The weekend before our Friday flight to AKL, we made reservations for dinner at Orbit 360, Sky Towers revolving restaurant. We didn't even bother with booking tickets to the observation deck since the restaurant was going to take care of that for us while we sit and dine. Our first dinner in AKL and we weren't going to miss this opportunity. We got to the Sky Tower via the hop on off bus that stops right in front of the building. We got there 1 1/2 hour earlier so we could walk around, check out the casino, just look at the equipment of the adventurous activities they provide and browse the gift shop. Our reservation was for 5:30 pm but they allowed us to go up at 5 as the popular time for dinner is 6-7. And there was plenty of seating. We were told not to leave our belongings near the window because that part doesn't revolve and it would take 45-mins to get back to that spot. Where we sat initially faced the harbor. And for what was supposed to be a cloudy day, it was nice that we could actually see across the harbor. We were also able to see the back of our hotel that only had slivers of windows as all rooms have harbor views. As far as I know, dinner at Orbit 360 offers a 3-course pre-fixe menu. Each course has at least 5 items to choose from. And on weekends it is $129 NZD pp. That converts to approximately $77 per person. Additionally tipping is an option in New Zealand. However, we enjoyed our dining experience that we ended up tipping our waiter. Everything that we had was really good. And although the portions look small, we were full that I couldn't finish steak. I don't normally eat steak, but I wanted to try things that NZ was known for. Unfortunately, lamb wasn't on the menu for this specific evening. Venison was on the menu and I was willing to try it, but the waiter recommended the angus steak. Because we were in the City of Sails, we wanted to try the local fish in the area, and I still don't know what that is. However, my sister's snapper was also really good. Before dessert came, they gave us a mini cupcake to celebrate Easter. Although we were full, there's always room for dessert. I can't remember what we ordered other than it was really pretty and very good. And lastly, we got to enjoy the sunset. What a way to end our first day in this lovely city. read more

Orbit 360 was a nice experience. I booked it waaayyyyy in advance and was surprised how easy it was to go to. We stayed near the quay because we were cruising out of Auckland and Orbit was a quick walk. The entrance is inside the hotel/casino behind it. Food was pretty good. Drinks were great. Views were magical. Service was okay. It's a pre fix menu and they pretty much only have 2 reservations per table per night so they are just pumping out orders of the same stuff. Felt fancy enough to celebrate an occasion. Elevator was fast. Exit through the gift shop. I would recommend for the experience. read more

Tony was our server and provided exceptional service this evening. Attentive and provided suggestions along with dish explanations. He worked out table and 2 very large tour groups (more on that later). We arrived on time and planned our dinner around the sunset. It was a grey cloudy day but opened up slightly around sunset. We were provided a pink and blue westward sky as we finished out 3 course meal. I had the sea bass and would get it again. We also had the venison and filet. The chicken dish was a tad dry but very flavorful. The revolving restaurant made about 3 rotations during our dinner window of 7:30 to 9 pm. It didn't seem fast but it was if you stood on the seam. The only drawback was 2 large tours arrived about 3/4 through our dinner and tha really slowed things down and removed the intimacy/wonder we had befre. They were noisy and touristy. Probably 60 total between the two groups. They were on either side of our table. So be prepared for sudden atmosphere changes during your meal during cruise ship or tourist times. We loved ALL the food. It was delicious and fancy! The crab pappardelle was my favorite. I wish I could have gotten a bigger order of it and skipped the beef. My mom's prawns looked amazing and cooked perfectly. A tiny bit of char to make it crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. She said her snapper was well seasoned and paired well with the crispy bits on top. The beef was cooked to my liking and I love the mashed potato puree it sat on. It made the best bite when together. Juicy and tender. Good quality beef! The service was spectacular and they were very attentive. The moving was weird and made you a tiny bit dizzy only when you over thought it. read more

