Classic British pub experience. We sampled the fish & chips, sausages and mash, a salad and a few pints. All of the food was hearty, classic, and very tasty. The atmosphere is really pleasant on a nice summer evening, with ample space out front but also several dining areas with open air feel with windows open and fans whirling. The building is very classic, but not dusty and dingy. There was a mix of families and young professionals. The servers were attentive and very accommodating of kids. read more

On our London trip, we wanted to try out a classic Sunday Roast. And because of the area we were staying in, we wanted to try one of the more high-end Sunday roasts offered at The Thomas Cubitt Belgravia. We ordered the crispy squid to start, which was a little underwhelming because of the portion size. My brother ordered the burger with pancetta, and he said it was really good, but there was lacking a pancetta flavor in the burger. The chips were nice and crispy tho! The Sunday roast was really good, the vegetables were super tender and the roast was cooked perfectly. You can put the gravy that it was served with in almost anything and it would be amazing! I'm still a little confused about the Yorkshire pudding, as this was my first time ever having it, so maybe I need to try it at different places. It was super crispy and a little tough to eat. During our week in London last summer, we had a nice dinner here with the family. I'm no expert but this is what I pictured as upscale British food. We walked in and headed upstairs to the dining room, which was fully seated but still not very loud. We had split pea soup, an assortment of Sunday roasts (with a Yorkshire pudding), fish and chips (a large single piece of fish)...and the kids ordered a burger with lettuce and tomato on the side. I like to think that I've matured enough as a parent to let the kids order whatever they want to have the best chance of them actually eating it and finishing it and never mind that we made them fly over 5,000 miles to have them experience life in another country. Wait, what were we talking about? Everything was great (even the burger). For dessert I was not able to resist the temptation of carrot cake, which was beautiful and deliciously moist. We came here for lunch at 12p on Sunday without a reservation and really lucked out that they were able to seat us. This place is so lovely. We were seated on the second floor in a room all by ourselves. It felt like we were at home. The server was friendly, warm and cheery. She was attentive and quick. She offered some lovely drink and food options that were loved by all. My son enjoyed his burger and chips, my daughter had the kids roast and loved it, esp w the extra gravy. My husband had the roast and he couldn't stop raving. I had the half chicken and it was cooked to perfection, crispy skin with juicy and tender meat. The parsnips and carrots were outstanding pairings. I also had potatoes but was just too full to try them. We did order the cheesy cauliflower, which should be a must. The entire meal was scrumptious. We highly recommend it. Please do make a resy or at least call ahead. read more

First recommendation - don't go here before noon. I don't know why this place was open but as I wandered the street I saw that this very inviting restaurant was open. The doors were pulled back, there were flowers in the entrance, and menus on the tables. Has the waitress simply said we only serve water, soda, and tea before noon I would have turned away. But she waited for us to order before stating everything we ordered was unavailable. We should have left then but we stayed for tea. After that our waitress stayed out of sight around the corner never checking in on us for the duration. We had one cup of tea and a bottle of still water. Please understand this is one of these glass bottles that they fill from the tap. It costs £2 for that bottle. I would have gone without had I known it would have been that much. Then we had to flag someone down to track our waitress so we could pay. It took some time despite the fact we could see her for her to muster up the energy to close our bill. I came here this past weekend. I ordered pan-fried trout and beelicious, a non-alcoholic drink. The beelicious drink was very tasty. You could taste the elderflower and citrus flavors, and it was very refreshing. I love their pan-fried trout. I destroyed the whole plate. It was a nice touch to have brussel sprouts together with trout. You could taste 2 different textures: crunchiness from the sprouts and softness from the fish. The fish was soft and full of umami. Came here for some Sunday grub. Burger with blue cheese was very good. I like that they will cook it to order and have to say they got the medium rare just perfect. Got this with a side of parmesan and garlic fries and was a bit annoyed that the waiter didn't point out that it already came with fries. Who needs two portions of fries?! The fries were average and I would not order the parmesan fries again. My friends duck salad was good. Worth getting although my other friend had lamb Sunday roast and it was definitely the star of the show. I never tried it but it looked great. All in all 4 stars. The ambiance is nice. The food is fine, but nothing super special. Just a good place to have a solid meal. We had the cheddar cauliflower, ultimate Sunday roast and the fish and chips. All was okay, but lacked in seasoning. The service was really really slow. The team apologized, but it was so slow that we finished our bottle of wine before the food even arrived. The wine list was nice and wines were reasonably priced. The upstairs area is decorated well, but the chairs were beat. The cushion sank in really far so I felt the wood on the back of my knees. The bathroom was atrocious. They can do better on keeping it clean. I don't need to go back, but if I were stuck without a reservation it wouldn't be the end of the world to return. read more

