I'm so happy my family found this school! This is our first year at the Village Charter School and we love it so much. I love their dedication to multi cultural education and to teaching the kids real life skills that attach their education to real life and help them understand and make sense out of subjects that might otherwise seem pointless and unrelated to themselves. My kindergartener related the waxing and waning of the moon to other things that change in a similar way and my 7 year old sings songs about the march Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead to fight for civil rights! I am grateful to have found Village Charter many years ago. My child has been apart of this family for about 6 years. I only wish they were available for high school. This school is very accepting of all types of kids. The last review talking about them avoiding to diagnose autism in the child to save money was very off putting. That is not even remotely a true representation of village. I just wanted to share here that village has many many students with disabilities and health issues and they go beyond to support love and nurture everyone there. They teach life skills, compassion, kindness, integrity and so much more. Each week begins and ends with a school wide circle. Parents are involved and everyone knows everyone. It is truly a special place for any child to experience young life and education. When my child came out as wanting to be transgender they entire school supported and began to call him by his new chosen name and gender. I couldn't ask for a better place to have my child. Every time the school year ends they have a graduation ceremony where the whole school gathers and they honor and reflect on memories with and about the graduating students one by one. It's very personal and special. It's a remarkable school and that 1 star review is not accurate. read more

So happy to have found this school! We looked hard to find the right fit and almost ran out of hope until we found Village charter! A lovely sense of community, very welcoming and inclusive. My son attended K through 1st grade. I liked most of the schools philosophy, and the teachers seemed motivated, but in my case, a critical issue for my son was ignored. He is on the spectrum with autism. I had no idea, as I was clueless to the hallmarks of autism, and my son was high functioning. My son moved to Forestville School for second grade. Within two weeks I was invited to a meeting with the principal. She kindly explained he had autism, and ADD. Of course, I was stunned, and asked how sure she was. She told me she sat in the back of his class, and he stood out to her within 3 minutes. The school phycholigist met with him and confirmed his challenges. If it was this obvious to them, then Village Charter CHOSE to ignore the obvious to save money. He was enrolled in two special classes to help him with his learning. In third grade, the school hired a FULL TIME gal who specialized in his issues. She had special teaching techniques for ADD, and shadowed him in class, and on the playground to help with socialization skills. This went on for SIX months!! I was so impressed. I had also learned that the earlier the intervention, the better the chance of overcoming these issues. Of course, I learned all I could regarding his challenges. Once I was up to speed on Aspergers, it was painfully obvious he was on the spectrum. I was able to look back at some of his body language when first in school, and it was a HUGE red flag. NO teacher could have missed it: walking around hands flapping, occasionally babbling, not very social, etc! I was livid he had lost two early years at Village Charter. What they did borders on criminal, and will affect him to some degree the rest of his life. They cost him that crucial early intervention chance. Why? MONEY!! It would have cost the school a significant amount of money to meet their LEGAL OBLIGATION to provide special learning. Forestville School continued to support him through 6th grade, at which time it was decided he was ready to drop special help. He just graduated 8th grade with all A's and B's and was #1 in science for the two 8th grade classes. He has friends, and passions. I thank the pros at Forestville school every day of my life! Village Charter should feel fortunate I didn't sue them out of existence. As far as i'm concerned, those who chose to put money ahead of my son's well being, do not deserve to have the title "Teacher". read more
