Very disappointing visit to this restaurant. Stopped today for lunch with a friend. The staff was Hispanic, so I though I was going to be in for an authentic treat. But, alas I was wrong again. We were directed to a wall with photos of what they offered on the menu. I decided on the lunch special, which was a burrito for $6.95. It came with tortilla chips. My burrito was very small, tasty , but disappointing in size. The burrito was accompanied by 6, yes 6 chips and some nebulous SAMs Club powdered cheese sauce. My companion had a chicken taco salad which was small, barely had cheese , small shreds of chicken and skimpy tomato portion. WTF?...rice, tortillas, and beans are cheap. We wound up spending $20 on lunch and left hungry. I weep when I think of the monster burritos one can get in CA for the same price. Not recommended, I doubt this business will survive. read more

Really good food if you're looking for a quick bite! Hot sauce was definitely hot (which I really appreciated). Rice was really good on its own, but It was even better when fresh lime juice was squeezed over it so I'd definitely recommend. Restaurant had. Bright, fun atmosphere. I had the beef tacos and they were really good. The person I went with described it: "as fast as a McDonalds but about 1000x faster." We're currently on a road trip so it was the perfect place for us to stop. Strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone who, like us, was just passing through. read more

I was traveling on I-90 at supper time and craving Mexican food. I found this place on Yelp and decided to stop. You order at the counter and then get called up when your food is ready. You can add onions, jalapeños, pico, and salsa from bowls on the counter. We ordered a burrito that came with chips covered in nacho cheese sauce and a spicy chicken enchilada that came with rice and beans. Both were fine but not special. The chicken was good, but the sauce was boring. Perhaps other items on the menu are better. Portions were adequate. Cost was $21 for 2. We were passing through town and saw "authentic Mexican food" on the sign. My friend ordered the chimichanga and I ordered 2 shredded beef tacos. My food was not hot and was very bland. My friend said her chimichanga was hard on bottom. The cheese on her chips was very watery and didn't taste like cheese. I have been to authentic Mexican restaurants in Mexico and in the states and this was definitely not like any authentic Mexican food I have ever had. At the very best you'd have to call this OK American Mexican. My lunch special of an enchilada, tostada, rice and beans and a Jaritos was $12 so it's not particularly cheap. The lettuce was standard bag lettuce. The chicken was a bit slimy, the corn tortillas basic factory fare. Having had the beef which is standard ground beef I'm somewhat at a loss...I guess I'd go for cheese and onion enchiladas if I needed to stop here. The downtown location is no longer open on SAT or SUN. If you're expecting authentic Mexican this is not the place. If you want to go cheap, also not authentic Mexican, Taco John is just down the street. Casa Zamora, more authentic, is also about 1/2 mile east. It is relatively fast service. read more

Stopped while road tripping to Wisconsin Dells and we're greatly surprised! Expecting fast food type Mexican due to the location and were so happy to discover otherwise! A quaint little Mexican lunch/dinner spot. I'm not sure whether she was an owner or just an employee but one of the women who served me was so kind and friendly. Even though they were busy she still made a point to come to my table and check to see that I was enjoying my fajitas. The fajitas were great and the portion size is fair for the price, which was reasonable. They also had cilantro onions on the condiment bar which I love and not all Mexican joints have. I was skeptical visiting the "second" store. We have always enjoyed their uptown location, so decided to try it. This location feels more like a restaurant where the uptown business is more of a cafe. But the food was just as delicious! (You know the kinda food where you forget to talk to whoever your with) And super surprise bonus for my husband...this local has beer! Love the staff and the motif is great. I grew up in Albert Lea and I remember when The Taco King was just a taco truck. Then I remember when it opened up downtown. Then I remember when they opened a second location out by the Wal Mart that looks almost exactly (and eerily) like their downtown location on the inside. I cannot stress enough how great and quick this Mexican food is. I've been eating the Supreme Burrito as often as I'm back home now for upwards of 14 years and I don't plan to stop any time soon. The Taco King himself is always making the food in back, his wife is always working the front of the house, and they are just about the most friendly business/restaurant owners you'll come across. Sometimes I'll order a taco to eat on the side with my Supreme Burrito if I'm feeling crazy. I also like that they offer self-serve pico de gallo and olives and onions and cilantro and hot sauce--these options afford me the luxury of doctoring up that perfect food to my personal spice preference. The road between DesMoines and Minneapolis is a barren fast food land I have driven hundreds of times. Finding Taco King 2 was life me stumbling into an oasis in the desert.
