I had such a great time yesterday. I like living in San Francisco not just for the micro climate but also because a few blocks down the street is like me going into a different village/township from the boring suburbia. Hayes/Hayes Valley just has just my favorite gypsy vibe. And Sword & Roses is just a historical representation of this 60s/70s SF lifestyle. I had a much needed concern coupled with recent tragic fire in HK (where my parents are. They don't live in the incident apt complex but still dark mood all over b/c of the bad news) that need addressing and spending a few hours at the shoppe just rejuvenated me. Yes, this is not a shoppe where you browse quick and rush out, I would avoid that if that is your plan cos you could meddle up the peace and flow of things there, j/k. Everywhere you turn, you will find gems literally in the shoppe. I couldn't take pics of the shine to show you out of respect but the place is always warm because shoppe owner heats up the chimney with more wood. This is a tiny little space but you could spend hours or up browsing through every inch and many actually do, taking their time when time in SF is worth a lot. I love the garden, the customers and the ladies who upkeep the shoppe. You will not come in and find this place boring! There is always conversations about meaning of life, spirituality, animal guides, tarot cards, astrology and palm readings. Someone will be searching through books to find their childhood treasure again or getting recycled leather bound journals for their out of town friends as a keepsake. Possibilities are endless, as endless as your openness to alternative healing and spiritual solutions. I brought some incense too (not in the pic) but it has the most gorgeous and tranquil blue that even not burning them (putting out in display immensely) enhance my spirit, my mood and my well being. I got instructions about what to do with the ashes too. Many came from out of town or just across the bay! I recommend stopping by to say "hi" to the friendly ladies or the shoppe owner, they are always up for a good chat and just so open and welcoming, I bet they get asked all sort of life questions so you won't shock them with your challenge. Bottom line, this is a cute, lovely, back shoppe filled with loads of SF histories, good times bad times, and foot prints of some unique souls, some beautiful, some odd and some stranger than old wives' tales. P.S. I will update my reading as time passes with realization of actual events. But maybe I will not, let the bygones be the bygones! Will see. read more

What a magical find! My friend introduced me to this spiritual and metaphysical store and I fell in love with it. The store is hidden behind another house. It has a lovely little courtyard where the front store is located. Once you go inside, you're immediately in another world, filled with crystals, tarot cards, incense, oils, large array of spiritual books. It's not big inside but they packed a lot in, including 3 beautiful alters (that you can't take photos of) and places for divinational readings. When I was inside, a couple customers came in and asked for readings, which, the only person working the store, also does readings. The readings are not private so i could hear everything while I was browsing, which I didn't mind. There was so much to look at that I could have hung out for an entire day. This was my second time in the store and I picked up some crystals that I was attracted to and browse the million of Tarot cards that they have because I wanted a new deck. I also bought 2 books and another Egyptian deity figurine. Last time, I picked up some incense and they sell them in powder instead of the traditional cone or sticks. The powder incense has no binders or fillers, so it's only pure ingredients that is easily lit with a match. I bought a shell from the store where I can pour some powder out and light it. It burnt great and smelled wonderful. The gal in the store helped me pick one based on my spiritual needs. It was my first time so I'm not sure how well I can rate it but the cards seemed to align with my life at the moment. I'd been meaning to stop in here for a long time and finally got the chance to today. The shop is super hidden and almost easy to miss. However, the magical energy around the store is entirely tangible (I could sense it from outdoors before I actually found the entrance). There are some really neat spiritual artifacts, books, and tools for your practice. Definitely worth checking out! My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that the person working the store was also in the middle of a Tarot reading when I walked up to the half-door in front of the store. It seemed as though I'd interrupted something. While I was browsing the store, I could sense the person getting their reading wanted some privacy (understandably). I'm sure the reading was great-- but I might suggest a "please be quiet, in the middle of a reading" sign or something along those lines. :-) read more