I came here to celebrate my birthday and was highly impressed. The restaurant has a special called "Golden hour" with prefix menu selection of appetizer, main course and dessert. The special also includes a glass of wine and entry to sky city observation deck. Each dish was lovely and delicious. My appetizer was a tuna tataki, similar to seared Hawaiian poke with Asian flair. The tuna was soft and tasty. My entree was Angus filet, I ordered medium and it came out exactly at medium. The filet was soft and flavorful. Then I got a complimentary birthday treat, a cupcake with flavorful fruit filling. The final dish, the dessert, the highlight. I ordered the exotic slice, but I couldn't figure out what it exactly was. It was some sort of airy fruit cheesecake with a harden fruit shell. It came with sorbet and a crumble and was one of the best desserts I ever had. It was an explosion of fruity flavor with multi textures in your mouth. This was by far one of the best meals I've had in a long time. My daughter got a Keiki (children) menu and picked spaghetti and banana split as her entree and dessert. She mopped up both dishes and declared it as "yummy for her tummy." Service was friendly and attentive from the hostess in waiting area, our server and support staff who served our dishes. Orbit 360, the tower's revolving restaurant, takes the experience to a new level--literally and figuratively. St. Louis used to have a revolving restaurant in the Millennium Hotel so this concept is close to my heart. Completing a full rotation every hour, we had ever-changing views as we had our drinks and meal. The salmon here is a must-try. The dish pairs beautifully with the restaurant's attentive service and thoughtfully curated wine list. Admittedly, Sky Tower can feel a bit like a tourist trap due to its popularity and ticket prices. However, the sheer scale of the views and the unique dining experience at Orbit 360 make it worth it. read more

On our last night in Auckland, we went to Orbit for another "fancy" dinner. At $95NZ per person (it's now $109 to $119 per person, per the website), it was a lot, but that price included a starter, a main course, and a desert. We ordered the salmon tortellini and pork belly for the starter, salmon and beef for the main, and lemon orchard and keke tiakarete for dessert. The food was alright, but nothing that stood out, and at $95, you expect the food to stand out. In summary: mediocre food, expensive drinks, and high prices. 2.5 stars. It's pricey but the courses are substantial & tasty. It's three courses consisting of a starter, and main and a dessert. I think this is a must do while you are in Auckland if you have enough time. For the great views and great food, we really didn't think it was that expensive. If we were to do the same thing in a city like NYC it would be at least quadruple the price. I got the pork belly entree and the lamb rump as the main. WOW both were delicious. The lamb was the favorite at the table. The service was 15/10 and the view cannot be beat. Where you eat rotates in a circle so you constantly get a different view of Auckland. We had an early booking for a group of six to take advantage of the wonderful sunset views of the city. Auckland turned it on with all seasons in one evening. The three course menu offered a good selection of choices to meet the needs of our group. When booking we were made well aware of the two hour time limit to allow a later sitting. It wasn't until about 2hours 20 that we were reminded of the limit, even then we weren't rushed out. The food was wonderful, with my highlight being the oysters entree. What a terrible experience. I booked 5 months ago for 14 of us. We spent almost $2k on all of our meals for my wife Vanessa's 50th birthday. I spent $120 on a cake, they brought the cake out and it said "Happy 11th Birthday Queenie". I checked with the server to make sure we didn't accidentally receive someone else's cake. They said no that's hers. I didn't make a fuss. They came around after 2 hours and said we all needed to leave. Nobody warned us, nobody told me when we booked, checked in, ordered or anytime whatsoever that there was a 2 hour time limit. At the same time, they took all of our overpriced drinks and dumped them without any warning. When I asked to speak with someone, they were extremely rude. I asked if they felt like this was a good experience for us and they said yes. I then asked them to comp some of our drinks because they dumped them without any notification, not even because of the cost, but because we were really frustrated by this point. They said no. She said she talked to the group leader (me) which she never did. Approx 10 overpriced drinks tossed with no warning and we were kicked out. The GM was unresponsive, belligerent, and just overall rude. They just rely on the fact that it's a tourist destination and don't care about service. Dining at the Sky Tower 360 degree revolving restaurant was such an amazing end to our New Zealand trip! I've eaten at other revolving restaurants, but this was particularly impressive because of its proximity to the SkyCity hotel and all its holiday festivities down below. To get to the restaurant, you enter the hotel and then take the escalators down (very counter-intuitive). Then you check into the restaurant with a hostess that gives you a ticket for free entry into SkyTower. We went to see the views before dinner since we got there early and after dinner too. The views of the harbor and the surroundings were beautiful and the sun was