The Victoria sits in a prime location in the town center of Southport. Facing the lake, pier, theater and arcade the place must attract a lot of tourists. Yet when you step in, at least on a Wednesday evening, you're greeted only with the shuffles and murmurs of half a dozen silent solitary locals arching over their pints in a protective manner.
For a pub that boasts award winning cask ales the decently sized bar only carries a measly three pumps, all with the same beer. Although you can always do what I did and buy a can of Thwaites Mild for little over a quid. That's if the barmaid is in a fit enough state to recognise you, she seemed a little dazed and confused when I was there. Perhaps the sign behind the bar saying 'We Sell Drink, Not Drugs' was a clever red herring.
To it's advantage The Victoria has a massive patio seating area outside, that's built up on layers so no matter where you chose to sit to can happily pass the day by people watching. read more
