Lynn was always very disorganized and for whatever reason completely ghosted me, despite a seemingly normal client-therapist relationship. All communication stopped cold. Despite my efforts to reach her (phone calls where I left voicemails, text, and email) I received absolutely zero response (even to this day, several months later). I started worrying that perhaps something happened to her (she is old after all). I eventually called her building (we normally communicate directly), and a colleague confirmed that Lynn was fine and they see her daily. I'm glad to hear she was okay, but that's extremely unprofessional to just ignore someone who is trying to reach you for weeks! I would have just appreciated a heads-up if she had something going on in her life (which she has previously informed me of a couple times when she was a no-show to our remote sessions). A therapist should be reliable and communicate clearly, not knowingly leave people in the dark - that's just unacceptable. To anyone considering her as a therapist just save yourself the headache and go with someone else!

I attended a workshop from Crave Health as a recommendation from my running coach. I was getting…read moreinjured often and hitting walls on long runs. After some quick evaluation, Ashley pointed out that a ton of flaws in my diet. While it was all healthy to begin with, it was low on carbs and not nearly enough calories to sustain my workout load. Most people tend to think that an RD is to help you lose weight, but Crave Health helped me in a whole different way. The plan put together for me was with my heavy workout load in mind without being too disruptive. I was injury free for the next 4 months and got my best time in my last half-marathon. Recently, I've been going to lose fat without necessarily losing weight. Ashley got me a modified plan and kept tabs on my progress during our visits. I have lost 2% body fat (from 19 to 17% and on my way to reach 15% goal). I have not experienced the challenges from another reviewer in scheduling appts. I work late and Crave Health has a couple of days where they take appts until late afternoon. Scheduling has been easy over email. Check your insurance and you might find out a few visits are covered in your plan. I do recommend Crave health and I'm still a client.

Marlon has helped make my husband a better spouse and me a better wife. For years my husband and I…read morestruggled to communicate, get along, and care for each other (and our marriage). We have been married for 9 years and it has been a challenge sometimes to even be in the same room together. Throughout our marriage my husband and I have been to several therapists. During our first meeting with the first of many therapists, Judy Ford, she insisted that I climb onto my husband's lap and sit there for awhile. So awkward and not even close to what we needed to learn to communicate. Her advice to my husband was "If she doesn't need to know, don't tell her." That damaged our marriage for quite some time. She is a cross-section of the poor quality of therapy we have encountered through the years. During our first (and last) meeting with a male therapist, he asked my husband "Do you keep it in your pants?" My husband said "Yes" and then the therapist looked at me as if to ask "What's the issue then??" After that I refused to see a male therapist again (until we found Marlon). For years my husband and I desperately needed help but we did not see a therapist again because we had so many bad experiences with therapists in the past. Then I saw Marlon Familton speak at an evening event for the toddler/parent education group I was part of. He seemed so genuine, educated, confident, and passionate about his work. I took a chance and scheduled a couples counseling appointment with him. At that point in our marriage, my husband and I would sometimes go two or more weeks without speaking to each other despite living under the same roof. It was an awful way to live. Marlon was so warm and welcoming during our first meeting with him. He knew how to help us each feel safe and comfortable discussing some very private, difficult, and sometimes embarrassing things. He did not judge us. He did not take sides. He did not tell us we were wrong for feeling the way we did. With absolute expertise and professionalism, he guided us to discover things about ourselves, each other, and our relationship that we didn't realize were contributing to a never ending cycle of fighting and dysfunction between us. He got us talking...to each other. We had quite a bit of old baggage we needed to work through in order to get to a place where we could move forward. Marlon offered us a clear path to help resolve conflict. During our counseling sessions, I have often felt that Marlon was reading a transcript in my head when he has tried to help my husband understand how I was feeling about something. He is attentive, present, empathetic, and so compassionate. I feel that he truly cares about our well-being. He is very down-to-earth and talks with you clearly, offering practical strategies to draw on when working through conflict. Marlon has been so accommodating with our tough schedule. Having three young children at home, the only time we could ever get out of the house together was after they were in bed, which is after 8pm. Marlon would meet with us late at night for long sessions to maximize our time together and help us really dig into the important stuff. After our sessions he would sometimes email us to continue the conversation and make sure that things were going well once we left his office. Throughout the years we have revisited Marlon when we felt our communication was getting rusty and were struggling to work out an issue on our own. After sometimes only a session with Marlon, we were back on track and working together again. I love Marlon's online scheduling system. I log onto his website to schedule an appointment myself instead of calling and leaving messages to try to make an appointment. I have such great respect, admiration, and gratitude for Marlon and his work ethic. He is a pleasure to work with and I could not offer him a higher recommendation. Initially, I went to her for help in dealing with a family problem after my elderly father died. In addition to the emotion pain, I was dealing with a lot of physical pain for a long time. I find her advice very helpful. I can't imagine how I must have burdened my husband and my friends with all these seemingly small problems. All these "small" problems add up and they go on and on if left to fester. The emotional state affects the physical state and vice versa. On the outside, I looked like a normal, happy individual, but on the inside I felt like a failure living in my own hell. I am 66 years old, retired and living on a tight but workable budget. I had such heartbreak in the last few years that was almost unbearable along with two surgeries and car accident. Dr. Skewis has been wonderful in helping me maintain a balance in life without sacrificing my dignity or compromising family relationships. Her advice keeps me in the middle, assertive, rather than passive/aggressive, a common behavior that leads to disaster. She wasn't the first therapist I've seen, but certainly the one I need now.

