Lowndes is located right downtown Charleston by Hampton Park so you don't have to deal with the narrow streets and high traffic. There is parking on the premises and plenty on the street. Lowndes also has connections with a ton of vendors (photographers, draping, florists, caterers, etc) that they can recommend. Highly recommend for how lovely everything is and how great and knowledgeable the staff is. Weddings here are always seamless. Since we arrived late in the day, we opted not to do the trolly tour, but instead, toured the gift shop, sampled all the hot and cold teas (I think there were 12 samples), and took the 15 minute FREE factory tour. The teas? delicious! The tour? Super educational! It was great learning how tea grows, harvested, and processed. Whether you're a tea drinker or not, you will love stopping here. And if you're not in a rush, go sit in a rocker under the trees, or at one of the many picnic tables. Enjoy the fresh air and the sound of the birds. You won't be disappointed!

I visited the Charleston Tea Garden with a large group last weekend, when I was visiting Charleston…read morefor a birthday celebration for a friend. I'm not sure if it's the only tea plantation in America or just the oldest (I haven't been able to figure it out on Google either), but it's certainly a unique experience - tea grown in the United States! When you visit, there are several different things you can do. They offer a Factory Tour (free), where you walk past windows looking onto the factory floor and stopping at different TVs where a video about the history of the Charleston Tea Garden is played in portions at each stop/TV. There's also a trolley tour you can book. The trolley tour is a narrated tour through the tea fields, including a stop at the greenhouse. The offer a Tea Bar in their gift shop, where you can sample hot and iced teas made from their teas and shop for other souvenirs and gifts. It's a really unique experience, and I learned a lot. For example, I didn't realize that green, black, white, and Rooibos teas all come from the same leaves/plant (Camellia sinensis) - the differences come from the part of the leaf (white tea is made from young leaves) or the processing of the leaves (green tea comes from unoxidized leaves, while black tea leaves are fully oxidized)! But the experience is pretty dated - the factory tour in particular! The videos were really dated and hard to hear with some many people in the area where the videos played. And one TV - the last one - just stopped playing the video, so we missed the end of the "tour." The trolley tour was interesting but would probably be better enjoyed in the spring or summer when things are more lush and green. It was a little gray and dry in the winter. It's worth a stop if you're in the area and want to learn about tea (some parts of the experience are free, so you can just pop in for a tea tasting and a sit on the rocking chairs on their porch), but I wouldn't say you need to go out of your way to visit unless you're going to be in the area.

There's a water refill station inside and a great restroom with sinks available indoor and out of the actual restroom. I noticed some meeting places as well with transparent walls good for community gatherings. Some notable places I've seen are The Sanctuary, DandiLion wax studio, and the Charleston Wellness Studio. Upon reading another Yelp review I loved they offer a venue space as well which would be great for showers or weddings perhaps! Something to look into. Another wonderful addition to the Schoolhouse is the picturesque garden next door. Enjoyed the flowers and greenery before embarking on my next task. Very peaceful space.

At any rate, we were looking for a spot to hold our mom's 70th birthday surprise party. We were struggling with finding availability on a Saturday afternoon - church reception halls were booked, other venues were booked, and then other venues just wanted to charge too much for a birthday party (charging us Charleston wedding prices!!). The Schoolhouse actually did not come up in our search, but was recommended to my sister. My sister immediately contacted the Schoolhouse to check availability. They have a couple different rooms that are rentable, depending on size. We didn't need anything too big, so we were able to rent out the Music Room. Small room good for 30-40 people. They supply the chairs/tables with the rental. On the day of, Heather was there to meet us, and gave me her number in case we had any questions. I will say, the only issue was that there was another group that had a function going on in the next room and they had come in and taken one of our tables. So we had to take it back! Not a big issue, since Heather took charge, but it just seems like people don't understand that multiple events can go on. That is the biggest issue that I see with this space, is that people don't understand that multiple events can go on. Obviously, if you are the one renting it, then you know it, but your guests do not. So as we were setting up, we had the doors open so that we could bring stuff in from the cars. Well there were some random people that just walked into and through our room. Do you not see us setting up? Then eventually two people came in and were on the floor giving massages (what in the world??) - not sure if they were tenants or from the other party. Again, do you not see us setting up? We told them we had this space reserved, and they were willing to leave. Then I guess the party next door did not bring enough supplies, coming in and asking us for cups. No, we bought these for our party. I wouldn't say this is a fault to the event center, but a fault to guests/other people renting, to give other people common courtesy. We did end up closing all doors once we got everything inside from all of the cars, and had no other issues. My only suggestion would be to maybe have signs in place by the rental facility showing that "this room is privately reserved today, please do not enter". During the actual party with the room filled, it did get very warm. It was at least a cool night so that we opened the door to the outside to let cool air in. I'm not sure if we knew how to adjust the temperature or if we could adjust it, but that was our means of just letting the building be and letting cool air in. Also, there is ample parking in front and in back of the building. So your guests do not have to worry about having to park and walk or to pay for parking. Overall, I would definitely recommend this space for a party - reasonably priced, with a great setup on how much space you actually need.

Our friends lined up a shrimp boil and hired a beer truck for outside and bartenders for inside. It was pretty crowded with the amount of people they invited so it was very loud inside. I would have suggested some outside heaters because it was a chilly night. This was a fun night but a little bit of a drive from downtown Charleston. We were happy we took an Uber.

On the property I believe there was five houses (I could be wrong) but there was quite a few. There was a huge pond outside the main house that we kayaked in, and other ponds throughout the property that you could go fishing on. The landscape is beautiful very well maintained. There was a service provided with a golf cart helping transport the bridal party to the reception and it was greatly appreciated. It was very surprisingly how small the main house was when it came to the bedroom sizes, but overall, the venue is incredible!
