We didn't have high hopes coming to this establishment for dinner. But upon receiving our meal, we were pleasantly surprised. Our dinner was very flavorful and presentation was on point. The ambience was bar like. Service was very pleasant. Good value for the money in a small town. Very close to Barkerville. The place was busy all the way through. The customers were mostly out of towners and some locals, which is a good sign. We enjoyed our meal very much and would highly recommend this place for anyone who would like to have a meal outside of the historic town of Barkerville, which is only 10 minutes away. read more

The ambiance was very strange, almost as if it were designed more for the owner's comfort than for the paying customers. It was stuffy, looked a bit dirty, and had an air of exclusivity, but not in a refined way--in a manner that was simply rude and unwelcoming. The food was an utter disappointment. While I expected something special from a place charging such exorbitant prices, what I received was bland, uninspired, and overpriced. The meals were no better than what you might scrape together at home on a particularly uninspired evening. Yet, for some reason, they seem to think they can charge as though they were offering a gourmet experience. As if that weren't enough, the service was painfully slow. I've never seen such a lack of urgency in my life. The man with the beard, who I assume is some sort of manager or head of staff, was particularly dreadful. He was rude, inattentive, and seemed more interested in his own affairs than in ensuring guests were well taken care of. His presence was an irritation every time he appeared, and unfortunately, he was impossible to avoid. read more

The people were very nice. The lobby and check in counter were very nice. Our hopes were high, and then we went up to our room. We had reserved the "suite", room 7. It was so unlike the pictures online that at first I thought it was a prank. The room was "decorated" with garage sale type furniture that was screwed to the wall. There was one small picture to add to the ambiance, also screwed to the wall. Two beds, two tiny beaten up side tables, and one tiny picture screwed to the wall. We went downstairs to order dinner, and when we returned we realized that the door not only wouldn't lock, it was sagging so low it wouldn't even latch. We decided to put a chair against the door, but there was none, so we piled our luggage in front of the door just to keep it closed. No place to sit for a moment even though there was plenty of room for a chair or two. So we ate dinner sitting on the edge of the bed trying to not spill anything. Unfortunately the average traveller won't have much occasion to find themselves in Wells BC but if they do they should definitely dine at the Wells Hotel. While visiting Barkerville we had dinner there two nights in a row. The first night I had the Bacon Cheese Mac. It was made with penne noodles, a rich white sauce and lots of cheese in addition to freshly cooked bacon. It was the perfect meal after a long trip. My partner had the steak frites and raved about it so much that I tried it the second night while they had the green thai curry.
