The 53rd floor on the Sky Tower for after dinner drinks was perfect. We didn't realize there was a restaurant here and hour from 9:00 until 11 o'clock. I ordered a green haze gin drink and my husband a kamote with coconut rum calimara , Pichard and pineapple juice. Very comfortable seating & service was impeccable. Of course we were wowed by the views as it became dark Auckland lit up. We're not rotating, The menu is a vegetarian course meal. After 9 it becomes a club. read more

Gordon is supposed to be amazing but the food they served me was truly questionable. I paid a $100 for food I could have gotten better at a diner for $20. For those out there who love their cheap greasy BURNT french toast then please try The Sugar Club's Saturday brunch. The guest I was dining with ordered Seared Tuna in Truffle Oil. I haven't never smelt just a bad waft of truffle smell across the table in my life. Sure the dish looked nice and was presented well, there really is no reason to drown fish in oil and then smother. Cocktails were much nicer. The bar tenders could have gone a little lighter on the alcohol to mixer ratios. The Wahine was incredibly sweet, bordering drinking syrup and The Beautiful Islands was pretty much straight rum in a nice glass with an orange peel. read more

I came here on a weeknight just after the sunset. The bar area was quiet but quickly filled as the night went on. Nothing beats grabbing a few drinks with an amazing view of the city. I'm sure if you come early enough, you would be able to see people doing the skywalk and skyjump since it was right in front of the window. Nutty Bison - zubrowka, cointreau, frangelico, lime, bitters. Zubrowka is a bison grass vodka and everything else just add to the nutty finish. Very interested and tickled my taste buds. Odalisque - cachaca, jasmine, elderflower, lime. I don't see cachaca very often so I just had to try it. It is a spirit distilled from sugarcane. Very light and refreshing. Like many, we had high hopes for The Sugar Club. It is in prime location and headed by a famous chef. Normally the prices are sky-high (like it's location) being $90 for 3 dishes, so we only made the plunge when Restaurant Month came around and the menu was up for $59 for 3 dishes + 2 small tasters. Our favourite dish was the Crayfish linguine, which was bold in flavour and delicious. Other dishes were all fairly underwhelming. The Beef Pesto (Peter Gordon classic) was much too salty. Desserts were also disappointing - the chocolate dessert was surprisingly one of the worst presentations I may have ever seen. Service was attentive but there were a few mishaps like collecting plates over our heads (eeek). The perks of dining there are the complimentary visit to the Observation level and free valet parking. While the view was amazing during dinner, I don't think I will be back. read more

The sugar club is more suitable to be a high end bar than a fine dining restaurant. Having said that, I thought the food here was good. The portions are small, but enough and didn't make me feel like I overate. Views from up here are second to none. It can be enjoyed on a good day or bad, depending on your mood, and there is a very comprehensive drinks list to go with it =). This place can get quite noisy when it fills up so if you want a nice quite place for a chat or business meeting I wouldn't recommend it. Price wise I think it is quite steep, but I guess you are paying partly for the views and service as well. Overall this is a good place to go if you want to impress, but for good food and atmosphere, you cab find better. read more

The Sugar Club is actually kinda cool.... Not as pretence and snobby as some people think. Peter Gordon does something different here. Firstly its on the highest floor of the Sky Tower, out of all the restaurants. Already been twice for dinner I thought i'd shout the girls a yummy birthday lunch. Secondly, its no ordinary menu. The meals are smaller portions, like a sharing plate or tapas but its all for you. From the photos below are a mix of the lunch and dinner menu items, however the menu changes with season, and this is why some of the photos aren't named. There are set prices, with two dishes being $56, three dishes being $70 etc, however you can mix and match and have any of those dishes mains or desserts. You will be surprised at the portion sizes. For me I ordered 2 dishes - the day boat fish and one dessert, but I recommend ordering sides to share. I've tried the watermelon & Feta...sounds like an odd combo but its actually quite refreshing and works in a weird way. The miso Kumara is delicious, and you can't go without the duck fat roasties. After visiting twice for dinner and once for lunch, the food is quite outstanding. Everything is displayed beautifully and cooked to a good degree. The only dish I would avoid is the Spiney Crayfish and Linguine, as it was far too cheesy and could just use some adjustments. Nb: If you all order different desserts, you can all try a spoonful of each others. We found the service of the Sugar Club superb,food was fantastic and the view was to die for not to mention the cool and hip feel without trying to hard to achieve this. We had seen a few other reviews going on about the portion size of meals being too small, well found the staff up front about this and even recommending that I look at 3-4 courses not including dessert (yes I am more of the husky side of man size) and found by the third course I was pleasantly satisfied. The view was perfect and was great to see Auckland fully lit up on a beautiful clear night. We say defiantly give it a try and if your looking for somewhere new with good service and a bit more modern atmosphere with good food great view and good wine the Sugar Club might be the night out for you. read more

