The Sunflower lounge has been a go-to place for me from the day I started going out. It has many facelifts over the years but it has always kept its stance on playing the best retro and old-school music in Birmingham. Pretty much any night of the week you can find the resident Dj's playing a huge mix of funk, soul, disco and motown in the upstairs bar, while in the downstairs space local bands play alongside more well known touring acts. The drinks here are not going to win any awards for being fancy or ornate, but that really isn't the point of the place. This is the type of place where you can visit, feel welcome and enjoy some quality music with like minded people. No you can't have a cocktail made in a beautiful glass garnished with wild berries but if you are looking for that this really isn't the place for you. As the bars makeover isn't yet complete I won't say too much about it but the signs are promising, looks to be a fresh contemporary look with a good range of music and friendly, helpful staff. I'll update in the future. Largely we went to go and try the new food from the Big Papas team. They have a nice concise menu of American style, big, hearty food (while miraculously staying non-greasy) which, for a main and two sides for £10, is one delicious bargain. Of particular note are the batter they are using, it's unbelievably delicate and crispy, and the tasty hot sauce. All in all it's cheap enough to be a no brainer, although the venue was lacking a certain cosiness but I'll put that down to the work they are carrying out. We'll certainly be going again soon, especially considering they have just launched a solid looking lunch menu! read more

I was lucky enough to visit The Sunflower Lounge with a group of friends and also enjoy some tasty savory pies from Pietanic. Afterwards we watched some cool punk rock metal bands live downstairs in their club. This place is no frills. Grab a drink and a bite, hang out for a bit, and then watch some up and coming bands play downstairs. The bartender/manager Joel gave us the VIP treatment. He exhibited excellent customer service with a smile! The pie I ordered was a sweet potatoe spinach pie and goats cheese with steamed peas on the side. Although it was a bit smaller than I imagined, the whole thing still filled me up. I ordered a very tasty fruit strongbow on tap. They also stocked bourbon, in which I ordered the Wild Turkey over ice. Very tasty! Joel was also kind enough to let me stash my massive shopping from the day in their staff area. This allowed me and my friends to visit the performing bands downstairs. Out of the three performing, the one we were able to snag front row spots was called Crosa Rosa. They were all young but very good! Their beat and jam was tight! I was impressed! This is a free-wheeling indie rock 'n' roll joint, with sticky floors, low lighting and a foozball table. It isn't fancy, but it is fun. Its position on Smallbrook Queensway can make it a bit out of the way, but if you are arriving into New Street or Moor Street Station or dining in the Chinese Quarter it is a good place to stop en route to the nearby Island bar or Victoria. I have long been a fan of the Sunflower and have been visiting since I can remember! It's main attraction for me is the varying genres of music you will find. It really is different than the usual tripe you can expect to hear when in a standard bar! There is a great selection of no frills drinks and everyone is very friendly. I've often popped in for one on the way home and ended up staying until close. The downstairs hosts a wide selection of bands, many on a week night for a really decent price. Stumbling across a new band you like which you haven't seen before can really improve your mid-week evening. It looks miles better since the make-over and I am gagging to try their new food offerings. I have heard great things and the menu is very appetising! I haven't ever used the Sunflower as a bar - as its always quite busy and the crowd is a bit too hipstery for me. However... I have been here many a time to see gigs. Firstly, an average gig at the Sunflower is about £5 in for 3 bands. The sound is excellent (probably better than any other medium/small venue in Birmingham). We've always enjoyed the musical acts here and the atmosphere really lends itself to intimate gigs. You will end up paying £3 for a can of red stripe, but if you want to check out the bar - they do numerous cheap drinks offers on a Monday night. Cola is a bargain £1.50 a pint - perfect for staying hydrated at a gig! I would recommend you check out this bar. It got voted Britains best small venue by the NME just a few years ago. read more