Beet salad was a few sad leaves of radicchio, a thimble full of Stilton, 2 pieces of some sort of granola, tasteless pieces of beetroot and no dressing. Chips were a small portion of store bought frozen French fries jammed into a pot. Seriously a 10 year old child could have made a better job of it. 15 quid for the salad - criminal. A whole lotta 'meh'. This place was highly recommended in my guide book, so we gave it a shot this evening on a whim. At the time we stumbled across this place, I happened to be walking around with a piping hot and fresh cup of Starbucks that I had picked up 5 minutes earlier on Buckingham Palace Road. When I got there, I was told they had to ditch it because it wouldn't look nice on the table. There's always a pretty good chance I'll have a cup of coffee in my hand when I'm walking around. And anytime I may have gone into a pub with one, they have never really cared so long as I ordered something. It's not like i was going to come into Thomas Cubitt, drink my Starbucks and go. So what's the problem? Well, they're not really a true pub, are they? It's more of a wannabe upscale place masquerading as a pub. Any true neighborhood pub could care less if you had a cup of coffee so long as you're dropping some Sterling. Guess this place is too fancy for my shenanigans. Heaven forbid someone sees a cup of coffee on the table. Anyway, we got the fish and chips and Diet Coke which came to 20 pounds, not inclusive of a 12.5% tip which they added on. Pretty pricey for what you get. The food was mediocre at best. The chips were a bit on the undercooked side, and the fish was average. As for the service, it was spotty, snobby, and underwhelming. It's also the kind of staff that waits in the shadows ready at any moment to grab your plate and get you out of there as fast as possible. Impatient waitstaff are the worst. Let me enjoy my meal! My seat was a little tight as the tables are laid out quite closely to each other. But I didn't mind. I only care about food. Thomas Cubitt is a great gastro pub that serves great modern British food. The dining bar with warm wooden furniture has abundant of natural light from large windows that look out to Elisabeth Street. I've only eaten downstairs but they also have a formal dining room upstairs for posh people. They have separate menu there. I've only looked at their website but the upstairs room seem a little too formal and stuffy for my taste. Food: I ordered pumpkin, quinoa and green apple salad. The salad was great. Red quinoa and pumpkin add a pleasant texture to the fresh spinach laves. Red cabbage and the yogurt based mustard dressing help combine all the individual ingredients. However, the star of this dish is the green apple. The firm and fresh apples introduce the nature zing and delightful juiciness to this salad. This is a decent-sized gastro-pub in the heart of Belgravia, not far from Victoria station. The interior has been modernised with trendy pale green 'distressed' wooden panelling downstairs, and a more formal dining room upstairs. It's actually one of the better places to drink in the area, though, as others have said, most go there to eat. But it's a good to know place given the dearth of decent drinking venues around Victoria. They have a couple of hand-pumps (one serving nice Deucars) and also serve a Suffolk cider ("cyder") which is very refreshing. Beer is about £3.50 a pint - but, then, you are in Belgravia... On nice days the frontage screens are rolled back and there's a lot of pavement table seating which makes for a nice sunny day venue. There's table service throughout, which can be a bit hit and miss when they're busy, and it does get quite busy at lunchtimes and after work. I've not eaten upstairs, but reports are good: again, eating downstairs in the 'pub' part gets more mixed reviews, particularly about speed of service. But if you've got the time, it's a fairly relaxed venue. read more

