The food was surprisingly good for a Mexican restaurant in Minnesota! The Dill pickle was a little weird, but I support creativity. The service was very disappointing. I asked why the Despertar came with TWO eggs instead of THREE as the menu promised (I think that I was shorted a tortilla as well.) The server, Edy, ignored the question. Later, when I asked what the "Service Fee" was. Again, my question was ignored. Finally, the prices are almost 50% higher than shown on the El Patron website. El Patron has a lot going for it. Very good food with a notable variety. The ambiance is average but acceptable. The online pricing seriously needs updating. And, Edy, needs a Customer Service refresher course. What a great surprise this place was. It was clean, updated, has a big menu and really good service. We stopped in for lunch, it was only a mile off of I90, and managed to get in and out in an hour. My wife had chicken and rice that was not over cooked and not greasy... It was delicious. I ordered the tacos carne asada and really enjoyed them. Spicy, not greasy and fresh. So they state they open at 11:00 . Walked in at 11:08 and asked if they were open. A man with glasses rolled his eyes and wouldn't acknowledge us, so I asked again (me still being nice ) again nothing , so I ask again, and he said WAIT A MINUTE! We're from Southern California, and we decided to test out the Mexican food in Minnesota. Our friends who are locals recommended El Patron. We had chili Colorado and carnitas. We also ordered guacamole, the chopped one with pico de gallo. I had the El Jeffe margarita. The food was very flavorful. The carnitas were crispy on the ends and tasted the best I ever had. The margarita was absolutely delicious! I would definitely recommend this restaurant that is so far from Mexico! read more

My husband is very hard to please when it comes to food at restaurants. We were very impressed with the quality, the amount of guac/queso and other fixing that came with the Los Socios burritos. The Mexican sausage and mushroom combined with a "classic" burrito flavor was a great twist! We also got the shrimp tacos which were awesome! Terrible experience last night when we went for a late dinner. There was some sort of bug in my $8 margarita. The new fajita dish served in a cast iron cauldron lacked any form of meat. It was mainly onions and peppers. As a regular of this restaurant, I am extremely disappointed and dissatisfied to see it go down hill. The service was mediocre at best. Our server spent more time talking to the other staff than being attentive to our table. The owner seems detached from the actual customer experience. I used to think this restaurant was better than El Mar as far as cleanliness and quality, but I'm beginning to think otherwise. I will not be going back. read more

In Austin, MN for a family funeral service, we came across a familiar small town visit dilemma: finding a restaurant for dietary restrictions. Mexican food is always a standby for my dad who is pescatarian and gluten free and my mom and I who are vegetarians, but we know from experience you can't always count on a truly tasty and satisfying meal when there aren't many options. El Patron was a lifesaver when it came to our dietary needs and a surprise superstar establishment with stellar guacamole! Their freshly chopped, extra-chunky guacamole was the best we'd ever had in a restaurant and my mom has vowed to adopt it for her own meals. The food was delicious, the price was right, the margaritas were fabulous. We had a lovely time with a great server and went to bed well nourished before a tough day of funeral services. This is my favorite place to eat in Austin. The food is amazing. I usually get the chicken chimichanga. It is absolutely great! The workers are always super nice even though I usually bring in my tornado of a son. I can usually get in and out of El Petron in about 30 minutes. They are ridiculously fast in coming and taking your order and then boom it's right in front of you. The prices are really affordable, especially their lunch menu. Pretty big menu for a strip mall restaurant. Went on Father's Day night and it was pretty crowded. Service was attentive, food came out promptly and it was pretty good. I had Chile Colorado and my wife had enchiladas. We lived in San Antonio for a long time, so its not quite there yet, but still really good and worth trying. read more

The enchiladas were bland and the chicken was so overcooked that a knife was useless in cutting through it unless excess pressure was applied. My partners three corn tortillas were a step above in quality over my food but still not worth the menu price point. Are you looking for a place to go out to eat at? El Patron Mexican Grill is the place to go! Every time i go in there i leave with a smile on my face. The home made chips and salsa come to the table hot. They are so good that i eat a basket of them while im looking over the menu. Witch by the way has every thing you could be craving in the Mexican food world on it. I ordered the cheese stake burrito. It was as big as my plate. I could only eat 1/2 of it. But, oh so good! The stake was cooked perfect and a bountiful amount of it was stuffed in side a flower tortilla, covered in white creamy cheese sauce. Also served with beans, and rice all for just $8.99. It was so good! I ordered a side of lettuce and tomato. Our server was so on the ball that, i got them with in 5 seconds of ordering them. He was very polite and came back to the table many times to make sure we were happy. The home made Margaritas were wonderful! A 16 oz Strawberry one was only $4.99. They have a 44oz one called the monster for $11.50. Worth every cent im sure. But, i didnt get that. Maybe next time. ;-) A big glass of soda was only $1.80. with free refills! I asked our server if i could take a basket of chips and salsa home with me and he brought me the to go containers to put it in as well as more chips. And did not charge us for them. I must say, this is the only place ive eaten i a LONG time that, i didnt have one thing to complain about at all! I even told the manager on the way out just how much i enjoyed my visit! El Patron is my favorite Mexican restaurant.....For a small town in southern MN! The chips are always hot, with the yummiest pico de gallo and even some ranch for those of us who don't enjoy so much spice all the time. They are always willing to substitute your refried beans (I have texture issues with them) for whatever you want (usually I just pick rice). Always friendly staff and willing to make your experience a good one. Sometimes the burritos can be kind of "blah" on the inside, but that's all I have to say for bad things. I like this place way better than El Mariachi's downtown. This place is family owned, and the price is not outrageous. :) read more

I have lived in Austin for over 12 years and had only been used to the one other Mexican restaurant in town. When this place opened I was excited to try it. Being Hispanic and having experienced all the good food as a kid, I'm always on the look out for some good comfort Mexican dishes. I have been here about 10 times and have tried a variety of their dishes. I can regretfully say I am disappointed. I just feel like something is missing. Their salsa is good but the thin dried out chips don't help. I don't taste any flavor on their beef, their chicken is sometimes tough and tastes like they purposely wanted to just make it spicy. The one good thing I will recommend is their fajitas! The steak was cooked perfectly, and the side dishes complemented each other quite nicely. The reason I will be back is their competitive prices, and what I consider the best fajitas in town. Hopefully with time they will find an identity. read more
