I admitted to the counselor that I have been intoxicated a few times in my life, and at the end of the session he said "well, I don't think you have a problem"...I was slightly relieved and asked him if he was going to state that in the evaluation and he said no, that he did see an issue. Problem #1: Ultimate contradiction. He then said he thinks I am chemically dependent. CHEMICALLY DEPENDENT. 6 MONTHS OF DEPENDENCY TREATMENT. no. When I asked him how on earth he could think that, he said "well, I think you would benefit from some education. Problem #2: There is a difference between "some" alcohol education, and 6 months of dependency treatment. I thanked him for his time and quickly made an appointment for a second evaluation somewhere else. I took the eval from Olalla to the new place, re-did the tests, and that counselor said no way can I be considered chemically dependent. I am so glad I got the second evaluation. Moral of the story: If you have an alcohol related incident, this place will find you chemically dependent even if you have no history of alcohol abuse in the past.

TL;DR - Manipulative, insensitive, and dangerous. Steer clear…read more (Here's the long version): I saw Lisa Katon via telehealth sessions on and off for about a year during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. I had some long-running mental health concerns that I wanted to address , could finally afford therapy for the first time in my life, and required letters from a mental health practitioner in order to receive an upcoming surgery that I needed. I was assigned to Lisa for therapy by my insurance, who told me that they didn't have anyone else to place me with that was in-network, as the COVID-19 pandemic had caused the mental health industry to be overwhelmed with new patients. After looking into reviews from past patients of her's online, I was concerned about some of the complaints I was seeing from other people, but ultimately felt like even bad therapy might be better for me than no therapy, and decided to attend. After my first session, it became immediately clear that Lisa was not a good fit for being my (or anyone's) therapist. She was insensitive, abrasive, made her political/religious views well known (in ways that were extremely unprofessional) and overall conducted herself in a way that made it difficult for me to believe she had ever been certified to operate as a mental health practitioner. However, as I had been lead to believe that I didn't have any other options for a therapist, I decided to continue our sessions together, and made it known in our second or third appointment that my primary goal from our time together was to receive the mental health letter from her that I needed for my surgery. She agreed that this wouldn't be a problem, but requested that we continue to meet on an ongoing basis for the next year or so before she wrote anything (this period of time is uncommon for a surgical mental health letter, but not unheard of.) We continued our sessions on and off for the better part of a year, during which time she continued to violate what I believe to be the ways in which a therapist (or any person) should conduct themselves. Sometimes this included dismissing the things that I would bring up for our discussions, seeming bored/disinterested in our conversations, and on one occasion literally laughing at me when I explained something serious that I was struggling with - a clear sign that she was not fit to work in her field. It quickly reached the point that I would need to make sure I had a family member or friend available to talk with after our sessions ("therapy for my therapy," I called it) as my time with her would leave me feeling far more frustrated and hopeless than I had before. Regardless, towards the end of our year together, she informed me that we didn't need to continue our sessions, as I had been consistent in stating the need for my upcoming surgery, and that this was reason enough for her to finally write my letter. She confirmed that she would start working on it right away and would be sending it off to my insurance/surgery team shortly. I politely thanked her for her time, and left our final session thinking this would be the last of it. I then was informed a month or two later by my surgeon's office that they had never received a letter from Lisa. I reached out to her to clarify why this was (as I had been lead to believe it should already have been done), and she remarked that she wasn't sure how to bill this service to my insurance. I replied by referring her to my insurance's care coordinator, who frequently facilitates these communications between providers, health teams, etc. and had offered to advise her in any way that she might need. She never responded to my message. After about a month, I reached out to her again - frustrated and worried as my surgery date was now quickly approaching and without the proper documentation (i.e: Lisa's letter), I would likely have to forfeit my surgery day and begin the process over. I again explained to her the severity of the situation, and asked for any clarity that she could give or for any assistance that I could provide. Again, no answer. I truly believe that Lisa, knowing that she had no intention of writing my surgical letters, continued to insist on meeting with me for the better part of a year, in the hopes of continuing to collect payment from me and my insurance until eventually making an excuse for why she couldn't provide a letter that she never had any intention of writing to begin with. My time with Lisa Katon gave me great reservations about therapy, mental health practitioners, and opening up about my emotions in general - something that I had always struggled with and grew increasingly worse at under her care. I don't think she's fit to operate as a mental health practitioner, and I think her behavior borders on misconduct. Please, for your own sake - steer far, far clear of Lisa Katon.

His cash pay rates were very reasonable, which made it easy for me visit him. Dr. Varu asked very direct, succinct questions to diagnose and get to know me. We quickly identified my needs and started a very basic medication regimen. My progress steadily improved under Dr. Varu's care. Within a few weeks I was feeling and living much better. In a few months I felt I was truly normal for the first time. Over almost 5 years of semi-quarterly visits, Dr. Varu has kept an eye on me, asked about my life, shared a bit of his, and even given me some good fatherly advice when I needed it. It's too bad that I've moved out of state. I will miss my visits. (Thanks, doc. I followed your advice and I'm now in the highest paying job I've ever had -- more than double my previous salary!) While Dr. Varu is an excellent listener and he does show great empathy, I feel his strength is getting at root causes using sound medical science. I very much appreciate how he found medication for me that did not leave me feeling dulled or empty or edgy. Yes, I'm sure we could have talked forever about my awful childhood. But just one visit and a skillful prescription is what put me on the right track to health, productivity, and happiness. Thank you, Dr. Varu!
