En route to town, I dropped in my solid favourite heels to be fixed up, and was greeted by the ever friendly and welcoming guys that man the shop. I'm sure one of them must be Steve, and one day I might venture to ask which one, but on this occasion I wasn't so brave as to make introductions. It costs just over a fiver to get re-heeling done, and I've never been in without being able to collect the shoes about 30 minutes later. Basically, it gives you enough time to pop off for a coffee, take in the world, and pop back again before going about your day. Of course, if you need keys cut, and the various other cobbler odd jobs, they're ready to provide good service for that too. They're always smiling, they're cheap and cheerful, they're fantastic and I've them to thank for not having to buy new shoes. It's always a pleasure. The keycutting services are as fast as they are cheap (very) and on the two occasions I've needed a key cut here, I've had no problems with the finished product working in my doors. Can't say I've ever needed to have a shoe cobbled though. I'm a firm believer in the if-a-shoe's-broke-bin-it school of thought, so I can't comment on Steve's shoe skills, but I'd wager they're as professional as his key-cutting skills are.

I nipped in to Chapel A and went on in, explaining that three needed re-heeling and my boots desperately needed some kind of rubber bottom to the heel as the plastic was proving lethal in the wet weather. (Yes, summer seems to be officially over in Leeds with nary an hour of decent sunlight in the last week or so... ) The chap asked if I wanted them doing today, which I did, so he said he needn't bother with a ticket. Since I was getting four pairs done at once he decided to do all four for for only £20, where usually the individual pairs are a £6.50, which I thought was marvellous! I handed him my bundle of shoes and spent a lovely hour or so mooching in Chapel A and enjoying a coffee at Zed before heading back to see how he'd done. He showed me my newly re-heeled shoes and all three pairs seemed as good as new, it still amazes me what a new lease of life simply re-heeling can do for my favourite pairs of shoes, and he'd even polished up my boots with their new safety-friendly rubber heel. It was a pleasure to nip in here the other day with my Mum. I'd not planned to pop in, but she saw…read morethe shoe sign and made a bee-line for the door. Before I knew it we were discussing the ins and outs of suede and leather care with the lovely chap inside. He explained that for leathers it was a simple case of protecting with polish, but suede on the other hand was another issue. He in fact said he could end up selling us fifty pounds worth of care products, all of which we'd use fully, just to protect our shoes. So, an expensive thing to look after it seems! Nonetheless we simply made a purchase of some hardy looking suede protector spray and ended up having a lovely bit of banter in the meantime. As I looked around at the array of different items this place has on sale I was reminded just what a jack of all trades this cute little shop is. Need some make up? Plenty of cheap basket items check. Need a keyring? Check. Shoe care items? Check. And so on. A really handy shop with a lovely bloke to help you out!

Berry's sells diamond encrusted gold and silver jewellery at suitably unaffordable prices! They…read morealso sell watches, and browsing their watch collection, many nearing £3000 I can't help but wonder what on earth makes them so very expensive...to the untrained eye they really do just look like standard watches, many without the bling you'd expect at such a price tag...but maybe a brand name such as Bell & Ross, unfamiliar to the likes of me, is inculcated with some mysterious power to attract those with more money than sense. The mind truly boggles. The jewellery is a mixture of the theatrically blinging (despite being partial to a bit of costume jewellery myself I find most of this pretty unappealing), with rings clocking in at heady heights of around £6000 and more mundane understated drop earrings, still with a wopping price tag nearing £5000. I think I must just be destined to wander happily through life blissfully unaware of the intrinsic value of a few diamonds, as for some reason none of the jewellery on offer excites any reaction from me other than utter shock that anyone actually spend such money on such things. For engagement or wedding rings I can see why someone might justify spending a packet, but the range here merely resembles those found on the pages of the Argos catalogue...nothing really special.

I was cruising for Christmas presents recently and wandered past Berrys, so paused a while to…read morebrowse in their window. The first thing to hit you are the many many watches. Watches galore! An entire (est.) 3m window dedicated to mens watches with all the major brands - Cartier, Jaeger le Coultre, Omega and Rolex. Of the Rolexs that I noted, there were pre-owned Rolexs for a generous £1000 less than the brand new ones. Still, from glancing at all the options, the prices averaged between £1000-£3000 give or take. So I moved on to glance at more affordable gifts. Their jewellery items were much the same, very high end prices, but some lovely pieces. All the precious gem related jewellery - peridot, diamonds, emeralds, were lovely and very contemporary in style; the gems were cut in stark square formations and very simplistic. It was wonderful to have a look at their selections but unfortunately, for reasons of style and pauperdom, there was nothing for me here. Great if you happen to have a spare couple of grand.
