This is less of a review and more of a letter of appreciation to the staff of this tremendous restaurant in Wakefield QC, Canada. I sent them an email with the Subject "Possibly the best resto I've ever been to."
Hello Village House,
Please share this with all the staff.
It's not just the food that makes The Village House stand out - although it's excellent - who knew that pig's cheek was a delicacy?
The atmosphere is beautifully intimate. The house itself is wonderful - both inside and out. I look forward to meals on the patio when things warm up. Funky decorations like the wooden clock and coat rack at the entrance, as well as the relics hanging from the walls make it such a lovely place to be in.
Service is everything I hope for in a restaurant. In fact, it goes way beyond my expectations. Every one of your servers has treated me like I'm one of the family, and I cannot describe how welcoming that is.
For the first time, today I sat at a table with my sister Cathy, and regretted it. I much prefer sitting at the bar and watching the magicians. I enjoyed the view of the river, but much prefer watching the cooks. Intricate, accurate, exacting, and magical they are.
Taste is a funny thing. 'One man's treasure...' I had built Village House up in talking to Cathy and worried that I had gone over the top. The worry was unfounded. She raved about the same things I have mentioned above all the way home.
Two minor nits, and you can ignore them. The soup, tomato with coconut, was lovely. Just the right texture, and I found the coconut at the bottom. If that was a mistake, keep doing it. It's a great surprise as I get towards the bottom of the bowl. However, the soup was delivered less than piping hot. Perhaps tepid. As well, that is a big bowl as a soup. Luckily, Cathy and I shared it, so it became a small bowl for each of us.
It is difficult for me to describe the best meal I have had at The Village House as of now. The first was your last wine dinner. Then came New Year's Eve. Today I was treated to Small Plates. (I think there was another one, but I'm old - I dis-remember.) The message there is: keep on surprising me, keep on giving me fantastic food, service and atmosphere.
Yeah, never mind the "possibly" in the subject. The Village House is the best place I've ever been for food, atmosphere and service. The prices are steep, and rightfully so, which means I can't be there every night. But being welcomed by you and your staff is such a thrill.
I'm also posting this to Yelp. For those of you in Zambia, or more than a 1000 miles away from Ottawa Canada, it might be a bit of a stretch to go for a meal, but maybe not. In any event, the website is: http://www.thevillagehouse759.com/
Go. Do it now. Treat yourself. You will not regret it.
