The cheese was barely melted and it was warm at most, no, room temp. All in all, it was a squished sandwich. The drinks were pretty good but I've had better. The creamsicle? Great no notes. The italian cream soda? Watery, not creamy, and in lack of flavour. Sure you could ask for more syrup but still, meh. And on top of all of that, they didn't even give me napkins.

We were invited to join the table of about 8 local people. Right before 9:00 two of the ladies (I assume the owners) got up and went to the kitchen to cook. The special of the day was Eggs Benny. The food was outstanding. We left with carrot cake bread pudding to enjoy later today. We had so much fun visiting and eating with the locals. They welcomed us like we had known each other for years. In town for a surprise Birthday party we had to lay low to not tip the party girl off. We have…read morestayed at the Tower before and picked it again as it's good value for the dollar. We had eaten lunch here on another visit and were satisfied with the meal. Not earth shattering but pretty tasty. As we had driven most of the day we didn't want to do more driving to get dinner. We saw that they were advertising a new pizza menu so we decided to give it a try. We make pizza at home all the time so our expectations were pretty high. We were not disappointed at all as the pizza was very tasty, large and covered in toppings which were great. We ate as much as we could put down and saved the rest in our rooms fridge. Top drawer pizza in our mind. In the other hand, the following morning we went to the diner for breakfast, and probably have only had a worse meal once or twice. Our server wrote down our order on a piece of paper that had scribbles all over it, so we wondered how she was going to get it right. We were spot on with our assessment! She talked quite a bit to no one, took my tea to the wrong table and left it there even though the patron made it clear he didn't order it. I finally got my tea after asking a second time. Our food came out totally wrong with scrambled and not over medium and sunny up. When she said to the lovely K, scrambled, and was told no, slid the plate to my side. I told her no sunny side up, and she said no scrambled, I wrote it down. The food was taken away and she came back with her notes and the entry ticket she had and tried to show us that we were wrong. When she was proven that she was wrong she blamed the kitchen for not reading what she entered. The lovely K's pancakes were forgotten, and then promised in two minutes. She got them after I had eaten my entire breakfast, other than the potatoes that were barely warm, and dotted with potatoes that had black spots all over them. Needless to say they were not eaten. The toast was so cold that the butter wasn't even remotely melted into the bread, and it was so dry that jam had to be put on each piece so you could choke it down. Once again when the bill was presented we were shown paperwork to show that the kitchen was to blame, which was not the case. My tea was taken off the bill for our troubles with the service and the food. I realize that people have a bad day from time to time, but the vast difference between the pizza the night before, and the fiasco that was breakfast cannot be overlooked. We've never had a server that was so vehement in her opinion of doing a great job, and that we, or the kitchen, were at fault for her shortcomings. We'll stay at the hotel again for sure, but will not subject ourselves to the breakfast situation that was amongst the worst experiences of our travels.

The service and food has always been good. Except this time. The waitress showed us to our table and brought us coffee and water while we looked at the menu. We quickly made up our mind and waited for the waitress to take our order. We waited a long time before the waitress finally took our order. People who came in after us were ordering their food but not us.Food arrived at other tables while we didn't even get a coffee refill. We noticed the waitress put on her jacket and left, leaving another waitress to look after people. Change of shift probably? After 45 minutes of waiting we got up and went to pay for the coffee and then leave. The man said Oh your order is ready now....Really? This is totally unacceptable. We felt totally ignored. I would like to add that we drove past several other restaurants to purposely stop at this Dennys location. We were on a long 10 hour journey and to have to put up with this level of service is just plain rude. Maybe they need more staff? Unless this changes,we will not go back to Dennys.

As nearby Wells is completely booked by now, we are out of a vacation. Yes wildfires in BC are with us to stay. This park needs to develop a clear fire policy and put a large disclaimer on its guesthouse rental site. Had we known last winter we would have booked in Wells instead.

We stayed one night in the room with the on suite bathroom and the other two in the double room upstairs. Both rooms were comfortable and decorated in the style of the times. We loved meeting all the travellers who were staying in the house and chatting during the evenings and having breakfast with them as well. What a treat to meet such fine people :) I can't recommend enough staying within Barkerville so that you can really appreciate this quaint little town. We were able to explore from morning until night and it truly felt like we had gone back into the gold rush days. We will be back! Thanks Shirley and Murray! :D
