Nice open fire and really relaxed lighting in the evening. They could do with a few more real ales on tap in my opinion but there's enough to satisfy. Old Speckled Hen is one of my favourites anyway. Plenty of nice New World wines available. I had the barbecue ribs when I ate there and they were fantastic. Just the right amount and really nice and tender.

What a shame! This place has had a makeover over the last few years. It used to be one of my…read morefavourite pubs and I hadn't used it for ages until last night. Regret going there. Cannot recommend the food. My wife and friend had Lamb shanks, which were nice but the veg were done to death and served plated up! New potatoes cremated! My mates' steak was good but chips 'orrible! As for my Linguine Bolognese, or perhaps I should say my pasta and basic mince, was sooooooo disappointing. Very dry and lacked any sauce, so my friend shared her gravy with me! Nice of her, but not quite the same is it? No taste at all and so limited on Grana Pedano cheese. Wish I'd had the cheese-boardbut not at £8!!!! As for the desserts..little choice. My friend settled for Jam Roly Poly and Custard. Her opinion.terrible. Was stale and tasteless. Could have had better in a Transport Cafe'. Will give it the 2 star as it sold Doombar bitter, which is always nice.

I haven't been back to England in 9 years and I couldn't wait to come back and eat here. From the…read moreminute you walk in you just feel so cosy and at home. It is absolutely beautiful and traditional inside with all the wooden beams etc. We were greeted quickly and sat right in the back by the lovely wood burning fireplace. The menu is amazing and has so many options, it even has a lot of options for vegans which surprised me but it's very good. To start I had the tiger prawns and garlic bread, Both were extremely good. For mains I had the special which was a fish pie and it was hands down one of the best things I have ever eaten. I now dream about this pie and want to fly back just to eat it. For pudding I had apple and sultana crumble which to be honest I didn't like the crumble part, it was too sweet. The service here was very friendly and helpful but at times a little slow, which I didn't mind but could be frustrating to others. I would highly recommend this pub to eat at, the food still doesn't disappoint many years later! Definitely a nice place for socializing too as it is nice and quiet inside so you can actually have a conversation at dinner which is something I always struggle to find nowadays.

I could not recommend the pasta dishes, however. Drab and wishy washy. Drinks can be a little expensive. John Green Ifnm writer 15/10/11 Welljust shows you how things can change!! Returned with the same friends and had a disappointing evening. Gammon done to death, egg rock hard and shrivelled. BBQ chicken that was more cremated than BBQ'd and salad poor standard. However, my lady friend said that the Lasagne was really nice. We must say that the chips were proper and tasty., The coffee was excellent. One star only because of the Christmas Tree was pretty!!! Bit early.