We stopped by here for a yelp group meal and drink, also watched a rock gig. I had steak and ale pie and sweet potato fries with a fruit cider. I weren't let down by my expectations whatsoever it tasted great. Superb Beer selection too, definitely a must for a casual Beer & food with mates. If you're a fan of live up and coming music artists too, this is a great venue to go. Overall service and experience were a great night and we were well looked after. I used to frequent the Sunflower Lounge when it first opened, around 10 years ago. Since then I think I've popped in once or twice for a quick drink based on it's locality and convenience more than anything else. After hearing that Big Papa's had taken over the kitchen, I thought it was time to revisit this venue. We were heading to an event at The Victoria, so found the Sunflower Lounge to be ideally placed for a pre-talk bite to eat. It's been so long since I've been to the Sunflower Lounge that I couldn't really say which bits were newly refurbished, and which were original. Having said that, the exterior signage is certainly new, I've walked past enough times to know this much. The layout inside is as it was, but it does look clean and tidy, so I guess that means it's new right? We grabbed a table by the widow and perused the menu. At the time they offered one main with two sides for £10. My companion only really wanted one side, but ordered two as that's what the menu said. She'll be 'pleased' to know that they have since changed the menu, meaning that you get one side for £10 and two for £12. We both ordered buttermilk chicken. I had a pint of Erdinger (which is about as adventurous as the beer gets - this is Peroni-ville), and my companion had a strange but interesting cider / rum blend bottle. The food is presented on rather large wooden TV dinner trays, complete with handles on the side. I felt it was a struggle to the two of them on our small table for two. Plates may be seen as old fashioned and boring, but at least they served a purpose well. The chicken was really good, if perhaps a little salty. The sweet potato fries were fantastic! And the homemade chilli sauce was to die for. The mac'n'cheese was however a bit dry and congogulated underneath, like microwaved pasta with a bit of cheese on top. I'm also not sure why everywhere is offering mac'n'cheese as a side dish now. In my mind it's a main. The whole thing was very salty, and as someone that doesn't put salt on my food, I found it a bit much. Otherwise it was delicious, would go again. Before I left, I popped into the gents and found that they obviously hadn't been included in the refurbishment. I am a sunflower lounge convert, I had been here several years previous however after a suggestion from Dan G I went again for a midweek drink and have to say I am incredibly impressed. The Sunflower lounge I remember has completely gone and in it's place is a trendy, fun bar which had a young and trendy crowd of people and some of the nicest bar staff I have met in a long time. The upstairs has been recently decorated and is a lot bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside and then downstairs was an area for live bands which had a great atmosphere. I would thoroughly recommend the sunflower lounge for an after work drink or somewhere great to start a fun night out. The staff were fantastic and the atmosphere will make you want to go back again. The Sunflower Lounge is a small bar and live music venue positioned on the outskirts of town adjacent to New Street Station. The Sunflower Lounge holds a special place in my heart as it was here that ten years ago, I was first given the opportunity to DJ and I've put on hundreds of live shows here over the years. The Sunflower doesn't try to be something it's not, it's cheap and cheerful, a good hangout for students and young people and also a good after-work or pre-train journey haunt. It can get pretty noisy at the weekend. Upstairs they usually have DJs playing, plenty of seating, a foozball table, fully stocked bar and several televisions which usually show sports or cult films. Downstairs is arguably the smallest live music venue in Birmingham, the set up is basic but the size and layout mean for good acoustics and a great intimate atmosphere. The Sunflower Lounge has recently changed management but the new managers have tried to keep that same indie/alternative relaxed vibe and have even added in some additional drinks offers. read more

