If you understand the standard bar service situation you will have no issues getting a food or refreshments. If you don't, you may wind up sitting in a booth for a while longer than you expect. Near Karl Johan gate, The Scotsman is touted as a popping Scotch pub and whiskey bar. There are two floors and even patio seating, so it was pretty easy to snag a high top and then order at the bar. On the menu, they list maybe like 5 whiskeys, but they have much more on their shelves. Too bad some of the bartenders I talked to didn't seem to be too knowledge on the selection, but nonetheless at least I was able to settle on one I wanted. The bartenders were more knowledgeable on their beers and they have a few different ones from all over on tap. For food, I really enjoyed their wings, they were by far one of the most tender I've had, with the meat easily coming off the bone. The "hot" sauce was not too hot, so I actually enjoyed it a lot. Came here on my last day in Norway with the team and enjoyed the nice atmosphere and beer that they recommended; however, the table was not clean when we arrived, nor did the waiter/waitress ever come to clean the table. It's a pub - no table service order at the bar. Plenty of beers on tap and by the bottle. Four floors of space - sitting, lounging, gaming, live music - you get the idea. We had to order off a small menu because it was busy but I was very pleased to surprised to wolf down a delicious fish & chips with fresh tartar sauce & salty fries with mushy peas. So we stopped in thinking we could have a drink in a friendly atmosphere. It looks like it would be, but that is just a facade. The bartender smiled and laughed with a Norwegian speaking customer. With us, however, she was condescending and downright rude because we asked a question about a drink on the menu (only the alcohol was listed and we wanted to know what it was mixed with). A valid question, I thought, apparently she didn't agree. Either way, for the cost of alcohol in Norway, at least the service should be polite. Update- the management contacted me and was very polite and apologetic. Apparently it was a stressful night there and I'm happy they are addressing the issue. read more

This place isn't very big on service so don't expect to come here for a real restaurant experience. If you're on a solo European trip from America and just so happen to have a 3-4 hour layover in Oslo on the way to Paris and can't stomach the idea of just sitting in an airport in a foreign country that you never imagined you'd be in then this place is the perfect spot to stop in with your carry on luggage to have a strong beer on the outdoor heated patio and people watch on a busy street (or if you're noticeably one of the only black people in town, it's the perfect place to be watched). I think I actually wanted food but there was really no one in sight looking to take an order. I was actually told to go inside to order a drink from the bar (no seats at the actual bar, I don't recall) to bring back out to the patio. Also because of this reason, I only had one beer while I gathered my location and made a quick plan of what I could walk around and see in the area. As someone else mentioned, the seats are noticeably not very comfortable either *shrugs*. The only real positives to this place are the location for people watching and the fact that they have some interesting beers worth trying. read more

An ok place to get a quick bite to eat and drinks. It's a very informal atmosphere, and like the pubs in Scotland, you go to the counter to place your order. I wasn't very hungry, so I just got the 6 pieces of spicy chicken wings. The sauce was spicy but it had a weird sweet tang at the end which I didn't care for too much. I ordered their pink oak drink (I think that is the name of it). Unfortunately it tasted like pink lemonade and only pink lemonade. I know the gentleman put alcohol in it but it wasn't a very strong drink to begin with. Expect that if you do get service other than placing food on your table for it to not be very personable. If you are looking for a British/Irish pub in the middle of buzzing crowds and tourist routes - The Scotsman is perfect. On a warm day you sit outside watching people passing by. Perfect people watching spot! Due to location, beer is also insanely expensive! NOK 88 for a large lager. Order in the bar. When we were here they had a Rolling Stones pinball machine in the back. It's just your basic Irish pub, although I guess it's supposed to be a Scottish one, judging by the name. I'm sure it's OK to socialize in the evenings with some friends and some beer. I was there around lunch time though with a friend. Got a beer and an expensive sandwich. Well everythig is expensive in Norway. Cannot remember what the sandwich was called but it was the only one on the menu. I cannot remember what it tasted like either. I know why though; it had no taste! Pretty disappointing. It's a big pub. Not a lot of character or ambiance. Gigantic Pubs are not my thing, but I was with a large group of 12 people, so we could have our own area, get loud, and be left alone. It's good for big groups and beer swilling but there are other, cozy spots in Oslo. Staff was friendly and put up with our shenanigans, so that's a big plus for this place. read more

Oslo seems to have a thing for American and British food, with lots of places competing for your money. And as you know, if you are drinking in Oslo, you better have a LOT of money. The Scots Man is conveniently located on Karl Johans Gate, surrounded by shopping in central Oslo. Walking inside, you are greeted by a typical, if surprisingly well lit, pub decorated in all things Scottish. Even the carpet is a giant plaid. They have food, but basically just burgers, wings, and fries. They also have that perennial Scottish favorite, the fried Snickers bar. I ordered an "X Marks the Spot" burger. Ordering is done at the bar, by the way. There aren't servers wandering around taking orders or making sure you have what you need. They initially brought the wrong burger but quickly fixed that. The burger is decent, but not anything to write home about. It is absolutely slathered with burger sauce, so if you don't like burger with your sauce, say something when you order. It came with the oiliest French fries I have ever seen in my life. Seriously. I could have pressed these and met Norway 's oil export quota for a week. So in short, don't go for the food. The drinks though - well what a surprise. Their beer menu reads like a gourmet wine list. Excellent selection. And their Scotch menu is even better. If you fancy a wee dram, and you can't get back to auld reekie to find it, the Scots Man can take care of you. Just remember it is Oslo, so prepare for a night of drink by first hydrating well and then tapping your home equity line of credit. So to sum up, 2 stars for food. 3 stars for atmosphere. 5 stars for drinking. read more