New Zealand's celebrated chef Peter Gordon has designed the menu at The Sugar Club, which offers fine dining with views of the city from the Skytower. It was a great place to go for my friend's Birthday and really nice that Peter came to our table. I loved the dishes I chose, Crayfish with Otago saffron linguine was simply divine. If could have had a whole bowl of just that, I would have. Then the Lamb Loin was beautifully presented with pomegranate, yoghurt, falafel and an eggplant and mint salad. Everyone's dishes looked great though and I think even though they are small, 3 courses is plenty. For dessert I was underwhelmed with the Solomon's gold Chocolate sorbet. I just found there wasn't any different flavours, it was just a plate of brown blandness. The Blueberry Cheesecake on the other hand was good and the Rhubarb with vanilla parfait was nice. The Sugar Club offers an elegant dining experience including a luxurious cocktail bar with amazing views. Definitely a must for at least a cocktail and canapés. read more

One visit was enough. Sadly, the main highlights were non-food related. One incentive for going was having your admission included to the Observation Deck (up to a full hour before your reservation). I also admire New Zealand born chef Peter Gordon but his menu turned out to be underwhelming. This may sound strange but I recommend checking out the restrooms. The men's are a bit cooler than the women's cause they have a lookout over the urinals, whereas the ladies only get a porthole view over the hand basins. read more

There are a lot of mixed reviews for The Sugar Club but after being three times in the last couple of years, I have to say each time my experience was 5 stars. The food is exquisite. The setting is upmarket yet hip and modern and those views are gorgeous by night. Our waiters were exceptional, always knowledgeable and doing everything with a smile. This is not the place to skimp. If you're going to dine here, you may as well go all out. Try the wine pairing or order a bottle of champagne. Great place to take your partner for a special evening out. read more

We had the 8-course degustation. The food was ambitious and mostly quite good but a couple of the courses were somewhat unimpressive. The service was OK when we arrived and then our waitress apparently left (without saying goodbye? Rude.) and was replaced by the most condescending little prick I've met in a while. Imagine a stereotypical snooty waiter in a Hollywood film. That was this guy. He barely managed to serve the rest of the meal. Everything slowed to a crawl. And when I asked to have my delicious roasted potatoes boxed up for a midnight snack, he informed me "Oh sir... I'm afraid we don't do that here" in a tone one would use with a small child. I have never felt so embarrassed in a restaurant in my life. We left shortly thereafter and came upon the capper for the evening-- the lift lobby in the basement was deserted and the very tall escalator that takes you back up to street level was shut off. Apparently, the building management didn't know or care that there were still people eating in the restaurant. Now this would have been an inconvenience for anyone, but for my parents-- both of whom have difficulty getting around-- it was practically impossible. The other five of us managed to get them both up to the top, but it was quite an effort and not once did anyone from the building or the restaurant appear to offer any assistance or apology. Inexcusable. There are other restaurants in Auckland with lovely views. Go there instead. This place just isn't worth it. read more

Fantastic service. Fantastic food. Been here twice. Each time delighted in the buffalo mozzarella and the classic PG beef pesto. Pork belly was good, but nothing to write home about. View breathtaking. Ambience delightful. Service the best I've received in an Auckland restaurant so far. Only letdown was dessert. Tried a few, didn't like any. Though things like the avocado sorbet and the sago sound interesting. None of them quite work however. So really I give this place 4.5 stars cos of the dessert issue. On a lovely winter'a day under a clear sky, I was invited as part of a corporate group (10 in total), I dined here at The Sugar Club. While the interior fit-out, spectacular view and nice service all got a tick, there is only one way to describe the food ... "underwhelming". There was absolutely no WOW factor, not to mention the portion sizes, which are minuscule, particularly in relation to the price. I think Peter Gordon's fusion signature cooking is over-complicated and just a little bit on the "try hard" side. My starter was a seared Pacific tuna with dashi broth, apple sponge cucumber, nam jim dressing, coriander and quinoa. It was tasteless! The tuna was prepared in tiny cubes and none of the flavours complemented one another. My dining companion opposite me had chosen the tuna also and not wanting to be rude, we said nothing but gave one another a knowing look, screwed up our noses and pushed our plates away!! My main was the day boat fish (the day's catch being terakihi). It was presented baked with whitebait chawanmushi, Jerusalem artichokes, salmon caviar and greens. Now this sounded good in principle, but the fish was over-cooked and sometimes the K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) mentality has a lot going for it. Duck fat potatoes (the potatoes tasted old) and broccolini were served as sides. My dessert was the Solomon's gold 70 percent chocolate sorbet with milk chocolate mousse and amaretti. And it was certainly in another league compared to the first two courses. Rich, creamy and delectable! I can only say that for a special experience at a higher cost point, The Sugar Club needs a bit of a rethink. And it's not somewhere I'd be recommending. Sorry Peter!! read more

