Bains sweet shop isn't expensive and the owner John is such a lovely man, he is so charismatic, passionate and takes the time to chat and pass on his knowledge of making Tablet. He even went the extra mile and sent me the recipe which is amazing! I plan to make it with my niece and hope it turns out half as good as Bains tablet. The kids love it, I love it and I will be stocking up on treats for xmas or buying gift vouchers for a later date. I highly recommend visiting and don't worry if you can't get to the shop you can always order online and buy some of those old favourites from your childhood as a gift for yourself or for someone else you know who has a sweet tooth. I used to work in an old fashioned candy shop (yes it was the best job ever and I could eat all the sweets I wanted) and these songs were played on rotation. It drove me nuts. Anyway, Sugar Candy Mountain, bang on the centre of the affluent suburb of Milngavie, sells all the old fashioned sweets from your childhood in the original jars stacked on shelves around the shop. I agree with the previous reviewers points that the new trend for retro shops has resulted in some overstyled twee places. However, I really don't think Sugar Candy Mountain falls into that same irritating bracket. When I visited yesterday, schoolchildren were gathered round the sweets asking the prices excitedly and an elderly woman was sitting at the counter, enjoying a cup of tea with the owner. It appeared to be a meeting place for the community, not just kitsch place for faux bohemians to spend £2 on half a bar of macaroon (a similar west end establishment springs to mind here). And that's can't be a bad thing can it?

Overstocked, over priced and I walked out without buying anything because like I told my boyfriend- there's nothing I miss that much from the states that would bring me to pay as much as they ask for in these shops. (Especially when shops like Poundland and TK Maxx have started stocking a few American goodies!) My family is visiting this summer, so I'll ask them to bring a few of my favourites with them. Lickety Splits definitely has a lot more character than most and if it's wedding favours, gifts, childrens party bags or just some sweets for yourself you don't have to look any further. It's a really nice idea for wedding favours and all you need to do is choose what kind of sweets it is you're after and Lickety Splits will gift wrap everything into little favours, very cute. The decor is gorgeous with wooden flooring, quirky tables and polka dot patterns, it's very bright and airy and all the sweets are organised in glass tubs on fresh white painted shelves. My favourite sweeties have to be the little chocolate cups they're so addictive and moreish. I only found out about this place last week but I think I'll be popping in quite a bit now I know it's there, I could go for some fried eggs just now actually.

The lady in the shop was very knowledgable about her stock. She was able to match people with their local sweets and talk a lot about the changes sweets have gone through over the years (no more cocaine on our sweeties!!). The gallery/gift shop area was a nice little browse too. The shop is very small so our group of 10 was a bit squashed when some other shoppers arrived. The shop is dog friendly and had some water and food outside for any visiting pooches!

It advertises it's presence with one of those bright pink neon signs, shaped into a sweet. What can I say? It worked for me. Sweet Dreams is more of an alcove than a shop really, but is nevertheless stacked full with jars containing probably pretty much every type of sweet that you can think of. You'll also find such delights as gingerbread houses and candy canes. Yum. The lady that works there is friendly and helpful - without jumping down your throat too much. She gave us plenty of time to choose what we wanted (it's difficult when there is so much to choose from!) and when we'd finally made up our minds, we found that it was pretty well priced as well. Here's the silver medal. Gold medal goes to Metro Dhaba in Gaithersburg, MD, US. The jalebis here are very sweet, and on a scale of 1 to 10, with a 1 being softer than a high school white boy on the cross country team, and a 10 being harder than Walid, I assign the crunch level an 8. Pretty solid. Every jalebi is different. These were thin and sticky (not a bad thing at all). Jalebis go for 5 pounds per kilo (for the Americans, the June 5, 2016 equivalent is $3.30 per lb). I am very satisfied with my jalebi journey. I had to take an Uber here from my swank apartment north of the river. This shop is in the further south region. I highly recommend the gulab jamun. It's easily the world's greatest! Gold medal. There ya go, everybody wins! Very sweet customer service. They know I love jalebis.

It satisfies Captain Commando's rule #1 of ethnic eating: "For an ethnic restaurant to be any good, its clientele must be largely from the same ethnic background." So says an 'ethnik' married to another 'ethnik' with lots of 'ethnik' friends. This is not a restaurant, more a shop, but the rule holds. I go there for the lamb samosas: spicy lamb mince studded with peas, wrapped in pastry and deep fried to a golden brown deliciousness. Slather with accompanying 'yoghurt' and 'red' (read hot) sauce and consume. You can eat it on site (there is a teensy eating area) but why not take it home where you can eat it with your hands? The way it should be eaten. Mmwarrh! The sweets are authentic, that is, very sweet. I'm an atypical 'ethnik': I hate Indian sweets. But, if they're your thing, take your pick. They've got all the familiar favourites including ras malai and gulab jamuns. Service is offhand and occasionally they give you back more money than you gave them but hey I'm not planning to live there.

I bought Minced Beef,Stewing Steak breakfast stuff and a Silverside Joint. With the breakfast stuff I got thick potato scones from A & A Bakers they are very scrummy. So this weekend we had Bolognese with Linguine, a Red wine casserole and today a very good Roast Beef Dinner although I say it myself. My two offspring actually commented that it was the best beef joint I had ever cooked praise indeed, I did leave the beef rarer that I normally would it was delicious and melt in the mouth. I definetly think that meat from the butcher is tastier than Supermarkets.
