By chance we swung in here on a cold Saturday afternoon to grab a bite to eat for lunch when we were in the area earlier this year. The front bar is what I grew up being accustomed to as far as country pubs are supposed to be. Basic watering holes for (mostly) the old boys to come in and sink a few quiet ones, not talk too much and maybe listen to some TripleM-esque good ol' Aussie rock and roll. It's a simple life and having lived it in a previous life, I can say it kicks *rse. But the dining area of the Oakbank has come alive lately, with a well-reputed 'all-you-can-eat' ribs night held every Tuesday. For those of you who are paying attention, no we did not get all you can eat ribs. But they do offer beef ribs on the menu as a regular mains item, so that is what I went with. I was not disappointed. If I have some tasty, juicy slow-cooked meat and a dark beer in front of me, a fire or some decent heating and my missus with me, I'm in winter bliss mode. Good service at a good rate, with a warm country vibe. Pretty simple stuff and you get it in spades here at the Oakbank. I am trying desperately to get up there on a Tuesday to check out their signature evening. I will update accordingly if I ever make it. Give it a shot.

Also they have dessert buffet which are delicious. Last time I went there with some friends on a Sunday. Beautiful venue. Many people were there and there was a birthday party as well. The food was delicious and I wish I could eat more. My favorite food on that day was plum glazed pork chops. They had roasts, pickles, fried food, samosas and rice and curry and many more. The waiters are very friendly and they will come and pick up the used plates and cutleries. Not surprisingly, they also have German beer available, though I should point out that the German Beer is only from a single brewery, and also seems to be much more crafty than the ones at the other pubs. Still, this is a pretty cool pub with a great atmosphere, and the staff are really nice as well.

We didn't have a car and didn't want to Uber separately to various cellar doors/vineyards so stopping here was a nice alternative. We got to try a bunch of local wines and also learn about the region. The tasting was only 5 Australian dollars per person...can't beat that!! Later in the day, also walked into the hahndorf inn pub part for a drink and quick bite before catching the metro bus back to the city. Split a beer tasting flight with my husband and the pretzel/2 dips appetizer. Delicious pretzel with a red pepper dip and then some type of rocket/bean dip. The flight showcased 4 classic German beers. They were mostly light, crisp, and refreshing with the exception of a darker ale. Nice spot to grab a beer and bite to eat if you like German pub fare.

Actually I wanted to go to Melbourne for a week, but I was too busy. Amble Bed and Breakfast in Hahndorf did the trick. I wouldn't usually pay $200 for an overnight stay, but I wouldn't usually stay in a bed and breakfast either so...there you go. Amble was really lovely, and I wasn't let down in any respect. One of the cleaners did accidentally walk in while I was changing at five minutes to checkout time, but that was more of a humorous incident than a let-down. The property is really beautiful. The couple who run the place have made a beautiful garden that surrounds the three separate little cottages, which back onto a big field with horses and beautiful trees. We stayed in the Amble Wren Cottage which was excellent. DVDs, free wireless, a television, miniature kitchen, sweet green oak tree wall-paper, cosy lighting, a heater and a spa. We didn't leave except to demolish all of Hahndorf's sausages and beers, stumble back and fall into the spa. Which, while we're on the topic, looked out onto a beautiful view of the countryside. The owners were very friendly but not invasive (well except for that one accident), the wifi was reliable and I got to watch Me, Myself & Irene in bed while drinking champagne. What more could you ask for? Oh, and complementary locally sourced breakfast ingredients - eggs, sausage, bacon and OJ. And fancy chocolates.

You can choose between three cottages, Wren, Over and Fern, each beautiful and stylish in their own unique way. All the cottages have a spa, come with breakfast provisions, chocolates. I figure $200 isn't really that bad, especially when your getting breakfast and free wifi, and parking isn't a prob. I've gotten cheap stays elsewhere where I've ended up having to spend heaps on extras.

I think that a lot of people drive past on their way to wineries, but they should really stop for a coffee. It is just the cutest cottage. A few different rooms and you will find the café part in the middle room. What I really love about this place is all the little hidden room dining areas. There are range of take away options for lunch or dinner for the family. Some super tasty looking stews, pasta and salads. Wow! All decently priced and a great healthy alternative then going out for takeaway. I look forward to return to eat some lunch. On this visit my guest and I tried the Lemon Polenta and the Pecan cake. Both were very moist, full of flavour, and not too sweet. Which is perfect by my books. The coffee is a strong and robust. Lovely blend and great barista. You couldn't have asked for anything better on a cold rainy day! I think I might become a regular as a resident of the Hills! I am looking forward to warming up near their open fireplace.

So far I've only had coffee, but based on the experience of our group the overall customer experience is great! Our coffees (and one iced chocolate) came out really promptly and were top notch (and very affordable somehow). We opted to sit out the back, a great choice for a bright, warm hills Autumn morning. It feels like being out the back of my Nanna's house (retro table and all) only no one is yelling at me through the back window about the football scores.. which is good I guess, for a cafe anyway.