We made it a point during our vacation to try some English traditions and chose The Thomas Cubitt for a Sunday roast. Definitely glad we chose this restaurant because both the roast lamb and roast beef were excellent. We sat upstairs and there were only a few other tables being sat so it was nice and quiet, as opposed to downstairs which is much more energetic. I think next time we'd sit downstairs just because the atmosphere was more lively. Both meats were cooked well, though the beef was the better of the two. Fantastically cooked and seasoned very well. The yorkshire pudding, which is actually a popover was amazing as were the roasted vegetables. Total cost for both roasts and four glasses of wine was 71.94. read more

Came here with others for Sunday lunch after an awesome weekend in London. The place is split on two levels. A bar downstairs (which was pretty loud and hectic) and a restaurant upstairs. We had a reservation in the restaurant - thank god we did as there was a long wait! We all went for the Sunday lunch (either pork or beef) which was delicious. I went here on a summery Friday night and the place was packed with post work drinkers, locals, and dogs (and dog blankets and dog bowls). I thought the drinks were overpriced but they do serve Adnams and Aspall's cider so proves popular with both me and the bloke! We stood outside but as it's on the corner of a private mews you have to stand behind a barrier, so you're a bit squished in, and the staff do police the situation. I've been on a Saturday lunch and found the place much more relaxing. We had a relaxed lunch (Ploughmans) and settled down with the papers. If you do have some time to kill around Victoria station i'd recommend here as it's off the commuter and tourist trail. read more

I went with a friend for a quick work lunch today and sat in the window, and although the table was small and it initially looked like we would have hardly any space, we were perfectly comfortable. Couple the surroundings with the impeccable service and within 5 minutes, I'm already thinking about how impressed I am. And then the food came (very swiftly). Honestly, this might be the best burger I've ever tasted, and I've been waiting to say that for more than 20 years. The meat was perfectly cooked. Absolutely perfectly. I can't stress enough how good it was. I felt ever so slightly out of place as I wasn't in work clothes, but that was possibly only in my head as the staff certainly did not make me feel unwelcome, and the prices are on the high side, but these are trifles. The previous two sentences accurately describe my experience at Thomas Cubitt. After a long day of walking and seeing many of the things that London has to offer, I knew that I wanted something highly flavorful, light and at a good price point. I happened upon Thomas Cubitt and it was exactly that. Our order was: - crayfish, avocado and sun-dried tomato salad with yogurt dill dressing - stilton, shallot and fig tart - british cheese board I can't say enough good things about the salad. It was light, highly flavorful and exactly the right amount of food. The tart had a great funk from the cheese which played very well with the sweetness of the shallots. The British Cheese board was really delicious and I think it had a Wensleydale on it. If you're in London, make a stop here. It's an experience. read more

Really nice cocktails, but so expensive that I couldn't really allow myself to get to the level of inebriation that makes me forget how much I hate spending too much time in Belgravia. Would highly recommend the 'Fallen Leaves' cocktail. I also had the fish and chips because I was told it was the best fish and chips ever, and it really wasn't. It was good, but I could have just gone to a chipper and saved about £10, because it wasn't the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. That said, it was pretty high-end fish and chips, for example, they wrapped the lemon in cheesecloth so you wouldn't get any pulp on your fish. Get in early if you want a table, it's big with the apres-work crowd. Good place to go with co-workers, grandmothers, or clients. Avoid if you are a bohemian or enjoy hanging in Camden. read more

It's almost claustrophobic and I began looking for hidden cameras because it felt like a movie set. I wanted to meet a friend near Victoria for a casual lunch on a Saturday. We wandered towards Ebury Street and spotted The Thomas Cubitt on Elizabeth Street. It looked very airy and spacious from the street, so we decided to give it a go. We sat next to the bar in the passageway between the front and the back, but it wasn't crowded or cramped at all. We had a glass skylight above us and the floor to ceiling windows on two sides of the open restaurant let in so much light and a lovely breeze. The menu had so much to choose from that it was hard to make a decision. We both ended up going for the cod special that was served on a couscous and mint salad. I had baked beetroot as a side and my friend had the peas. The cod was delicious, and the salad was perfect. I thought that the beetroot could have been a touch more flavoursome - it comes with horseradish, but even that didn't give quite the kick I was looking for. The cod more than made up for it though. We were cajoled into having pudding and shared the apple and cherry crumble with ginger ice cream. Heavenly concoction! Really lovely. Definitely enough to share too - it was enormous! Truly perfect Sunday roast. It is a tradition I refuse to break when I am in London. I usually go for the pork because the crackling they serve with it is too delicious to pass up. The potatoes are crispy on the outside and fluffy--yet substantial-- on the inside. The veggies are presented beautifully with, what I think, is a buerre monte to add shine and flavor. I request a pot of gravy just for myself to dip my Yorkshire pudding. With a glass of Billecarte-Salmon, I cannot imagine a better way to spend a leisurely Sunday with friends and family. If you're lucky to catch a warm summer day (there are so few of them) the wide open French doors let you enjoy the weather on charming Elizabeth Street. But if the weather is dismal, the cozy pub warms you before your food and drink even arrive. read more

