We heard good things about the Village House so we decided to give it a try. We were both very hungry so we figure that we would run this place through its paces. It was a hot day and while they didn't have AC they had enough fans to cool things down. As soon as we got there, we were greeted warmly, we saw their open kitchen and saw the three cooks busting it out like crazy. Their patio was packed and the line was hopping. Although it was warm, the service was friendly and fast. The drinks were all well made, they also have a great wine and beer selection. We both opted for apples and mains and we were not disappointed. Highlights included my wife's started salad and my beef carpaccio- both blew us away. Our mains were equally awesome. I can see why this place is so popular in Wakefield. If you're in town, make it a point to some here. It's worth it. read more

The food and service are amazing. I don't give many restaurants 5 stars but they win. It's small inside (but there's a patio when the weather is nice). It's intimate and romantic. Leave the kids home, but very affordable. The food I would say was epic. Small plates and something for most tastes. We shared It all so we could taste more. We started with a Duck Ham. What is a duck ham? Duck prepared like ham! And It was paired with lemon ricotta and was amazing. The second app we got was a ravioli made with mushrooms and in a cream sauce with pine nuts. Delicious all the way. The main entree was a beef short rib. It fell apart. It was delicious and we were given some bread to sop up the jus. It was incredible. Then the desserts. Nothing to miss here. We ordered one of each to try. My favorite was the apple tartlet. Perfect size amazing flavor. read more

We were excited to try here based on the reviews. However our experience was not positive. We arrived at 6:30 for an early celebration dinner. We had placed our orders by 6:45 but did not recieve our main entrees until 8:15. Our server was apologetic but only took $10 off our $185 bill. It ruined the rest of our evening plans. If you are to eat here, I would inquire if there will be a long delay of food to plan accordingly. read more

What a solid, solid choice! I took my mom here for an early Mother's Day dinner, and man is this place great. The view from the patio is picturesque, as it overlooks the lake, and it's very serene and relaxing. Sunday's is their "small plates" day so everything is appetizer sized. I would recommend 2 per person, if you're going to leave room for dessert. We ordered the potato wrapped shrimp, veggie tempura, lamb poutine, and surf and turf (chili lime scallops and a chicken wing). All of the items were delicious! What we really loved was the innovation and uniqueness of the shrimp dish, and how delicious the lamb poutine was, especially with the crunchy potato strings called "potato Rushdies" added to it. For dessert we ordered their chocolate ganache, and apple tart with caramel ice cream. If you love chocolate, the ganache is the way to go, and if you're an apple pie person the tart is superb and delicious! Staff were also super friendly and helpful. They accommodated our requests for no pork in the meals, and although they initially forgot to remove the bacon from the apple tart dessert, they could have easily just removed the bacon in the kitchen, and brought it back out but they didn't! They remade the dessert from scratch, which showed their dedication to quality and service, and trust me it was definitely worth the wait. If you're looking for a solid place to eat in Wakefield with a great atmosphere and lovely service, this is the place to go! read more

I promise you, this little place with a homey feel serves divine food that could stand up anywhere in LA or NY. Family owned, there is a lot of pride served up in these dishes. They love what they do, it is obvious! I recommend the gnocchi and potato shrimp appies. Then for mains, I HAVE to recommend the short ribs. But then there is also the dual fish dish that my husband now swears by. Our friends got the poutine and loved that as well. There are no bad choices here. And you feel like a very welcomed guest in a warmly decorated little house. Service, perfect. Fine dining embodying casual dress. You can even come in, sit at the bar, have a glass of wine and watch the chef in action at the stove. And then turn around in your seat and see the beautiful water views. It was a fluke we ended up here on this particular day but it will not be a fluke that we come back the next time we are in/near Ottawa. 6 stars if I could give it! read more

Gourmet food in a country setting. This was the best restaurant we visited in a recent trip to the Gatineau region. We were there on "Small Plate Sunday" and enjoyed the seared tuna among other dishes. Flavours were in perfect balance and service was warm and prompt. Creme Brule was the real thing. read more

