Not really sure why this place is called 'The Volunteer'. It sounds more like a soup kitchen than a pub, for a start. Perhaps the volunteer it refers to is a member of the bar staff or a punter, who knows. If a customer has to volunteer to go into a pub though then it doesn't exactly have positive connotations, does it?
Regardless of issues about the identity of the volunteer in question in their name, The Volunteer is a decent enough pub that offers drinkers a good selection of draught beers and cask ales, all of which are pretty decently-priced.
The Volunteer also serves good home cooking, including a Sunday roast which features fresh veg and is great value for money. The pub also features live entertainment every week, including local bands performing most weeks in an attempt to get the party atmosphere going.
So if you're looking for a quiet midday pint or a lively atmosphere at night, it might be worth volunteering to go in here once in a while. read more
