Saw some reviews saying something about a Harry Potter vibe, but I didn't get that at all. It has some cool elements, but definitely did not live up to those expectations. They are along the riverside with outside cheap seating, right beside the Ouse river and geese strolled around as we sat and chatted in warm sunshine. If they did actual food I didn't notice. As we walked inside to the bar to order our first drinks we encountered staff challenging a chap of much advanced years, dressed like a drab Quentin Crisp, who attempted to use his mobile phone in the pub. I later spotted him outside, drink in one hand and mobile phone against his ear, he was chatting, leaning against the wall trying unsuccessfully to look nonchalant. They describe themselves as a 'digital detox pub'. The chief rule is no mobile phones as they want customers to talk to each other. How novel, quirky and eccentric in the 21st century. No swearing and no music either. Them rules are strictly enforced and you will be evicted if them rules ain't followed promptly. If I'm ever in York again I'll be sure to return for the stout and the insults.

The pub used to stable racehorses, and is directly opposite the stables of York Racecourse. The interior is styled as a country pub, although Dringhouses is actually a suburb of York, these days, and it felt more suburban than villagey in atmosphere. There's lots of exposed wood and brick fireplaces, and patterned carpet. All very traditional. It's deceptively large - as you wander, more areas seem to open out in front of you, so we had no trouble finding a seat. They serve food, and a lot of other customers were eating here. We didn't sample it, but it looked good, and it arrived quickly. They serve three real ales (Timothy Taylor, Black Sheep and their own brew, which was a very pleasant hoppy bitter - a bit like IPA), which were well kept, and the staff topped my pint up without asking - always a good thing. One of my friends wanted a Campari and lemonade, though, and they didn't sell that, nor her second choice of a Bacardi Breezer. The emphasis seemed to be on beer and wine instead, and she made do with a G&T. Staff seemed friendly and, despite being very busy, they seemed to cope efficiently with the crowd. Three things stood out. 1 great service 2 great food 3 lovely relaxing atmosphere. Although the car park is quite small this should not put you off. There is a small seating area out in the front. Inside the decor is very nice, with an open fire place which is used in winter. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I recommend this pub to all wanting a quiet drink, although there is a not a wide choice of beers on offer, that shouldn't matter. Highly recommended.