Over the years I've been going in for a quick drink. the bar staff are really helpful an even suggested where to go next for a good night out sometimes. The place won't blow your socks off but for good beer at a good rate I don't think it can be beat. ITs had a recent refurbishment but the toilets are still the same. Dirty and old needs a face lift to match the rest of the place. But having said that its safe to say we will be back. Great place for local bands and chilled out indie evenings. The Sunflower Lounge works for me on two levels. 1) If I'm catching a train from New St but am early and want somewhere to hang out to kill some time, then it's a good choice. 2) If I want to go somewhere where the drinks aren't too pricey, and the clientele aren't too snooty, and there's even live music from time to time - then it's the perfect place to go. I particularly like being able to sit outside on teetering barstools when the weather is hot and smugly clutch a lovely cold pint whilst hot and harrassed Bullring shoppers scoot past me. With a great beer selection the Sunflower Lounge is a relaxed indie place to start a good night out. I've never managed to make it there in time for the food but I'm told its tasty and its easy on the wallet. There is always a great vibe here and with it's tiny bit of outdoor seating it's easy to catch up with smoking mates. The Sunflower lounge always feels like a secret bar due to it's compact nature but when the sun hits the front windows are opened and the place feels instantly bigger. There are always posters up for things happening of an indie ilk in Brum, so you always feel like this place is on the pulse of what's going on. Difficult to do a full review at the moment as the revamp doesnt seem quite completed. When I was there on a quiet Tuesday evening there was a lot of drilling and banging and a strong smell of paint. However, from what I've seen so far it's going to be fab. I've had some great nights in the past at Sunflower Lounge, including a very merry New Year! At the weekend there is a very hipstery crowd but it's a bit more chilled out in the week. The music is good, lots of 60s soul and indie and so on, which suits me and it's particulary nice on a summer evening when they open the doors. The revamped signage and decor have done a good job of making it a little more grown up and contemporary without losing its atmosphere. I hadnt noticed the food in the past but the kitchen has now been taken over by street food vendors Big Papas. I'd tried a taster at the launchnight and it was so good I had to pop back for more! The menu is small and simple with 1 main and 2sides for £10. The food is deep south, fried chicken and so on, but with extra things you dont often see like deep fried okra and yam mash. The okra is very good indeed! I had buttermilk fried chicken with sweet potato chips and greens. The chicken wasnt greasy at all and was in the most delicious crunchy batter. The chips had a tasty sprinkle of paprika and the 'greens' turned out to be cabvage, perfectly cooked and a lovely vibrant colour. I loved the presentation on a wooden tray though they were a little too large for th table! It was great that the meal was served with cute little pots of coleslaw and hot sauce. Both of these were seriously good, I'm sure the coleslaw had apple in and the hot sauce was spicy without ruining your taste buds. You can order at the bar or a staff member will come over to you if it's not too busy. The bar man was super friendly and helpful. Don't forget to use your independent Birmingham card for 10% off food AND drinks! 2 G&Ts 2 ciders and 2 meals came to less than £30. Delicious and good value! The only thing lacking is the drink selection. It's fine but they coulddo with a decent cider on tap and some more interesting spirits. I'm not saying they need to go down the craft beer or cocktail route-thats's not their vibe. They do have Blind Pig cider though! Other than that, I will definitely be heading to The Sunflower Lounge more often now, I need to try the blackened prawn starter! read more

The Sunflower Lounge now has a refreshed food menu through its collaboration with Big Papa's. This place is quite small, and can get crowded. The bar offering keeps the patrons coming, as does the music. But now, the food is something to really stick around for. The Big Papa's menu is a modest affair, due to their tiny kitchen. The philosophy here to buy fresh ingredients (most of which comes from the Birmingham markets), and then cook everything as fresh to order as possible. The soul food on offer here is great value, as well as great flavours. A main, and two sides is £10. The menu gets updated from time to time, with new dishes, and flavours so it's worth looking out for the addition of new flavours in ribs, and wings etc. I ordered the cola brisket, with sweet potato fries, and green veg. The cola brisket is a tower of tasty, and tender meat. And the sweet potato fries are divine. The vegetables tasted buttery, yet steamed; a bit strange but still delicious. The spicy sauce that comes with the food is beautiful. It has flavour, as well as heat; though I found that I needed more of it. I love spicy food! This place sometimes gets too busy, to find a table to order food, especially when it's a Friday, or Saturday night. So try to get there early if you want to bag a table. It's worth noting that Big Papa's at The Sunflower Lounge is available through Deliveroo. So if you fancy some good soul food delivered to your door, then that's the way to do it. read more