still up at 8pm. We took the elevator downstairs for dinner and got seated immediately for our reservation. The brilliant part of this revolving restaurant that also was a highlight was that every table got a seat right next to the window. No worries about not dining right by the views. We chose the 3 course dinner meal so we got a choice of an entree, main, and dessert for $85 NZD. Between the two of us, we ordered the pan seared scallops and beetroot cured salmon for entrees (the appetizers). For the main, I chose the Hawke's Bay lamb loin since we saw so many sheeps on pastures during our vacation. Lastly for dessert, I chose the flat white and my boyfriend ordered the Keke Tiakarete. The food was superb and so rich. I loved how the lamb didn't taste gamey at all, almost like a steak. The salmon entree was very generous and the eggplant puree with dill creme fraiche and pickled cucumber was so refreshing. As the same with the seared scallops! The pea truffle puree was heavenly! The service was great and very attentive. Several waiters and waitresses actually came out to serve our meals. Surprisingly, by the time we ate dessert, the city lights turned on and the darkness came around 9:30pm. The revolving views were so wonderful and the whole dining experience was amazing. Website totally lacks this info, we arrived at 3:30 to try and spend time before dinner with our 2 children. We arrived to find we could not go up and further the doors to Orbit were locked. At 4:30 they open the doors, only to say that last access is for observation 5:30, that it's over booked / crowded and we couldn't go to observation. BUT for some reason .... if we paid more to buy separate tickets, even though our dinner is $100 a plate, that was sufficient and magically then we could go to observation, told us to then pay FULL price, no discount at all offered. Website gives no info on when to arrive, that you can't get access, observation and that it's going to be overcrowded at that time, and that the That it will be closed to give any help or info if you arrive early. Really poor communication, all the managers were magically not available to speak further at all and posting this so others can realize / not make pretty reasonable assumptions. Sad experience. Our dinner at Orbit was perhaps one of my favorite experiences of my 2 week trip. Though, full disclosure, it was our first sit down meal at the very BEGINNING of our New Zealand adventure. If it was at the end, I might have been secretly crying (or more than likely SIGHING) at the thought of leaving. A trip to the top of the Sky Tower is $32 New Zealand Dollars per person. So I figured, why not pay a little more and get a meal to go along with the view? The viewing platform is included with any dinner reservation. Advanced reservations are needed. I tried making them on the same day but the restaurant said it was full. But clearly, I couldn't take no for an answer and got our hotel concierge to call. He scored us a table within minutes (and a nice tip from us). As a side note, there were plenty of tables available so clearly a mistake by the restaurant. We recommend showing up about an hour before your dinner reservation to walk around the Sky Tower viewing platform. The elevator ride whisks you to the top in seconds. We did several laps around the room, and played the fun game of guessing where we walked during the day. Afterward, we explored The Sugar Club, which is the higher-end restaurant at the top of the Sky Tower. It's a prix-fixe menu, with anywhere from 6 to 8 different courses. We weren't very hungry, but were allowed to lounge in the bar and get a drink. We loved the Art Deco decor, and the Heath Ceramic vases on every table. It was like being back in California. The Sugar Club is also where you can watch the daring (or shall we say, crazy) people walk outside as part of an extra package at the Sky Tower. We headed to our dinner reservation at Orbit, which is a revolving restaurant overlooking the entire city. I had the New Zealand lamb... And clearly, I wasn't feeling guilty (YET!) since I didn't leave the center of Auckland. read more

Had to choose between Orbit and the Sugar Club during our stay in Auckland. After reading Yelp reviews, I'm more than pleased with our selection with Orbit. We got the three course choice which includes an appetizer, entree, & dessert. The scallops appetizer was an excellent combination of flavors. The oysters appetizer was outstanding. Entrees of snapper and pork chop were top notch. I'll be talking about the crayfish bisque that the snapper sat atop of for years. My favorite dessert was the peanut butter tip - light, airy, and perfect. The food was perfect portions so you didn't leave hungry or feel overly stuffed. Came here and stayed and the grand sky city hotel and my wife and I enjoyed it a lot it's centrally located we ended up coming to orbit for our 3 year anniversary dinner and we order dozen oyster and they were fresh and tasty Salmon and cauliflower Parmesan the service was great and food was delicious and the view is amazing about