We arrived in Scarborough at half eleven,but we couldn't check in until half one. So after finding a car park,which I have to say at £4.50 for twenty four hours ,on a weekend, at the seaside was damn cheap! we decided to go for a bit of a wander round and see what had changed in the five years since our last foray into N Yorkshire. After walking around for only about ten minutes Ange got a phone call summoning us to the pub. Four hours later we were heading for the hotel. From the outside the place didn't look much,ok,but nothing spectacular. Once inside though it was different. Some people would probably not find the layout of the building that nice,I though found it pretty cool. Lots of corners and stairs all a-jumble (It's an old victorian building,as they all are in this part of the town). After checking in with the very friendly, smiley Lady we headed for the lift. Now the lift said max 4 people,I would've paid to see 4 people,especially adults try to squeeze in. It was very small and had one of the best signs I had ever seen in it,see photo. The room was perfectly fine,maybe a bit small for some,but seeing as how we were only there for one night and primarily wanted it for the bed it was perfect. You could tell that back in the day they had tried to cram as many rooms into the building as possible,sink in the bedroom not the toilet etc. But overall the place had a really nice vibe to it. The only downside for me was the breakfast,not the quality of it,that was fine. Nice sausage,egg,bacon,beans,tomato and toast,washed down with tea,coffee or juice. No for me the problem was the time,breakfast between 8 and 9:30 was just a bit early for me,I'd add at least another half an hour to an hour onto that. A minor quibble though. If we head back to N Yorks in the future then I won't have a problem if i'm told i'll be staying here again....

You can see the place needs money spending on it. Not a place to go if you want luxury or are a clean freak. One of our clean towels had a very questionable stain on it and was refused a second sheet when we asked for one. Considering the budget out of £20 they must have for the breakfast they did a good job. Basic and plentiful. Typical guesthouse landlady (Strict) and landlord (Comedian). In short, well worth £20 but you can see why they can't really command more. I'd probably stay there again if I only had £20 to spend on a bank holiday weekend. If I go again I'll probably try and find some where for a few pounds more.

The owner was very nice and always keen to help. We were also highly pleased with the breakfast from which you could chose between three or four different kinds (e.g. English, Scottisch, European etc.).

It is very petite and cosy, with the clean smell of fresh paint still lingering in the hall! We had an amazing weekend and would recommend this to anyone who wants to get away for a night or two! It's very easy to find as you enter Filey and not far from the railway and bus stations and the local filling station is just a 100 yards down the road, you are not far from the centre of town but not far enough to hear the hustle and bustle. there are some good restaurants within a few hundred yards if you want a good evening meal. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Hallam Guest house and look forward to another visit soon.

The proprietors supply a professional and warm welcome and are always at hand for any of your needs even if it is just a friendly chat. Athol House has five generously spaced rooms (one larger family room) and decorated to an elegantly high standard with plenty of storage and hangers. The standard facilities of TV and tea & coffee facility's avail themselves as well as a heated towel rail, travel cot, high chair and ironing equipment at request. I also found a BT OpenZone WiFi hub and 3G connectivity for the more online traveller. Breakfast is an area for a B&B to win or lose repeat clientele but there is very little chance of you coming away anything less than impressed and contented. Various cereals and fresh fruits avail themselves whilst you await your cooked meal. The plates served are always picture perfect and you can tell that the cook has an eye for perfection. Not to miss, the scrambled eggs are a cut above. Athol House can hold its head up high, I've had worse nights staying in four star business hotel chains and certainly worse breakfasts.

I'd requested a window view room, and our second story view looked down on the River Ouse. The Guest House's location in town is great, being a five minute walk from the York Train Station via the new pedestrian bridge and within easy walking of everything else in town. The nearby Abbey's gorgeous gardens provided an especially pleasant shortcut into town, rain or shine. Then there were the accommodations. After staying in a cramped London hotel, we felt as if we could breathe! The bed was spacious, and the room and toilet facilities were great. I think the only criticism I can offer at all is that the shower drain was slow. The human element was wonderful, too. The owners of the Guest House were actually away, leaving us in the care of a professional B&B sitter. She was a kind, attentive hostess, happy to help us with anything we needed. We were greeted upon arrival with Yorkshire tea and warmed brownies! Our breakfasts were wonderful, too. She worked with our schedule so that we could eat there before doing a day tour and before our train departed. The default breakfast is a Full English, which we didn't do. My husband was happy with just the meat portion of the breakfast (those Yorkshire sausages...! don't expect teeny tiny American-style breakfast sausages) while I tried both of the lighter options, salmon with scrambled eggs and then Eggs Benedict. All accompanied by Yorkshire tea, of course, along with fresh toast. The breakfast bar included yogurt, a really good muesli, fresh fruit, and three excellent local jams and marmalades. We felt well-fortified for the day's adventures. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