Attention meat lovers - the owners previously worked at Murray Street! The Village House is located in a cute old house in Wakefield (Quebec) which is a small town about half an hour outside Ottawa. The vibe is cozy and relaxed. Village House will make you feel at home instantly. The menu is focused on local ingredients and is limited to under six items for each course. The highlight of dinner was the beef shortrib entre accompanied by a glass of pinot noir. While the braised lamb leg poutine starter wasn't a disappointment, it didn't live up to my high hopes for gluttony. The prices are very reasonable given the quality of the food which makes it worth the drive. Tip: If possible, sit at the bar or at the table opposite the bar so you can watch the chef hard at work. read more

We stayed at the Wakefield in and elected to go to the Village House for our anniversary dinner. Being a Monday at the start of September after the schools started, it was quiet (my wife thanked me for reserving the whole restaurant for her!). We had the potato-wrapped shrimp and the steak tartar for appetizers. The steak tartar was delicious but it was eclipsed by that shrimp - wow! For the main course, my wife had the lamb and I had the pork loin. I had loved the vegetables with my pork (brussel sprouts, delicious mushrooms, wheatberries (a grain), and I think some zuccini) and the pork was tender and delicious. My wife loved her lamb. For desert, we had a creme brulee which had an exquisitely light consistency and a great flavour and the butter tart with the ice cream, nuts and pieces of bacon. The butter tart crust may have had a slight bitterness, but it worked with the filling and the savory/salty bacon and the rich ice chocolate (I believe) ice cream. An excellent meal. We will come back when we next head up to Wakefield. read more

First time at this restaurant but not the last. We tried 4 appetizer dishes and all were excellent but if I had to pick a favorite I would highly recommend the confit pig cheek with aged cheddar. Finished the evening with the creme brûlée. This dessert is one I am often disappointed with as many restaurants do not get the consistency right but this one was perfect. We're a bit boring when we find something we like, so we don't explore the menu much, but what we have had has been fabulous. I am a very picky eater to say the least. For me, a good dinner out is about more than just the food - it's about the service, the wait staff, not to mention the ambience - and that includes lighting and music. If it's just not right - I'm not going to be happy. Well, the Village House is one of those restaurants that met and exceeded my expectations. Owned by Mark and Sarah - these two, with their small team, have in my opinion created one of the best rustic / gourmet restaurants of its type in the Ottawa region. The food is amazing - literally. The music is soft, in the background and sets a nice cozy setting for either a romantic dinner, a meal with a few friends or a pleasant family dinner. The decor is great - very tastefully done - and the service is excellent. They are very friendly and very attentive to their patrons. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a superb meal in Wakefield - this is a gem and must not be missed. read more

This place is legit good. We went on a Sunday when they were serving small plates so we were able to sample a wide range of their dishes, and were very impressed. We went to Le Hibou the night before (which is charming and has a great menu), but enjoyed the food at The Village House a lot more for the same amount of money. read more

This place is THE perfect spot. First time to Wakefield and will be back. Went on a Sunday night so it was relatively quiet but I think that really made a nice ambiance for date night. We are both game for trying new foods and this place is so far the best we've eaten. Allium and Next come a very close second. It was small plate Sunday so we had three savory plus a sweet. I don't like calamari but OMGGGG was it ever good! Not fishy or chewy.. Slightly spicy. Amazing. Lamb Poutine is made with a potato pancake ( for lack of a better word) cut up into fries with melt in your mouth lamb and St. Albert cheese- YASSS. Beet salad was warm and you'd think that wouldn't work but it melted the blue cheese ever so slightly and made it quite comforting. The greens in the salad we the perfect bite size.. I judge salads whose greens are as big as my face. Potato and garlic soup was not heavy like your think it would be.. So so good. Chocolate ganache was the perfect size and very chocolaty.. My favorite dessert however was the apple tart.. Omg caramel ice cream that rivals Pascale's here in Ottawa and little bits of BACON decorated the plate. Out hostess is part owner I think and she was so genuine - no pressure, so friendly, seemed really happy to be there. Loved it! read more
