The Wellington Hotel has the misfortune of being in an absolutely vile, run-down part of Birmingham, just off the Queensway, near New Street Station.
The neighbourhood is full of broken windows, lots of litter and tiny little shops that have mostly all shut down.
The Wellington is the only pub in each direction for about half a mile, so it's the best to go for a drink before you go out to eat anywhere around the area.
It's a dodgy looking pub/hotel from the outside, much like the rest of the neighbourhood, but it's at least in good repair, with no terribly peeling paint or broken windows.
Inside the pub part, there is a bit of a funky smell, like chicken soup -- not entirely unpleasant, just noticeable, and frankly, it adds to the completely bizarre charm of the place.
The decor is lifted straight from a Carry On film set in the Victorian era -- completely 60s kitsch, with faux green velvet stool covers, dark wood everywhere, and patterned wall coverings.
The tables are all old, high style, with metal bases in an Art Nouveau restoration style -- absolutely fabulously vintage! The stools are all attached, with the aforementioned green velvet cushioning guest's bums.
The owner/manager is a friendly chap, the service is great, and there is a wide variety of local ales and lagers, and a fine selection of liquors. The drinks were very reasonably priced, and immensely quaffable.
I can't comment on the food, or the hotel rooms, as I was only in for about an hour for a few drinks, but from what we could see, the hotel bit looked clean and tidy, and decorated in the same 60s manner -- books lining the walls, and everything! read more
