Every time I go there I usually manage to find and buy a vintage cookery book. I have now four cookery books, they were published between 1911 and 1970. On Upper Gardner Street there is also a very big two storey antique shops which I really like: North Laine Antique & Fleamarket, it is the perfect place to find old fashioned plates and cups of tea for example.

The scent (of most) of the candles is gorgeous and lasts for a very long time. I have had one of their big candles and burnt it regularly for hours at a time and it has lasted for at least 8 months. The shop has a 'scent of the month' and this is always at a 25% discount. If you belong to their loyalty scheme you get invited to events at the shop. Although the candles seem initially expensive they are good value for money as they last such a long time.

My partner and I stopped by here on a Sunday morning for a coffee break and we sat on the unique garden patio just outside the cafe. They provide books, newspapers and games here to pass time while enjoying a drink. I noticed that they also had a retro video game on the side for customers to play with if interested. We ordered a Mocha and an Americano which was decent and did the job to energise us for the rest of the day. Might try and come back here to check out the vintage shop during the week as they were closed on Sunday.

It was fairly quiet, I always get the impression from when I've walked past before that most of the customers work at Amex as it's literally across the road from their office. I asked for a coffee to have in and was given a take away cup which was annoying as I'm a glass snob and if I'm sitting in then I would like a 'sit in' mug please the same as everyone else that was seated. It took me ages to get served at the till point whilst the lady had a long chat across the counter with a customer that was sat down at a table. How nice. After a little loud huff I got served and to be fair the lady was super friendly from then on, complimenting me on my jacket and haircut etc. Yes, flattery usually gets you everywhere but sadly will only get you 2 stars this time. 1 star for the friendly service (eventually) although could have been much quicker! and 2 because...erm...you are a 5 minute walk from my house!? Er, yeah....that. The coffee didn't taste very nice I left half of it and the lid wasn't on properly and it spilt down my white jacket as I walked over to a table. (I am spoilt by the Red Roaster and Coffee @ 33 so have reasonably high expectations from a independent coffee shop in Brighton). It wasn't amazing, but it was definitely OK. The cool thing is that Frankie's Grinder is clearly related to the Frankie's sandwich place next door, so there's a selection of very nice freshly made sandwiches that you can grab with your latte. We were using the coffeeshop as an informal meeting stop, and I think we might have overstayed our welcome a little bit, having been there for over an hour, but it was hardly busting at the seams so hey ho. That said, the stools and bar that runs around the edge were comfortable enough for the time we were there, but this isn't a loungey big comfortable chairs space - I think it has been designed to be more of a quick chat or grab 'n' go joint for the massed AmEx people just up the road. I love love love Frankie's sandwiches from their packed, bustling shop next door, so I hope this works out for them. On my first visit, I think it will but not without a bit of time and experience to bump up the quality.

The Tea Parlour is accessible from the shop and it's a pretty room with probably no more than 10 tables. Service is pleasant and the tea service is very good with a large selection of blends a variety of cakes, scones and so on. I was there for lunch and had an excellent Ploughman's served with warm bread and some great chutney.

There are other tea shops in Hampshire that use loose leaf teas, have a much wider selection of food and cakes and use a jam that tastes home made. Very disappointing.