I think this place is definitely a winner but you need to be prepared for what you are paying for. You are paying for the view which is incredible and the out there food preparations. If you don't want to pay up and you are a meat and potatoes type person this is not your place however if you are willing to push the boundaries a bit you will have a nice meal Crawfish linguine was the star for sure....u can get the Same dish at Sean Connolly grille FYI I had some cracker and fish foam dish which was interesting and good Venison was really tasty although mine was a touch cold. I had another opportunity to eat here, this time for dinner with spectacular views of the city by night. Didn't expect Peter Gordon to be in the house, nice treat. The staff are all very helpful and attentive, tonight was no exception. Just three courses this time, with a couple of extras along the way (a seared venison starter and the roasted pineapple sago I enjoyed last time). My first dish was Dahl Inari pocket tempura on a coconut, papaya and cucumber salad - true fusion, what Peter does best, loved. Lamb followed with falafel, eggplant, mint, tahini, pomegranate, again a really unexpected and lovely dish. Dessert was not as good - mochi matcha rhubarb, vanilla parfait, grapefruit paste. Sounded great, but didn't hit the right spot flavour wise. That aside, this is still a top choice for a special occasion. read more

This review is for the vegan menu, which trust me, I was over the moon when we found out that they did a vegan degustation menu!! First off, location is in the sky tower with phenomenal views. You really can't beat the views and that is really what you are paying for. As appreciative as I was that they had a vegan menu, I have to say I was not impressed. Everything is 'ok' and nothing 'the best I've ever had.' We started with a bread basket which was nice since they brought out EVOO and balsamic vinaigrette. First course was braised young artichokes. Ok. Nothing special. My favorite was the sesame Aubergine. I could have had the rest of the courses just be the aubergine. To follow was the onion bhajis, served lukewarm and texture was off. The tamarind laksa was overpoweringly spicy. Mushroom inari pocket sounded exciting but wasn't memorable. And the sorbet was the most disappointed course with the lemon soup and grapefruit so strong that I could not take more than two bites. read more

Hi, I am writing in regards to the worst experience we had yesterday when we came for dinner. Yesterday was my wife's birthday and as surprise I took her to your restaurant for dinner. we ordered our entree and we received it in like 15mins which was completely fine. Person who came with the entree was explaining the dish and I saw hair in my dish, so I asked him if that's hair he went to manager and showed her she came to me apologized and took that into kitchen and brought it back in 2 minutes. And the explanation from her was it is not from kitchen but may be fallen after coming out. This doesn't make any sense to me I don't expect a fine dining place like sugar club will have hair in their dishes, I was really expecting high standard of quality but this is what we got. And then we ordered our mains and we got the mains I have no fork to eat, so this shows there is no attention to customers who are coming there. I need call some one and request for fork which I don't appreciate. This is worst ever experience we had that too in find dining restaurant, this experience has ruined our day. I am giving sugar club 0 stars for this service, we will never return again in future. Hope this feedback helps to serve other customers better. read more

The service was good, food was pretty standard. The view is beautiful. It is recommended if you have a celebration, but again the food might be soso. We had Peking duck- got some hairs on the skin. Funny. I wouldn't expect this in a standard Chinese restaurant. But you can see it in sugar club. Crayfish linguine was ok, a bit salty for us. Dessert was standard. Overall, ok. I had high hopes before I ventured into this 4th incarnation of the sugar club. To be fair. It is still a good restaurant with better than usual service. The waiting staffs are impossible to fault. They are very knowledgeable on all dishes and the wines. They got the right plate to the right person everytime even if its a different waiter. So, service is great. The view is not much to write about, I mean it is by far the highest location for a restaurant in all of NZ. So it has got to be good. The only downside to that is, I had a window seat when the sun was just shinning in my face. The waiting staff did get the blind down, but the blind is no match for our super bright orb. Now, lets talk about the food. Most people would say the portion size is a bit small. To me they are just the right size to get you a taste of what's on the plate. And it leaves you wanting more. And that works. So if the dish is great then you would want to come back and order it again. But, this is the but. The quality of the dish is fairly inconsistent. My pasta was over cooked, the first piece of my duck breast was over cooked, the hapuka was over seasoned, the scallop was a teeny bit under cooked. Well, I m not trying to be a dick saying the food is bad. I m just judging it based on its price point. And then there was the lemon sorbet, it's so sour it's almost inedible. Nevertheless, there are good things about the food. The duck fat roastie were just super delicious. The pork belly is so tender and it melts in your mouth. The quail is cooked perfectly, same goes for the lamb rack. And the cheese plate is way too much for one person. Fine, I did pig out on a lunch for two. I really wanted to try everything. An elegant venue for a special meal. Peter Gordon continues his fusion fiesta with a new menu of small and large plates that can be combined as tapas, three to seven course meals and as you like it. Staples such as Asian duck, beef with pesto and a Mediterranean flavoured lamb are well presented and taste lovely. The desserts need a bit more work as they struggle to find balance and form (I don't know why, but I've always found this to be the case with PG's restaurants). The wine list is expansive and more than a match for the food. You can come up to the bar for a drink but it's $35 for a minimum of two cocktails if you aren't staying for dinner. If all else disappoints, then you can at least enjoy the amazing view of the city and harbour as the sun sets and the night sky twinkles around you. read more

