Being right across the street from the station and being a Wetherspoons (a.k.a. one of the cheapest places in town) means the Union Rooms is usually full and has an eclectic crowd. It has a very nice ambiance for a chain pub as it was a former gentleman's club (not that kind!). There are two bars (one on each floor), a sit down dining area and a large-ish family space. That said, they run out of the most random things (juice? the advertised beers?) at the most random times and is so popular it seems difficult for the staff to keep clean. It's also kind of rowdy on game day, but where in Newcastle isn't?

The 2 for 1 meal deals are a very good offer at the moment and means that people can afford a night out. Regular music and other specials help to reinforce the value for money they offer. The haddock batter was crisp and the fish was tasty and not dry at all. Loved the mushy peas, though I have no idea if that is what they are supposed to taste like or not. Overall a very nice place, though a bit on the higher side for a student budget. I think my total meal with a lemonade and tip was 11 quid.

The atmosphere is always really relaxed and friendly, the music is good and the beer is cheap so yeah it may lack some Manchester style but it isn't trying hard to be anything other than cheap and cheerful!

Here you pay about the same as any other pub grub, but you get much more for your money. They have imaginative dishes (e.g. Draculars Downfall - a garlic laced dish!). You can sit in the conservatory or in the pub depending on your preference.
