Black paintwork and nicotine walls. Black Boy dates back to the 1330s, though the first reference to licenced premises on the site was in 1729. Most now is 17th and 18th century. Ye Olde Black Boy is the definitive genuine traditional Olde English pub and of course it has a ghost. it is a little slave boy (hence the name) who was a servant there before the abolishion. The only issue I have had is that their card machine is a bit dodgy so can take a few attempts to get the payment through. It's a largish space, pretty basic in terms of decor, but definitely a place you could while away a few very pleasant hours with friends; music was enjoyable and not so loud that it restricted conversation. Lots of live music events in the offing, and news of other businesses moving into the area which can only be positive for development of a previously neglected zone in Hull, and they are doing lots of community based projects which will benefit local people. It is small, tacky, scruffy, the walls covered in Alchemy posters and I love it. The experience: A bunch of Goths, from Grimsby) go by minibus to Spiders Nightclub. Way too early we go to a place a couple say they found close by. It is pretty packed with rockers, bikers, goths etc. I go asked for age ID which was pretty amusing! We all had labels round our necks. The birthday boy who's jaunt this was had chosen characters he thought we resembled and we each had a photo of our character. Mine was Elvira. We got asked what they were about and my Elvira one was nodded over as they looked me up and down. EEK! Anyway all these locals were friendly and chatty. A band began to play. We had a couple of rounds (and the drinks are cheap)..went to the bar and was told the bar has to shut for 10 mins. We were a tad puzzled as they were pouring tins of lighter fuel all over it..so we watched the band whilst waiting..suddenly the vocalist shot over to us. Then the bar staff SET LIGHT to the bar!!! he leapt up on it and sang and danced in the flames! End of song he jumped down, kissed all the girls and the bar staff got out the pledge and dusters, cleaned the bar and said, OK what do you want guys? LOVED IT!
