I'm now on a ribfest tear…read more This past Saturday, after having had a great experience on a bee farm in Mulmur, I drove a bit to Barrie to hit Barrie Ribfest. Three weekends. Three visits to three different ribfests. I'm making up for lost rib time. Barrie Ribfest this year was held in the parking lot of Georgian Mall, where Sears used to be. It was bittersweet seeing the Sears sign up with a maple leaf in its logo. This ribfest was well-organized. As a tourist, I had no problems following the signs that led me over to where I needed to be. The smell of ribs helped me get there, too. One woman welcomed me and handed me a menu. I thanked her and slowly made my way over to the ribbers. There were three ribbers. I seem to be following Sticky Fingers wherever it is. Since I had already had food for this place at Scarborough Ribfest, I wanted to try a different vendor. I had a choice between Billy Bones or Camp 31. I went with the latter. There are two drive-thru lanes for each rib vendor. The lines moved pretty well. A friendly man came over to my car and took my order. I got the full rack dinner that comes with coleslaw and baked beans. I also got a side order of cornbread. There is an donation entry fee of $3, which goes to the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. I paid with a credit card and included a tip. It was such an easy and smooth transaction. I pulled up to the pickup area and had a sweet woman bring me my food in a strong paper bag. I thanked her and slowly drove away. There was another drive-thru area where you could get corn and Tiny Tom's Donuts. I am fortunate to live in Markham where the latter is headquartered and I indulge year-round on those donuts. I also eat corn weekly, so I passed on both. I parked on the other side of the shuttered Sears store and had an extremely late lunch just shy of 4 pm in my car. There were two folks doing the same on the steps of Sears. Camp 31's ribs were so good. They were meaty, and the sauce on them was tangy and smoky. I had half a rack, because I needed room to enjoy the sides. I ate the entire side of coleslaw. It's creamy coleslaw with a good crunch and decent flavour. It was a winner in my books. The baked beans were fabulous. This places uses more than one type of bean. You could see the chunks of onions. The baked beans are delicious. I must flag a return visit to Camp 31. The cornbread was a small little loaf of golden goodness. It was soft with crunchy edges. So good! This place does everything well. This dinner was huge. I had leftovers the following day and the flavours were even better! I am having such a fun time checking out ribfests this summer. I'm so glad that I found one close to where I was last Saturday. I hope to return next year and discover more good barbeque eats. (325)

And they have different kinds of lavender. We learned something about lavender today. There is a playground for my kids to play together. We sat under the shade nicely. Put in some Instagrammable backdrop and charge visitor a premium admission so they can do all the selfies and post it online. I have to thanks Christel Lake Lavender for opening up their property and share with the public. There is no admission fees at all to visit. One might argue where is the Lavender field? But the set up of this farm is more educational with different varieties of lavender planted. There are even a play area for kids. Picnic areas with a pop up "restaurant" if you want to grab a bite. Trails to walk around the lake. All these for free?! Property is well maintained and you can tell the owner is proud of his farm. Check in at the gift shop if you want a private tour around the property. They also host private events and weddings. The lake is just the perfect back drop for photographs for that special day. I love and support local business. So I highly recommend you to visit Christel Lake Lavender when you in the Port Perry area and check out what they offers.

It's the Thanksgiving weekend and you don't want to go through the hassle of baking your own pies,…read morewhere do you go? Many people flock to Homestead Orchards. They make their own pies, tarts, biscuits, cookies and brownies from fruit that they harvest on site. They also have unpasteurized apple cider, jams and Thornbloe cheeses for sale. Nothing sits on the shelves for very long because there's a long line up of customers; the good thing is, the baked goods are fresh and the line up goes quickly. Most staff are as sweet as apple pie, there are only a few sour apples in the bunch. Things I've tried: - Brownie with chocolate frosting - everyone raves about their regular brownies, but this, soooo moist and chocolatey! - Apple pie - great balance between tart and sweet. I would have preferred to have the crust golden brown (see pic). You can also find the pies in their refrigerated case ready to bake at home, which would solve the anemic crust issue AND you could probably pass it off as one of your own. - Assorted tarts - Pumpkin - nice spicing - Maple Syrup - too sweet - Apple Streusel - too sweet, I'd rather buy the apple pie. - Apple and Cheese biscuit - savoury, would make a nice side especially if there was gravy to be sopped up. - Scone with fruit - taste more like a biscuit. As far as the apple picking goes, you can bring your own bags or purchase some there (small bags are 75 cents). You can pick apples close to the front of the farm but there are only a few varieties available and fewer apples in the trees. To get to the orchards in the back you'll need to hop on their covered wagon; please leave a donation, it goes to the food bank. Before you start picking, you'll get a quick tutorial on how to pick apples without damaging the tree or apples around it. Trees are short and full of apples so kids will have an easy time picking their own. When you get back you'll need to have your apples weighed at the right side of the entrance to the store then line up for the cashier is to the left. If all of that is too much of a hassle for you, there are apples in baskets and bags in the store that you can pick up. Bring a picnic, park it on one of their picnic tables next to the playground, and enjoy the day.