Lunchtime fills up surprisingly quickly, but not uncomfortably so. Service is quick and efficient. Overall prices bring the stars back a few notches. While the burgers were well presented, chips fresh, and steak pie with mushrooms and wine sauce tasty - the burgers or pies were not worth £14. Overall drink prices were a few £ more expensive than at other pubs (though maybe not in Belgravia). There better be fois gras or wagyu beef for those prices. I want to hate this place. And I'm in a get what I want kind of mood. A nice bright airy downstairs brasserie with a restaurant upstairs. plenty of pearls and navy blue roll neck jumpers on show. This place is typical Belgravia. If it wasn't trying so hard I probably wouldn't hate it so much. But it is, and I do. Ubiquitous silver walls, purposefully worn woodwork, elegant flowers. You know the deal. This place SCREAMS 'understated'. All the serving staff are good looking. I don't mind that but I would much prefer to be served by someone ugly who had tasted the dishes on offer. I want food not a lap dance. When one of the party wanted some help in choosing between one dish and another, the waiter shrugged and said he had never tasted either. Gimme an Anne Widdecome or Jeremy Clarkson any day of the week, so long as they can remember what's in the specials without having to refer to their note book 5 times. Normally that sort of thing wouldn't bother me in the slightest but when a place reckons itself so much, why hold back? This lot should just relax. Dole out reasonably priced food in a nice bright room with waiters of all shapes and sizes and faces. Then turn down the shitty 'chill out' music. In fact turn it off. I didn't come here to nod my head and come down. And tell the waiter to stop putting silly coloured dots of sauce on the plate to make it look like haute cuisine. It tastes horrible. The orange gunk that came with my duck was rank. In fact so was the duck. Tougher than Run DMC. And they were tougher than leather. If they did all that, I might come back, and it might get 3 or 4 stars. Because the bread was nice, and my scallop starter was decent too. read more

Went last night with an American friend living here for a while. He knew about my phobia of British restaurants, as I'm visiting from the San Francisco Bay Area - I've had horrid experiences with restaurants in London. We sat downstairs in the bar on a busy Saturday night - they had a few tables available so there was no wait. I would call the service leisurely, but we weren't in a hurry so it fit our mood fine. I had the special pan-fried bream, which came with smoked salmon mashed potatoes, a beurre blanc sauce, and broccolini, along with three shelled mussels distributed on the plate. It was very good! The taste combinations were very nice - not haute cuisine level, more advanced comfort food. Partly this was because, although the bream, smoked salmon, and mussels attempted to create a unifying theme, from that standpoint, though delicious, they were just a bit gimmicky. My friend had a cheeseburger and chips. He originally ordered it with blue cheese, rather than cheddar, but that would have been £3 extra, so he stuck with the basics. It was fine, but nothing to write home about, he said. We finished with their Burnt Orange Marmalade pudding and the apple crumble. Both were very good, plates basically licked clean. Total bill per person, with main, dessert, and two drinks (beer and port for me, two beers for him) was £38. I thought it was high but reasonable. (When in Europe, when something only costs the same in £s as it does in $s at home, I figure it's reasonable.) If we had the same restaurant with the food *I* had in Menlo Park, where I live, I'd go often. Minuses: The servings were a little smaller than I'd like (but on the other hand I didn't leave hungry).