an hour to rotate around and you might catch someone sky diving. So here's the breakdown: ~ Starting with reservations, we requested a window table. For dinner, they were all booked up for about a month. We had a better chance of getting a window table during lunch-time, so we booked the first date out, three days away. Score! The hostess on the lower level was very helpful and recommended it. Keep that tip in mind, if you really want to sit along the glass. Other than that, there should be plenty of open inner dining tables available. ~ We arrived on-time, and were the first ones there. The manager greeted and seated us, so no issues. Dining & Ambiance: ~ Very romantic! Clean wooden tables, only I had to switch out my dirty water glass. I politely asked, and maybe that's where the attitude started. ~ Long tables good for groups, and more inner tables for a somewhat less open private dining. ~ The setting was perfect! I can only imagine how it would be like at night. FOOD glorious FOOD: ~ We've never been here, so we did the Express Menu at $49 per person. You basically get a side with a main, or a main with a dessert. They call their sides here "entrees" apparently. I think this is where confusion and the attitude came in with our server giving the look of "seriously, you don't understand". We were calm about it, and of course we ended up ourselves with the "geez, what gives buddy" feeling once he turned his back. ~ He brings us a cheese plate that we didn't order. Mix up between that and the burrata entree. Again, walks away with rolling eyes. ~ Starters: ~~ We ordered the Tomato pulp and basil Burrata ($22). It wasn't what I expected from a burrata, as I don't even recall the taste. Or maybe the bad attitude just set the tone. We had to order a side of bread as this entree didn't include anything for the mozzarella. Plain as day, but check out my beautiful pic. ~ Main courses: ~~ Charmoula coated lamb loin with pomegranate molasses ($43). Now this was plump and tender! A winner of a dish! Get this if you can't decide. ~~ Roasted fillet of snapper with an oyster cream sauce ($42). This sat on a lemon risotto, roasted tomato still on the vine, and asparagus. Damn, one of the best fish dishes other than having it deep fried with chips. So fresh and savory! I'd order this again! ~ Dessert: ~~ Ice cream and sorbet mix with biscotti and an edible flower ($16.50). Man, I just love the buttery cows that gave it's milk for this bowl of ice cream. We had vanilla bean, pistachio, and mango. And all were simply blissful. ~~ Triple X Coffee ($14) with Tia Maria, Kahlua, expresso, and cream. Now this was what I needed! One refreshing cup of coffee! It almost made me forget about our server. With all that said, I made the best of it and enjoyed the dining experience. So the view is crazy good. It costs 29 dollars to go up in the tower or you can invest another 11 and get to have the view and a great meal. They have a 40 dollar minimum to dine in the tower. The restaurant spins so you can slowly take in this amazing view while enjoying dinner. We showed up early and we got admission to main level with all the people that paid the 29 to see it as well. So a tip is come early and walk around the observation deck first. The food is decent. You are paying for the view and experience. The chef makes an amazing steak. I suggest you get this and leave the other stuff out of your mind. I had ordered the risotto and had to send it back since it was actually a bean dish somehow. Get the steak it was excellent. The desserts were very unique I had the apple compote. This dish was a reconstructed apple. The service was superb. I will come back the next time Im in Auckland. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food at Orbit, originally thinking it would be a touristy gimmick with sub-par food. However, our meal was actually pretty decent and it's a great value if you're keen to check out the observation deck. They have a $40 per person minimum spend for dinner (less for lunch) but a Sky Tower ticket on its own is already $32. We were four people and we got a window seat on the outside of the rotunda. The restaurant is constantly revolving so that it makes a full circle once an hour - it actually moves a little faster than I expected and the movement is noticeable. The revolution made me a teeny bit motion sick but it's a neat idea and the views are very nice. For food, we had salmon, steak, and duck and all were tasty. The plum dessert was very nice as well, and beautifully presented. The only thing we didn't like was the prawn salad, which we found a bit salty with too much mayo. We didn't try any cocktails but they do have a wide range of wine and spirits available. Overall, I think this is a neat thing to do once - good food, great views, good value combo with the Sky Tower observation deck. I personally won't be back (partly because I didn't enjoy the revolution) but I would recommend it to visitors. (Side note: The Sugar Club upstairs stands on its own two feet as an excellent restaurant and I WOULD return to dine there.) read more