I lasted one day at THIRA before I knew it wasn't the right program for me. Maybe some people need…read moremore time to make an informative decision but I knew almost immediately that THIRA was not a good fit and had some major red flags. For reference, I was in the Adult PHP ED cohort despite not having an ED. During my intake, I mentioned low self-esteem and previous disordered eating behaviors from when I was younger so I guess they thought it made sense and I agreed to it. I don't know how different the MH cohort is but according to them it's very similar. The ED side just gets a dietician, more meals covered, and a few different groups. To be fair, everyone at THIRA was generally nice. My issue is the lack of training and experience among the (very young) staff, the lack of individualized care, and the rules that seem more about control than about therapy. Nearly all the mental health "technicians" looked no more than 22. You can tell that none of them have actually received more than maybe a week of THIRA-sponsored training, or at best went to undergrad for general psychology. When the individual teaching a skills group mentions that they "didn't even know what DBT was until they started working there," that's a red flag. I'm a grown woman in my thirties, yet I could not even take a piss without being supervised by a some kid. It's dehumanizing. I could not do anything without permission unless I advance up their "level system" which is very reminiscent of those WWASPS programs that are notoriously abusive. Much of THIRA reminded me of that system actually and I'm speaking from experience as I was in one as a minor. It's the reason I struggle so much internally today which led me to seek out a DBT-based program in the first place. (Watch the new Netflix documentary The Program for some more insight into that industry). THIRA obviously didn't match that level of abuse but it was a bit too close for comfort, especially with the unnecessary rules, structure, and unqualified staff. I wasn't about to stick around and find out what else this program had in common with those ones, and I'm genuinely concerned for the teen and residential side of THIRA where they can't leave as easily as I did. The individual care I received compared to what I was told I would get was not aligned. "Therapy" was supposed to be an hour. It was maybe 30 minutes. I explained some of my reasons for seeking out treatment and while my therapist seemed caring, she only took notes and we did no actual therapeutic work. Instead the session was ended early and I was scurried off back to group (which is just worksheets and informal discussion with the "technicians"). My therapist was a 25 yo with a new social work degree. She seemed nice and I think she'd be great for the teen cohorts or very young adults. But I've been in therapy my entire adult life exclusively with psychologists, so this just wasn't sufficient for me. I know she was being supervised but when I asked if I could work with anyone with at the doctorate-level there was hesitation. Eventually they did work that out but by then I had already decided it was not a good fit. My psychiatrist was an actual MD which was refreshing because at that point I was expecting to just get a nurse practitioner. Unfortunately I still ran into some issues. I was told my appointment with her was supposed to be 90 minutes but again it was only 30. I explained my TRD and that I have tried several psychiatric medications throughout my life. The biggest reason I enrolled at THIRA is because my depression had gotten so bad that I recently ODed on my psychiatric medication which landed me in the ICU. I explained this to her and that through this experience it was discovered that my years of SSRI use led to medication-induced psychosis so I had to come off of them. Her response? To diagnose me with depression with psychosis (despite the psychosis being from SSRIs and this diagnosis previously being rescinded) and the suggestion to try a new medication. All within 30 minutes of meeting. I was disappointed to say the least. I expressed my concerns to the program staff after that first day and they did admittedly try to help a little by switching me over to the MH cohort and assigning me to a psychologist. Ultimately, it just wasn't enough to convince me to stay. Despite being in the program for only ONE day, they follow a strict policy of charging you out-of-pocket for three days after. So this program is costing me thousands of dollars for one ineffective day of treatment and to essentially be left re-traumatized by the system and even more hopeless about getting the care I need than I was before. My recommendation? Buy the DBT Skills Training Handouts and Worksheets by Linehan for under $40 on Amazon (which THIRA will charge you $55 for if you lose) and seek out an individual DBT therapist to help you work through the book on a personalized-level. You'll save money and keep your sanity.

During labor, we did what we practiced and the mother later reported that this was the most helpful tool for managing the intensity. When a complication arose in labor, there was not a lot of time and several fast decisions had to be made. Having Nancy there as a trusted resource made all the difference. All it took were a few adamant nods of approval from Nancy to help me feel like the right decisions were being made. This helped avoid critical time delays since I normally would have wanted to spend more time to understand what was going on in more depth before making any decisions.
