Love at first lick…read more Whoever said money can't buy happiness must have never tasted gelato from Grom. Simply put, Grom has the best gelato. Yes, it's a chain, but it's a chain for a reason: They produce a high quality product that has people coming back for more. I am one of these people. I can't decide if having a Grom a thirty second walk away from where I spend eight hours a day, five days a week is a blessing or a curse. Grom is addicting. The flavors are rotated each month, so there is usually something new to try. (Unless you're me, who used to go every day until my roommates imposed an "every other day" limit.) My favorite is definitely the tiramisu. I prefer it over traditional tiramisu. I love the huge chunks of lady fingers wedged into the creamiest gelato I've ever tasted. And if the gelato wasn't rich enough already, you can pay a mere 50 cents to have the thickest whipped cream added to the top. I'll admit, the gelato at Grom is the most expensive I've seen at 2.50 for a small cone, but it's worth it. There are a few Grom locations in Turin and this is the closest one to Porta Nuova. Even if you are passing through Turin, run to Grom and grab a cone! No regrets, I swear!

I actually ate at two different Grom locations and despite the "chain", the gelato is about the best I have ever tasted. Each container is very small so you know its fresh, not these huge vats...I tried the extra dark chocolate, pistachio, and crema de Grom..wowza, fantastic. We spent a little time speaking with the owner who is from Germany and moved to Turin in her 20's with her (then) career. In time she decided opening a German deli was for her. She's a very lovely woman who gave us a warm, cheerful welcome and speaks four languages! When you walk through the door 'you are in Germany' so there is no 'spritz' here for aperitivo. Instead get a German alternative liqueur, wine (sparkling if you like) or beer and purchase a snack from the deli case to enjoy with friends for aperitivo. Located off the pedestrian zone, it was a nice quiet spot. There are a few tables out front with umbrellas plus there is garden seating out back and seating inside if you prefer. The shelves are stocked with all types of German food to take home and prepare yourself or choose from the large selection of prepared food items in the deli case. Many types of salad, several kinds of potato salad plus other potato dishes, several types of brots and deserts. If you don't have time to sit and eat here, take out is available. I ordered a white wine and was given a lovely, slightly sweet white that was just right. My fave got himself a 'red beer' from several options available. Of course he got a brot with saurkraut and I selected three of the salads in the deli case. We were very full and the prices for both food and beverage are great. We are so happy to find a little bit of Germany in Turin. If you are in the area stop by for lunch, a snack, or get some 'take out' German style.
