig around 11 p.m. and I was part of a continuous stream of cars making their way inland, be it to an Isle of Skye destination or something further east. I had put in the late arrival time for the first night when I made the reservation, though was still gently scolded at check-in for it being past the normal hours of desk operation when I arrived. Thankfully, I was not turned away and the desk worker did remind me to be careful driving at night. I later learned someone from the same batch of drivers had driven off the road that night and died. Turned out, the two bookings meant I had to move my things out of the first room after the first night and checkout before checking in again the second day and getting a different room. Both rooms were cozy and the beds were comfortable. Each was equipped with a small bathroom. The curtains could be closed, which I found I needed when I slept as it would get light around 4 a.m. and dusk did not fall until about 11 p.m. or a little later. The breakfasts were delicious each morning. I had a full breakfast and found it to be hearty morning adventure fuel. Workers all around were kind and friendly in their interactions.

There is ample parking on premise for hotel guests and dinner guests. The owners were very gracious and accommodating. As a former hunting lodge, there are rooms upstairs but no lifts. We had breakfasts and dinners here during our stay. Breakfast had self serve yogurts and cereals and hot cooked items to choose from. Hearty appetites can have the Scottish breakfast. There's scrambled eggs and smoke salmon for more modest appetites. We did book reservations and enjoyed a drink at the bar while perusing the menu. Our dinner orders were taken in the bar and when dinner was ready, we were invited to the dining room. Each meal we had were expertly made and presented. It was our reward for all the hiking we did on Skye. If you like scallops, the hand dived Sconser scallops on the starter menu is not to be missed. They came from the waters in front of the hotel! Out food was very good. I had the fish and chips which tasted fresh and was not greasy.
