I am rating this Excellent, because it truly was! Pablo was an EXCEPTIONAL guide. Very knowledgeable, passionate, energetic, and fun. Throughout the tour, he shared his knowledge about Puerto Rico and its history, and was especially helpful in getting a greater understanding of the rest of Puerto Rico, outside of San Juan. Sometimes we forget it is not just San Juan!! We LOVED his use of a very effective "job aid"....a children's coloring book. Creative, and so good to see the maps, the examples of the Indians hoeing the ground, and other very simple illustrations to reinforce his points. He had a compassionate view of the history of the people of Puerto Rico, and how they all contributed to today's society.
Now, all this said, while the food we sampled was excellent, I would have expected a bit more. We have done food tours in the past, and felt this was a little light. We are NOT marking down our review because of our perception, however, it is important to share this. I would say this was maybe 80% History and 20% Food....and the history part was excellent. Just want to share that. The web site says try up to 10 foods. If you count the coffee and the rum drink, that brought us up to 7. Maybe the fresh fish was in the garbanzo dish at the last stop? The fresh meat in the Mofongo with Chicken and Garlic sauce? I was thinking the last "final sit down spot" might have provided a main course, or more than what was served. STILL....Pablo shared great stories about the history of the plants, the cooking and recipes, and that was fantastic.
The web site states:
You will taste up to 10 different Puerto Rican delicacies throughout the various stops. Sample the best artisan coffee in town, try traditional fresh bread, taste the most delicious locally sourced meat and produce on the island, eat fresh-caught local fish, enjoy a homemade ice cream pop made from all natural ingredients. We will end with a final sit-down stop for delicious fare prepared especially for our Spoon foodies. A refreshing rum cocktail will be paired with your meal.
Highly recommend this, Pablo was great, history was presented very effectively, and would have liked more robust food! read more
