Built around a large, early 19th Century house, rooms in the old house have traditional decor (some with 4-poster beds) whereas most of the rooms (a mix of doubles and twins) are in a modern annex, and are laid out with standard modern hotel layouts. These have TV, bathrooms with baths and showers, tea/coffee making facilities and controllable heating and air-conditioning. The decor is a little dated but in good condition. Our room was clean, and had comfortable, if slightly springy, beds. The shower was excellent and there was always plenty of hot water. There's a restaurant and function room in the newer extension and a comfortable bar located in the original house. There's a small Spa suite, which we didn't use. But we had dinner as part of a group which was perfectly good; breakfast was a buffet, with a reasonable selection of cereals, strong coffee, and (for a buffet) a good quality cooked breakfast (excellent mushrooms and sunny-side fried eggs). Staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall, for the price, I'd happily stay here again. The only downsides were that the car park is small, and filled up quickly (a few of our party had to park off-site a short distance away); and although the WiFi speed was reasonable (35 Mbps), the signal kept dropping in and out in our room.

Our server, Luke, was ridiculously polite to the point where it almost made me feel awkward -- I wanted to tell him "lighten up, we're cool!" Decor is classy and attractive. They have a two-or three-course lunch special (I can't remember exactly what the price is, but it's a great deal). Location is about 1/2 mile from train station. I walked to train station to catch the Stonehenge tour. Next day walked through quaint town to Salisbury Cathedral (Magna Carta) and museum. If you have a good pair of walking shoes, you don't need to rent a car if you stay here. Met other travelers from the States during breakfast as well. Would stay here again, hands down. I loved the bathroom - the skylight really brightened up the space. It was surprisingly quiet even though all the rooms are in close proximity. Our host explained that there would be a continental breakfast in the morning, and if we wanted something hot, we needed to make our selection the night before, so we each ordered the Full English Vegetarian Breakfast. Breakfast in the morning was efficient and hearty. The only downfall is that parking is very tight. We had to pull into the driveway because we weren't permitted to park on the street. This meant we were blocking in other cars, and we were blocked in ourselves when the last guests arrived. Luckily, no one needed to leave in a hurry!

Although the music was right in line with my tastes, we were really hoping for a good night's sleep since we had to be on the road at 7AM, but sleep wasn't to be had since the music continued until midnight. I pulled my ear plugs out of my bag and turned on a noise machine, but even that wasn't enough to block out the pounding bass. Honestly, the hotel should not have even rented room we were in on that date considering the noise below. If we had stayed at this hotel on a different night, I think our experience would have been much better - it's clean, pretty, and convenient to the cathedral and other sites. The staff was very friendly and gave us bagged lunches since we were checking out before breakfast. I wish I could leave a better review, but since the primary purpose of a hotel is to provide sleeping accommodations and we weren't able to get much sleep, two stars it is.

The booking was not made and the morning manager had to scramble to try and get a cab to come. We caught our train with only one minute to spare. It was very stressful. We had numerous issues with the taxi drivers in the town actually, and sadly, would not return to Winchester because of this issue within the town itself.

I had a lovely parsnip soup followed by very tasty lamb, and my wife had mozzarella and tomato starter followed by sea bass. Apart from the tomato starter (which used ordinary tasteless english salad tomatoes instead of proper Italian plum ones) the food was very tasty and we followed it with a 'Can't decide' - 5 mini portions of different deserts. This is a very well kept house as you can see from the photographs, but you have to see it in real life to really appreciate the time and effort that they have put into making their guest feel welcome. The atmosphere is both friendly and helpful to both foreign guests and local business customers alike. This is what I would call a guest house and a bit more on top. Absolutely everything has been thought of!
