At Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, there are several locations where you can volunteer. Just knowing that these families are being helped is a reward with in itself, and I appreciate organizations like this one. I'm going to make a commitment to volunteer more often like I used to in the past. It's been about a few days of volunteering, and I personally love the Young Terrace location. There's enough space to move around, and the guests (community) are grateful and very respectful. I've assisted with stocking and food distribution, but would love to see what's behind the scenes. Overall, if you want to give back to the community and feel amazing, check out a few locations, one may be real close to you. Sidenote: For those picking up food, there is a limit for each food category (canned goods, chicken, eggs, etc). You can have a bag full of produce. Quality is in good condition and some almost going bad, but you choose at your own discretion.

However, I got a group from my daughter's school to volunteer. Once again, everything from beginning to end was organized and social distancing protocols were in place. Highly recommend volunteering at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. It's fun, safe, and helps those less fortunate. Win win!

A cashier assumed another lady donating curtains wanted to give them to me. Cashier rudely interrupted her and said " put those in the donation box you can't give them away. I didn't want the curtains, she was explaining what her mother did to them. Cashier loudly continued yelling how curtains belong to store now. The customer was nervous and embarrassed telling me she didn't want trouble. CHKD thrift stores are for profit. There's non profit thrift stores in Portsmouth that actually help people. .A church thrift store and Oasis thrift store help people from the donations.

We dont put on ares and try to flex to show we better or worse then anyone. We all have flaws we all have issues, one thing i know that is that these people love each other, and they love GOD. Thats all i can ask for. We all are a work in progress. Here, we all grow together- We are a small ministry, but we have a big heart. I know, i know, Church people are crazy. You are right, we all are alittle nuts- we have ways, that to the outside, seem stupid or unnecessary, but our hearts are in the right place. I know i like this place because I can be ME. They are in the business of helping others in need instead of helping themselves to donations. They have a thrift store, they have a weekly food bank and on top of that they serve three meals daily to those that need it. Why anyone would leave less than 5 stars for a place that does so much good is beyond me. I'm sorry that they didn't have your favorite brand of Gucci purse in their shop but just realize that your money spent here is truly going to help people have a meal and feel just a little peace of mind by having some of life's simple necessities.

The landscaping is so nice and the private parking lot is labeled so well. They have marked spaces for volunteers and adopters, it makes you feel good to pull up and look inside. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The kennels are clean an roomy compared to other shelters I have visited. I wish the color of paint on the wall was brighter. Gray is a downer on cement walls and the walk to the kennels is gloomy. Going back soon to visit my potential buddy.

We turned to this humane society because of an ad posted on a website finder of a specific dog. The…read moredog we had adopted from them was older and we had been under the impression that he was in pristine health. (After them giving us a run down of medical history, which wasn't a lot- but them giving us verbal confirmation multiple times that he was healthy, neutered, etc. We also asked more than once to confirm so. ) We had been under the impression nothing was wrong with him. We signed the papers and brought him home. He fit in wonderfully with our family. A little over a week into owning him I took him to the vet and within few minutes of the vet doing a SIMPLE look over, (the same look over any dog is supposed to get when brought to the vet for the first time) she managed to tell me 4 things wrong that were life threatening, 6 in general. I would need to spend 6k, which was JUST the starting price in order to assist these issues. All diseases/physical disorders/potential cancerous tumors were developed well before we brought him into our home. On top of all that, because of all the issues he had, even with the surgeries he would not have a much longer life span. I ended up spending $450 to get him the shots he needed & blood work done and had various other appointments scheduled. Unfortunately, I had to bring the dog back. I completely understand that non-profit organizations, shelters, etc, do the best they can to provide for each animal in their care. Having volunteered at shelters previously and just knowing people in the industry-- within the first few days of receiving the animal they are brought to a vet to be examined. Their goal is to test for heart worms, give the rabies shot, and spay/neuter the animal. However, before ANY of these procedures are done to the animal they examine them. There is no reason that we shouldn't have been informed about these conditions. It was highly,- no. EXTREMELY unprofessional for them to adopt out a dog without telling us the truth about his condition. After grilling them, I was refunded the basic adoption fee. Though, it didn't make anything much better. Im out $500+ and my family & I grew attached to the dog. Also, the receptionist had been very standoffish to us, which from reading other reviews, isn't much of a shocker. All my family & I wanted was to give an animal their forever home and this place turns out to not be the place to go. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE! My family nor I will never be associated with them in the future. I would give them negative stars if I could.