Unfortunately I only had the pleasure of visiting the Sunflower lounge for half hour or so to meet friends at the end of a night! There was a band playing downstairs and they were absolutely immense. With small venues like this, I feel like there's always the risk of the organisers just grabbing any old bum hole who can look at a guitar that happens to be available for the slot they need filling. But here, I get the impression that they really work hard and do their research. Shouldn't come as a surprise that it's incredibly sweaty and intense in the music room but the venue is small enough to be able to leg it out of there to the upstairs bar for a quick breather. And even though the music room was absolutely rammed, it was easy enough to get right to the front for a quick little looksee before I had to go! Love venues that are this intimate and friendly. So bummed I didn't arrive earlier and that I couldn't stay longer! read more

Right by New Street Station, about 3 minutes walk from the Bull Ring, so pretty much just offset from the actual centre, The Sunflower Lounge is quite a nice little bar. There's a really relaxing vibe in there, especially in the summer months when you can enjoy a seat outside. A slight rocker/indie setting, but they're very friendlly in there, and often have live music (up and coming bands) on the weekends, which creates a rather intimate setting. The decor, although it leaves a lot to the imagination is very insteresting and fits in well with the style of the place. I love the Sunflower lounge for a quick drink or even on a night out. My only complaint would be that there is definitely a 'clique' going on in here and when you walk in every head turns to see if you're a regular or not. I have also noticed the bar staff not as attentive to you as they are to their mates sitting on the stall in front of the bar probably drinking free beer. Oozing alternative style and with a well-deserved reputation as an fun, stress-free night out, the Sunflower Lounge is tucked away at the back of New Street Station. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in charm. It has a chilled atmosphere, great music and often a good film being shown on the bar's TV. With a main bar, upstairs seating area and basement room ideal for small-scale gigs and DJ nights, the Sunflower is very much the tardis of Birmingham's music scene. Regular club nights and live events put on by some of the city's most popular indie promoters mean there is almost always something worth checking out on a given night. The main bar is tiny and usually staffed by no more than two people, meaning you can wait a while to get served when the place is busy (and it quite often is). However, the tall glasses of draft Peroni are worth the wait! The only thing I would change about the Sunflower is replacing the rickety seating and getting bigger tables. If it's early in the evening and you fancy a quiet corner with your friends, it's a bit of a gamble that you won't end up on a chair with a wobbly leg - not as relaxing as you might have hoped! read more

A great find round the back of Brum, just a short walk away from New Street Station and the centre of town. A very interesting place, lots of stuff on the walls, on the sides, and loads of local gig info/flyers to pick up and browse over on the bar. A little hive of live music too, with the basement, although a littl cramped, doubling as a live music venue. Quite often it's free entry, but if it's not it's not usually much. Quite exciting music scene there, and the bands are more than likely well worth your time and money. Alas, beers ar not cheap, think they were a little over £3, but I do recall having a most delicious pint of Peroni on tap there, I had to go back for more! Very cute, hipster-ish bar, but thankfully without the attitude. The fact that it's near to New Street station is undoubtedly a plus point, and it certainly sticks out amongst the otherwise pretty dour looking street. The music is good - often a mix of retro and alternative, and the clientele are young and good looking, if not a little scenesterish. For a long time The Sunflower was one of Brum's best kept secrets. Now that they have Big Papa's serving the food it's getting more and more busy. The food by Big Papa's is incredible, I've had the fried chicken more times than I'd care to admit and it's been great every time. As far as sides go, the Mac and cheese is a must try! For anywhere in the city centre the price is great. £12 will get you a main and 2 sides. Which should be more than enough to fill anyone. As a bar, The Sunflower is still one of the coolest places to drink in Birmingham. There's always good music playing and a good selection of beers available if, like me, you're a craft beer fan it's great. We all know the feeling of waking