I found this little gem while I was walking down Carl street about 9 years ago, I was immediately entranced and intrigued when I saw that is was almost hidden. It added that extra mystery i needed to go in. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by an undeniable ambiance. All the many beautiful incense & oils they have not only on display, but for sale as well, all smell and look so amazing! My personal favorite is Lilith & 6 Grandfather's. Spiritual store is one of my favorite type of shop because I would like to have my own when I am rich and free. I am a spiritual shop guru. The Sword and Rose is inside a garage so the entrance is hiding. It's a very cute concept but since it's the entrance of garage. Some big trash cans were blocking the way and we had to pass through some flies which wasn't very pleasant. The garden is small but cute. The shop itself is tiny too. The day we visited was very crowded. If one person was standing at the counter basically nobody could go through. I like their wands and store decoration. The general atmosphere feels like we are in a movie theme. I myself are playing around witchcrafts for over 10 years. But I never consider bring my hobbies to a real business. Actually it's because I don't know how to set the price. But after visiting this shop was a mind opening experiences. Their price is extremely high! You don't have much privacy when you are doing tarot reading but I heard from other customers. The session was like $80 . Another customer was buying small bottle of fragrance. 0.5 ml for $25 something like that! All these years I was just doing for tips that's why I am poor and misery. But actually you could consider tarot reading is like a more affordable psychiatrist therapy. If you think that way $80 for a session is fair. Positive energy is not cheap. That's what I learned from this store. This store is very good at created the atmosphere. If you couldn't afford going to Universal Harry Potter theme park. This place will be a good option too. And their price will seem more reasonable if you look that way. I rated it 4/5. But I had to take 0.5 out because those trash cans in front of the entrances really bothered me. That's not how a dream land entrance supposed to look like. Without those trash cans I can even rate this place 5/5 no problems. read more

The vibes of this place are immaculate. A spiritual sanctuary tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Cole street. The little garden out front is so lovely and has such tranquil spiritual energy. You can definitely sense a shift when walking into the establishment - very mystical and sacred. There's a lovely selection of cards, crystals, and an even more incredible array of hand crafted incense and oils. The quality of these is next level! I ended up getting some of their rose oil (I recommend giving this a smell whether you're looking to buy it or not!! It is DIVINE) and some incense. The woman working the counter was very sweet and knowledgable and was able to describe and recommend all sorts of different incenses they carried depending on what effects/uses we were going for. I loved 6 Grandfathers, Marah, and Mystic Master. The smells are amazing - whatever magic and care they put into crafting these will teleport you to another state of being. It blows regular stick incense out of the water. Will 100% be back to collect more scents! Thank you for a lovely experience. Tarot reading: I had a Tarot reading with Patrick and it was an incredible experience. He used his Native American Animal deck, and was able to convey a lot of insight through each card/draw. Tarot readings at The Sword and Rose are very organic conversations that lead to the core/root of what one is truly searching for in the Tarot reading. I've had other Tarot readings before, and I really appreciate the structure of this: generally 45min reading with no timer (meaning it could go on / last longer, depending on the conversation), a cash payment on a sliding scale of $40 - $100 (you pick the price based off of what you took away from the reading), AND sometimes some incense chosen specifically for your needs based off of your reading. Would highly recommend. Incense: Wow. This shop has the best selection of incense around. I have gotten two: Caravan and Bastet, and really enjoy them. Each incense has its own character, spiritually and emotionally. The staff at The Sword and Rose are very knowledgable about which incense brings out which emotions/effects/etc. Crystals: I'm a gem collector and love to meditate with my crystal collection. The Sword and Rose does have a solid selection of crystals. However, compared to say...the Love of Ganesha, Twisted Thistle Apothecaire, and other metaphysical shops, their prices are relatively on the higher end. However, the collection of neck pieces / accessories / wands found at The Sword and Rose cannot be beat. read more

This is a magical hobit hole where you can buy crystals, jewelry, house made delicious incense as well as get a reading. I got a reading from a sweet woman whose name I have forgotten. She had curly long black hair and was quite compassionate. I have had many readings in my life, varying from excellent to con artist. She gave me what I would classify as a generous, solid reading.
