After doing some research, I decided to give them a call. The person I spoke with, Kathy, was very helpful and explained all of the options available. TVMS teaches to all levels of students- from beginners to advanced musicians. They have a good number of teachers to choose from, and they offer lesson times during the week and on Saturdays. Lessons are given at Connecticut College in the Cummings Art Center. Students have the opportunity to use the College's resources, which include individual practice rooms (all with Steinway grand pianos). TVMS schedules several student recitals during the year where students have the opportunity to play in front of an audience, something that all students need to become comfortable with. The cost for lessons is a bit higher than what you may find on the outside- however, I feel the cost is definitely offset by the quality of the lessons and all of the extras that are available to the student. I highly recommend TVMS for anyone who is searching for a music teacher- especially for those who are more serious in their intent.

My three year old was very excited to sign up for dance class. I researched and found the little…read moremovers class at The Dance Extension and it sounded like it was right up her alley. The description said that if your child hears music and starts to dance to the beat that this is the class for you. Sounded like a great way to introduce little ones to rhythm and dance. I signed my daughter up for a introductory class for $15, received a phone call and confirmation email. We were instructed to get her a pink tutu, pink tights and pink ballet shoes, which I purchased. When we arrived my daughter was so excited, she introduced herself to every child one at a time, I was over the moon to see her so excited. It was her first time doing anything like this, so I expected maybe a bump or two, typical for an excited 3 year old. Once the class started it was going great, my daughter needed a little help with sitting in her assigned spot, she was curious and wanted to look around. This class wasn't for little movers who like moving to the beat, this was a structured ballet class for 3 year olds who were expected to sit and be quiet. At one point one of the younger "helpers" walked my child over to the door, opened it and in front of everyone yelled at her "do you want to leave?!" I heard my child lightly say "no." And the girl yelled "then start listening!" I was appalled and in shock. At first I felt embarrassed that my child was the one struggling with listening. I felt more angry later when I started thinking about the description of this "fun" class for 3 year olds vs. what it actually was. I felt weird about her experience but she kept talking about going to dance class the rest of the week so called to sign her up. I called and emailed several times with no response. I begrudgingly called once more the day before the class was scheduled the following week and I got the instructor Miss Nancy on the phone. We briefly chatted and she told me that I should not sign my daughter up, that preschool would be a better fit for her. But that she would allow us to pay $15 again to take one more trial class and see how it went. She told me she would send another confirmation email, which never arrived. We were blown off because my three year old acted like a 3 year old. She wasn't out of control, she wasnt tantruming or bullying or anything bad. She was exploring the room and not sitting every time they told her to. She didnt understand sitting in a circle and waiting her turn. It was her first class ever, I assumed she would learn those things after a class or two. So be advised, if your child hears music and starts dancing to the beat, this class is NOT for you, despite what their website says. Your child will be yelled at, humiliated and blown off for acting their age.
