I needed new running shoes. I felt that being a reviewer, I shouldn't just head off to my normal shop, but should try somewhere else. So I did a search for Sweatshop on Qype and came up with this as my nearest branch.
Sweatshop has a good reputation as a supplier of running shoes. For example the Harrods branch, which apparently has video technology to properly assess your gait etc. Unfortunately I have an unerring ability to find the branches that are not like that. I find the little hole in the wall branches. The wall being in some fitness club somewhere. Yes folks, when I made my way to the correct address, I found myself facing not Sweatshop, but a Virgin Health Club. I actually had to see reception, sign a visitor book and walk through the health club to get to Sweatshop
It turns out to be a small shop within the club. There seemed to be a fair range of stuff (clothing, energy drinks etc), but only a small shelf of shoes. And it quickly became clear that the assistant did not know about different types of running shoes. Some were on special offer, but not my kind, so I headed off to my usual shop
Sweatshop does have its advantages. I have previously got some shoes from a discontinued line at a massively reduced price, and they went to the trouble of bringing my size from another store for me. That was at another branch in a gym (though in the entrance hall which made it a little easier to visit!). I'll have to check if that branch is still open.
So they are great for a bargain if you know what you want. They are great for other sports supplies. And major branches like the Harrods's one are apparently good for getting properly fitted. But be wary if you need new running shoes and aren't sure what you want, small branches like this are definitely not set up to help you out. read more
