After our Valentine's Day dinner date, my new boyfriend brought me to The Sound Room to enjoy live jazz music. I've never heard of this place and wasn't aware it was in Oakland. The front serves as a small cafe, and the backroom is the performance room. It's a small, intimate venue, and we watched Oakland-based soul & jazz singer Lilan Kane perform. It was a very enjoyable performance, and the acoustics were lovely. The staff were also very friendly and accommodating. A sweet, romantic spot to enjoy an evening out. Thanks Sound Room!

A Hidden Gem in the City! I didn't know what to expect when I showed up to The Sound Room on a Friday night. I had bought tickets to see a friend's show, and only just learned that the venue has been in this location for a few years now -- not brand new, but a great discovery for me! Doors opened at 6:30, and we were warmly greeted by a lovely woman (possibly the owner). She was chatting with guests about the dinner options while I checked out the menu. I ordered the Mushroom "Scallops" with coconut rice and green veggies -- super flavorful, fresh, and priced just right. I also had a glass of white wine that paired perfectly. After ordering, I headed to the back where a friendly staff member checked tickets and walked me to my assigned seat. The seating is well-organized with table numbers and labeled chairs (A, B, C, etc.). Very smooth process and excellent service all around. By around 7:30 or 8, the show began -- but honestly, even before that, I was already impressed. The ambiance is intimate and beautiful, the sound system is top-notch, and the lighting really sets the mood. Plenty of space to move around comfortably, even when it's full. If you're looking for a chill night with live music, delicious food, and a cozy vibe -- this is your spot. I'll definitely be coming back for another show soon!

Would be a lot more comfortable if I could feel some air circulating. Only air movement right now is the continuous coughing by the #3 person at this 4-top where we reserved two seats. If you're not comfortable with the idea of sharing a very small table with someone who coughs continually (never covering her mouth), then you might consider taking all four seats. (Or making other plans.) Air system started blowing, quietly bringing cool air into into the room in during the final song of a two hour show. That was a relief after nearly two hours of stage lights and maybe 100 warm bodies. Excellent talent. Good food and drink.

    Chloe Jean - phenomenal performance!

My first time at The Sound Room. I went for my birthday as I LOVE jazz and live bands. I loved the vibe here. Everyone came to listen to good music. But seemed like most of the people there were regulars and for the most part knew each other. This is a non-profit organization supporting local bay area artists. However, the audience was not very diverse. As a Black American, I couldn't help but notice there were fewer than 10 Black people in the room, including the singer (we actually counted about 8). We arrived just at 7:30 pm when the show started, so we didn't try the food. But there was a separate area near the entrance where you could order and pick up your food and beverages and bring to your table. We ordered a bottle of rose that was pretty good, and reasonably priced. There was no table service, which was fine considering what you got with the cover charge, which was 3 hours of live performance. We had the pleasure of listening to Chloe Jean who was phenomenal. If all the artists are of her caliber, I'll definitely go back again and again. If you don't mind this place not being very diverse, I highly recommend.

They weee here to perform songs from their new album Grand Life, but they sang their classics as well. Everyone got into 'All My People' when the opening beat started the song. I sat at table 11. It was a good seat. I had a great view of the stage. For dinner, I did a repeat and had scallops & Risotto. Second concert in July was Avery Sunshine. Wow, does this lady have a voice. She was quite a ways from the mic & the audience could still hear her belt out them runs and notes. I'll admit, her songs were not in my rotation on my Apple Music and I confused her with Sunshine Anderson. Two totally different singers. Avery is liken to Patti LaBelle, Aretha. Yes, she has a clear powerful voice and she's an entertainer. She plays piano, her husband the guitar, and her son on the drums. Wow so much musical talent in one family. She sang some gospel and all of us were in Cherch on a Friday night. I got early priority seating for the 7:30om show. I was at table #6, a first for me. I sat with 3 other ladies one was a solo traveler like myself. Just getting up and going places. No FOMO here. I come from the 559 and the Amtrak gets me here. The crew at Yoshi's recognize me as a regular and so does the conductor. Even the hotel staff. I love Oakland or The Town as they say around here. See you some more on Yelp 2026

And unlike the SF Mortified event I attended last month where most seats were reserved, this one seemed to offer ample seating first come first served, as well as a lovely outdoor courtyard with even more seating. Sound and lighting were ideal. The guest band, Hot and Dangerous, were hilarious and used lots of unconventional instruments along with catchy and comical lyrics, in between journal readings. They did amazing on stage, even though I missed the house band I saw at the previous show. There were bars on both levels, and just a small line at the downstairs bar before the event started. An hour in, there was no line or waiting at all. I tried one of their cocktail specials, the new parish punch, and absolutely loved it, strong and fruity with just a hint of spice, seems like they make good drinks here. Also, we arrived when the doors opened, an hour before showtime, and there was plenty of parking available just a block away.

After I got there and made my way up to the bar, I noticed that one of the other patrons had a drink menu with prices. So I asked to borrow it thinking that it was his own. Expected to feel like we'd paid too much, but actually really enjoyed not waiting in a long line, getting a snack (pizza on this night), grabbing a few drinks and having comfy sofas to lounge on before going to find our seats. We also had access to a roped off area near the large bar just at the back of the general admission floor area, which was raised and where we had a clear view to the stage. We were also treated very well as we went back and forth from the lounge room to our seats, to the viewing area, etc. I'd do it again in a second. The only thing is I wish they'd announce what the snacks were going to be ahead of time. I feel like that could be easy to do and would be in line with their already good service. The concert was being shown in the Telegraph Room, too.