up on a Saturday with a dry mouth and pounding head, and insisting that "the last pint was off". A sure fire solution to that rubbish feeling is a fry-up, and we always advocate brunch at JuJu's for those afflicted with B.R.Y. (Booze Related Yuckiness). The lads at Big Papa's aren't offering breakfast, but definitely offer food for the soul that will sort that griping stomach right out before you get back on it on a Saturday afternoon. Think New Orleans southern flavours, spicy fruity chutneys, utterly crispy fried chicken, and unctuous slow cooked beef and pork. Although they're a street food venture, presently they have residency at The Sunflower Lounge on Smallbrook Queensway. That venue is no doubt familiar with many of you as it's been serving up the best of indie live music for a decade. It has been recently refurbished and while it's lost none of its edgy charm it's now somewhere you wouldn't mind eating in! The Sunflower lounge also take part in the Independent Birmingham card which gave us 10% off food and drink (check website for details, we're not affiliated, we just happen to use it). We went along for a Saturday lunch ahead of some afternoon shopping and drinking. We knew the portions were large so skipped the starters, but on offer were blackened shrimp, spicy fried okra, and buttermilk hot wings, all £5. The mains are served with two sides, all for £10. I had the buttermilk fried chicken which was truly the crispiest most succulent bit of chicken I've ever had. It was served with a lip tinglingly spicy mango chutney, coleslaw, and a lime wedge. I had two carbtastic sides with mine though one would've been plenty for all but the most ravenous. The sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had, golden and crisp on the outside, sweet and soft on the inside. My other side of mac'n'cheese was a meal in itself - al dente large pasta tubes (maybe gomiti - there are too many pasta names to know them all) lightly coated in a rich cheese sauce topped with smoked paprika. If that lot won't sort a hangover out, nothing will. The other main we tried was cola cooked pulled beef brisket on a brioche bun. The sweet savoury flavour of the meat was delicious with the spicy fruit chutney and cool coleslaw. If you're hungry after all that lot then they offer some desserts including Mississippi mud pie, or blueberry pancakes - all a fiver. For £20 here you can have three courses of great quality tasty grub. I'm not really sure how places like Five Guys can be busy when this superb offering is just 5 minutes away. Arrived at roughly 10PM with 5 other people, who were my brother with his girlfriend, sister with her boyfriend and my cousin with his girlfriend. 4 of them went in while me and my cousin went to get some money out from a shop which is two doors away. on our return we were not allowed entry. both of us assumed that this was because there was too many people already in the place, however this was not my case, as my brother had enquired about why we were refused entry, to which he was told that there was too many guys in and would only be allowing girls in until the numbers evened themselves. Upon learning this my brother was able to convince them to let us in, since we had travelled as a family who were mostly already inside. While inside service was the standard and prices were decent, bar staff were friendly and the place had a good atmosphere. The toilets unfortunately not the easiest to get to, as it was downstairs in the middle of a busy room right next to the bar. The music being played was great, a mixture of 70's 80's 90's 00's with indie. pop and rock classics. Overall the evening was a good night but we could not get over the fact that we were originally refused entry, and because of that I wouldn't recommend this place to my friends if they wanted a night out read more

Staff are a bit too cool for school, sometimes verging on unfriendly - get over it you're a barman, but the selection of drinks is great - nice seating upstairs, DJ's on busy nights, big TV, great atmos most nights. Local and upcoming bands down stairs - used to do acoustic nights on sundays down there but not sure if that still happens. Can smoke outside, next to subway so always good for a mid pint sarnie. Stopped in the Sunflower in early November to meet up with a friend before a show at the Academy. Stopped in for a pint and didn't expect to find food there. Someone at the bar had recommended the food, so I took a look at the menu. Southern style cooking, Cajun, actually was the fare. I was skeptical, since my experience here is that restaurants like to put an English twist to the cooking that usually doesn't work. A great bar in town that has some good bands playing there. I also have really liked all their kitchen takeovers that have lasted serval months etc. Especially pietanic, their pies are really tasty! read more