Fish was heavy, oily, Only redeeming factor was this was so utterly disgusting it managed to make the other horrific dishes not want me to rush to the toilet. The octopus was sicky, over whelming drenched flavor and made me feel sick but comparing it to the king fish it actually wanted to stay in my tummy. Last on my list was venison which was sickly but better than the other two monstrosities. To add injury to injury my wifes dinner was as bad as mine, parking was NOT complimentary as advertised and we paid over $200 to put our selves through this. Love the name. Love, love the view. Loved we were celebrating a friend's birthday last night. Loved the wine. Loved Peter Gordon visiting our table. Liked the food. Unfortunately, I nearly broke a tooth on a stray pice of rock-hard crab pincer. I had two dishes: Waikanae crab with kina panna cotta, yuzu remoulade and grilled sweetcorn. The panna cotta overwhelmed everything else (apart from the rogue shell). I had Spiny Crayfish dish envy when I saw my friend's plate. Second choice was Beef Pesto - Sugar Club's classic dish. Cooked to my liking and tasty. Two plates were enough for me but others had three and four, including dessert. We all shared sides of green beans with almonds and duck fat roasties. Both ok. Given the prices of Sugar Club, I expected a bit more. Perhaps the crab dish had soured things for me. Wine selection is terrific. Our waiter couldn't have been more efficient and friendly. Definitely look forward to going back and sitting on the sofas with a cocktail and taking in our magnificent city again. read more

I was terribly upset and disappointed with the customer service. I went there on Nov 19 at about 4:30 pm with my husband and son. We wanted to try out the bar and so approached the lady at the reception desk. She was on phone with probably somebody making enquiries. She did not even look up at us or acknowledge us. We waited for 5 whole mins without being acknowledged. Finally, my husnand interrupted her saying "sorry to interrupt you, we have a question". She did not even look up but rudely pointed to the phone and continued on. After another few minutes, when she was done with her phone conversation, she rudely asked what we wanted. No apologies for making us wait, no smile, no hello. When we told her we just wanted to try the bar, she said " the bar opens at 5. You want to wait?". My husband told her, " well, you could have let us known that more than 5 mins before". She just rudely said - " didnt you see I was on the phone". This has been the rudest & most unwelcome behavior I have ever seen at a restaurant. I wonder why she couldnt have asked the person on phone to hold for a few seconds and acknowledged us and requested us to wait while she finished her call. Or atleast, smiled and said sorry for keeping us waiting after she was done with the call. Not sure if this is some sort of personal discrimination or if this is the way the restaurant treats their customers. read more

I visit Auckland 3-4 times a year on business. This was my third visit to Sugar Club because I'm addicted to the saffron linguine, and the rest of the degustation menu that is always beautiful and delicious. HOWEVER, on this visit, my evening was completely overturned by the very loud, drunk and disorderly people at the next table over, and in spite of my numerous requests to the waiter and manager, they would not ask them to be considerate of others, to quite down, or leave. I come to this restaurant because of the brand of quality and I expect the entire experience to be worth the considerable money that I spend on the meal. Their answer was for me to move, which at first I considered, but it did not solve the problem for all of the other guests in the restaurant who were likewise offended by this obnoxious and distracting behavior. Neither the waiter nor the manager even offered to comp my wine or do anything as compensation. I paid $244NZD for my meal and wine, and that is the last they will ever see my money. If the Sugar Club wants to become like Hooters then by all means encourage the drunks; if you want to save your brand, you better figure out a way to manage them.
